Re: Shigeru Miyamoto Becomes First Game Dev To Receive Japan's Prestigious Culture Award

HarryMurdoch

Miyamoto is to video games what Walt Disney was to animation. To honour his achievements is to recognise the medium itself as art worthy of celebrating beyond simple entertainment or escapism. It's too easy to take for granted now the innovations Miyamoto made in terms of not just design and mechanics, but narrative. Just looking at the original Donkey Kong you can see an example of some of the very first cut scenes and characters with human proportions. If an Order of Culture is the Japanese equivalent of a knighthood, (or at least an MBE) then it goes without saying that it's absolutely deserved.

Re: Feature: The Seven-Year Silence: How Ocarina Of Time Held My Grief At Seven Years Old

Thank you for sharing your story, Ben. People criticise the stories of some Zelda games for having simplistic narratives or characterisation but I think there's often an emotional depth which speaks to universal childhood experiences, be it feeling like an outcast, leaving home for the first time or losing a loved one. Like yourself, I found comfort and courage in Link as an aspirational hero of a similar age to myself growing up. I hope the series continues to empower young players for many years to come.

Re: Nintendo States That It Has No Plans To Ditch Physical Media

HarryMurdoch

The main reason I hope Nintendo keep producing physical media is the storage space. I'd only be able to keep hold of a fraction of my games if they all had to be downloaded onto the system. Besides that I must admit that owning your games digitally is far more convenient, especially if you're trying to be economical with shelf space on your TV unit!

Any game I can get a proper physical cartridge for on Switch 2, I will. However, if it's a choice between a game key card and a digital copy I'm going fully digital. Key cards just feel like the worst of both worlds, especially if I've no plans of reselling my games.

Re: Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds "Year One" Edition Spotted Online

I wonder at SEGA's incentive is for putting this game back in store shelves. Is the game underperforming and they hope a renewed retail presence will boost sales? Alternatively, is the crossover content doing really well and they want to keep up momentum? Tbh what I reckon (and dread) the real reason to be is that Sonic doesn't have any new retail release planned for this year and this is all they can do to maintain his profile in stores until the next mainline game comes out.

Re: Mini Review: KINGDOM HEARTS III + Re Mind (DLC) - A Fair Switch 2 Port Of An Enjoyable 'Conclusion'

HarryMurdoch

I remember this game releasing when I was sharing a uni house with my best mate. He played both collections in the build up to its release and I watched him play most of it in the process. Trying to make sense of the story and finding ourselves weirdly attached to the characters in the process is one of my fondest gaming memories and a big reason why I'm considering getting the collection for Switch 2.

I remember my mate played KH3 on the PS4 Pro and changed the resolution in the system settings to 1080p to boost the framerate closer to 60fps. Surely with the Switch 2 equal to if not more powerful than PS4 Pro, doing something similar to its system settings might work?

Re: "Nintendo Didn't Swerve" - Product Growth Expert Comments On Zelda Vs. GTA 6

HarryMurdoch

As fun as it can be to put these games against each other, the boring truth is that they're not really in competition. OoT is a Switch 2 exclusive and GTA VI is releasing on everything but Nintendo.

What's more, I'd argue that what gamers expect from a AAA Western video game is fundamentally different to what they look for in a first party Nintendo release. Obviously there's overlap between these audiences as they're broadly speaking the most popular two styles of games. However, myself and many others in these comments can attest that whilst OoT is a massive deal for me, I'm simply uninterested in GTA VI.

There's also different, but arguably equally large stakes in these games for the companies releasing them. GTA is Rockstar's first big release since Red Dead 2 and arguably their biggest release ever. There's so much money and time invested into GTA that it needs to be massively successful or that's it for them. On the other hand, OoT could potentially be a big system seller for the Switch 2 itself. Many people, (myself included) are likely to buy the system specifically for this game and in the long run it'll likely be one of their evergreen titles for this console generation along with Mario Kart World.

Re: Talking Point: Nintendo Directs September 2026 Predictions - What Do You Hope To See?

HarryMurdoch

The Zelda 40th Direct feels like the right place to announce the next expansion to Super Nintendo World. It probably won't come out for another couple years and we'll likely just see some concept art of the area and ride (I'd guess either a shooting gallery or a dungeon themed escape room). I can imagine Miyamoto walking into frame to reveal it just before going into further deets on the movie.
