I often see people with questions on how to find their Friends Code and/or add a Friend over the internet. I couldn't believe how bad the information was that I found on nintendo.com so I decided to post my own guide here that I could point others to
1. Click the Happy Face Icon
Clicking this orange square happy face icon will take you to your list of friends.
2. Click Register Friend Button
Click the orange Register Friend button in the upper right to get started. (you can delete friends from your list using the Settings button on the left)
3. Choose Internet
Click Internet since that is what you are using to read this guide right now (and where AcornHead resides)
If you choose Local then both 3DS systems need to be in the same room and choose the Local option to add each other (a little easier but we probably aren't in the same room if you are reading this guide)
4. Type in Friend Code
Everyone should have a 12 digit code that uniquely identifies them. (mine is 4313-1667-2030)
Get this code from the friend on the forums you want to add and then type it in.
5. Type in Friend Name
Type anything here to help you remember who you are trying to add (using their forum name makes it easier to track them down later on)
6. Confirm and Click OK
Once you are happy with your decision then click OK.
7. Friend is only Provisionally Registered
You now need to return to the forums and tell your new provisionally registered friend to add you back.
8. Share Your Friend Code
In order for someone to add you back you need to give them your Friend Code. You can find it by selecting the first card on your friends list on the bottom screen and then looking up at the top screen details with your unique 12 digit code (written as 3 groups of 4 numbers)
