Earlier I figured I may as well try my luck at connecting to the eShop. I managed to redeem my Wind Waker code that came bundled with my Wii U, I guess I got lucky since it seemed to go without a hitch. My sympathies to those still waiting to download their games. Nintendo has definitely screwed up but at least we're seeing clear evidence of them working on it, it'd be a lot worse if they just left us with the initial error codes we were getting.
