If you're looking forward to the release of Metaphor: ReFantazio on 12th November 2026, the good news is that you can try it out right now via a new demo on Switch 2.

The chaps over at Digital Foundry have gone hands-on with the demo, and have come away feeling somewhat perplexed. Essentially, the game looks pretty good in motion – better, perhaps, than even the PS5 – but it's when the world stands still that you start to get some funny visuals.

So when you're standing still in the game, the horizontal axis looks really sharp and clear, but there's a strange stepped pattern on the vertical axis, resulting in some pretty severe jagged visuals. When you start moving, however, things stabilise significantly. ReFantazio on other platforms like PS4 and PS5 suffers from shimmering thanks to a general lack of anti-aliasing, but it's actually surprisingly smooth on Switch 2.

The theory is that DLSS is in use, but the upscale just doesn't seem to be working properly on the vertical axis. In motion, the issue seems to be resolved to a degree, but it's definitely noticeable when standing still. DF believes that this is a genuine mistake on Atlus' part and not intended, so we'll have to wait and see if it's fully resolved in the future.

Despite the issue, DF is of the mind that this is still much more visually appealing than the PS4, while the PS5 just about beats the Switch 2.
