The launch of the N64 in 1996 is really what sealed Nintendo's fate with 3rd party publishing for the next decade. Based off the percentages, it appears most of your readers are too young to recall this, because it's easily the lowest point in Nintendo's history. Sony's move to disc format and Nintendo's reluctance to embrace it, forced literally all of Japan's biggest publishers over to Sony and Nintendo didn't recover until the original Wii. To be fair, the original PlayStation was in fact a SNES disc upgrade, but even after that collaboration fell through, Nintendo still chose the more expensive ROM based cartridge format anyway and publishers said "no way" and ditched the Big N. The Switch is the closest Nintendo has come to regaining true 3rd party support since the days of the SNES back when it dominated.
