GTA 6 will probably be a brilliant game that will basically kill the game industry. Both things can be true.
Granted, a year ago I would've suggested at most it would've just encouraged more of the bs already slowing killing the industry, but considering how it will do a lot to make Sony think their killing of physical media is good or logical...bad times. Like the console war feels like its over now and Sony doesn't even know it yet.
And I don't mean like it will actually kill it, but I mean it will kill even more of the relevance of a notable portion of western AAA games, and be basically the equivalent of wrestling after WCW and ECW closed or the movie industry this decade before this year. They're not gonna die or disappear from relevance, but the idea of a mass audience regularly buying 70 dollar games with no physical object involved is nonsense. Most of them will have to survive by finding niche audiences with a lot of money.
Similarly, I hate the logic people will be like "well casuals will just buy the games as always" no they won't! The casual gamers are the ones who buy one or two games a year, the hardcore audience is the one that buys the vast majority of software on any console.
@kkslider5552000 I can definitely see GTA 6 having a huge effect on the industry. The game likely has 100s of hours of content and many ps5 and xbox series consoles owners will be focused on it for quite a while but there are a lot of PC gamers in the world plus of course Nintendo, xbox one and ps4/ps4 pro gamers too. Android and IOS are also huge gaming formats nowadays too. I own a ps5 and xbox series x and I'm not buying it for either until there is a physical version or its dirt cheap neither of which is likely to happen. Sony's recent comments that people shouldn't expect to own digital games long term has really put me off investing in playstation digital games. I'm feeling very very cautious about playstation digital games now. I'd rather own it on pc. I've a feeling GTA 6 will not be as big as GTA 5 but then what do I know as I was never a huge fan of it anyway but both Playstation and Xbox feel like they have damaged themselves somewhat. Xbox isn't really a world format anyway its mainly US and reasonable European and NZ/Australian numbers.

I'm a step further than that as the price increases and everything Sony has said and done about digital this past Summer completely destroyed my interest in Playstation 5 being my secondary system in the near future and, if not for the currently existing physical games on it and the possibility of course correction and eventual affordability as the console becomes older, might've made PC the one and only option for me other than Nintendo going forward.
I think one of the worst things to come out of GTA6 so far is it granted Sony immunity to basically do whatever they wanted to do to PS with no consequences. Closing Bluepoint, price hikes, dynamic pricing on PS Store, killing off discs, cancelling Physint, etc. all in the space of 7 months. It's really disappointing how bad the state of PS has been over the past few years but got a lot worse this year.
GTA6 as a game which made the holiday season a lot quieter is somewhat convenient. OoT remake is 1:1 so I have no interest in replaying at this point in time (will pick up physical after UK retailers have stopped selling it at scalper prices), Switch Sports Resort is the kind of game you play alongside other games which sets up nicely for catching up on the KH franchise and backlog following Fortune's Weave.
Barring the alternate reality where they're dramatically (not just mildly) worse, I'd prefer the world where Nintendo (not just Nintendo) stopped making remakes for series they otherwise didn't make on Switch and just made new games in the style of those games. If I had a new Advance Wars, a new Mario RPG/Paper Mario that isn't their 2nd attempt to make "Sticker Star but Good This Time", a new classic style 2D Zelda, a new classic style 3D Zelda, a new Star Fox with consistently good gameplay, 3 new Super Monkey Ball games, that would be just fine.
This is practically a hot take even for me, since a lot of my favorite Switch games are remakes. But I love the original versions of all those games and could've also just played them. I'm not against the remakes existing but if forced to choose, they could just make a new game in this style I like without needing the years with nothing, the years spent making a remake and the years maybe making a new one finally.
It is also frustrating that the best example of this is Sonic Generations and 3D World did give us a new game but you have to buy a full priced game you likely already own to get the not full priced type of game (maybe this is less true for Shadow Generations, i don't know). If they both literally did the thing where you buy them separately but the bundle of them together is cheaper, than it would be fine and I would easily buy a 30 dollar version of both of the actual new games.
