Looking around local second hand stores and such, I've seen some gaming machines and I really want to buy this second hand Original Xbox, since I never owned one in the PS2 era. I just want to know what games I should look out for if I go to purchase it, I'll just say this first: I don't particularly like Halo, so please don't suggest that game.
The reason I want to get one is because the console and games are rather cheap, but really it's because I never spent anytime with one to have a good opinion about the games and the system. I've always been a Nintendo guy, but i've owned other consoles/handhelds in the past like the PS2 and PSP.
Looking back to the PS2 era, I don't particularly remember there being much in the way of actual Xbox games, I know Halo and Halo 2 were absolutely popluar, but I don't remember any titles other than a few more notable titles like Grabbed by the Ghoulies, Munch's Oddysee, Oddworld: Stranger's Wrath, Blinx: the Time Cat and Shenmue II, I only really know those titles by name since i've seen them on shelves and heard from fans, but I've never had a chance to play any of them.
For those who did play Xbox back when it was still kicking, could you recommend any games to a gamer who never owned the console back in the day? To give you some help, I'm more into Action, Action Adventure, Platformer and RPG games, so if you know any good games in those genres then that would be pretty sweet.

One thing becareful with used Xboxs the are extreme easy to mod so be careful cause you could end up getting one if you dont buy it from a reliable source.

The Dead or Alive fighting series was pretty prolific on Xbox. I believe DOA2 was on both PS2 & Xbox, but DOA3 was Xbox exclusive (could be the other way around, though).
Currently Playing:
Switch - Blade Strangers
PS4 - Kingdom Hearts III, Tetris Effect (VR)
I played some of that game on PC, but because the disc was scratched I never spent much time actually playing it. I hear the games are pretty fun, though I'm not a terribly huge star wars fan, I'll keep it in mind if I see it.

Take a look at the 360 Backwards Compatibility list, as it may make more sense to get a 360 (unless of course you're just looking to grab an original Xbox on the cheap): http://support.xbox.com/en-US/games/play-original-games
There are some good original Xbox games that are not compatible, but most of the good/well-known titles are supported — and some you can even download direct via XBL.
KOTOR 1&2, best RPGs I've ever played. Might get a little expensive though. I remember paying around $50 for KOTOR 2, it was worth it though. Definitely get Star Wars: Republic Commando, great FPS with excellent teammate AI. Those three are the true gems of the system. Sid Meieir's Pirates is also a good game.

I recommend Jet Set Radio Future! It's bundled with Sega GT usually, although it might get seriously expensive nowadays.
The original Fable was pretty good on Xbox, although you can get it for super cheap on PC through Steam now.
And, slightly off topic, but how much are used Xboxes usually going by? I've got one lying under my bed, and I'm not sure if now's a good time to get rid of it.
always thought I'd change to Gyarados after I turned 20 but hey, this is more fitting I guess. (also somebody registered under the original Magikarp name and I can't get back to it anymore orz)
I'd strongly consider a 360 instead. The original box is huge, and most of the good games work on the 360 anyway.
Knights of the Old Republic
Knights of the Old Republic II
Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind
Fable
Ninja Gaiden
Jet Set Radio Future
Panzaer Dragoon Orta
Stranger's Wrath
Jade Empire
I've got one, but the controllers are busted and I can't find the time to buy a new one. Sucks, though... I really wanted to play some Burnout Revenge.
I've only ever played 6 games:
Cars - One of the very few movie games that don't suck.
Star Wars Battlefront 1&2 - This is combat perfection. CoD has NOTHING on this.
Star Wars Republic Commando
Burnout Revenge and Burnout 3 Takedown - The Burnout series is awesome. Seriously. A game focused on car combat and nitro boosts.
