Despite directing one of the greatest survival horror games of all time with Resident Evil 2, game creator Hideki Kamiya has always been open about his aversion to scary stuff.
Now, in speaking with VGC, Kamiya has called out Capcom directly for supposedly having "no awareness" of how scary its flagship survival horror franchise really is. He says that despite wanting to experience this year's Resident Evil Requiem and revisit the ruined site of the R.P.D., he is unable to do so because of how much it scares him.

“I mean, just recently this year we had Resident Evil Requiem and the big return of Leon Kennedy, and he went back to Raccoon City, and he’s reliving all of those memories and all of those experiences. As somebody who directed that original game, Resident Evil 2, I was curious to know how that panned out for him. I wanted to experience that myself as a player, but the game was way too scary, and I couldn’t.
“And so, it’s not a joke. I legitimately wished it would include some kind of non-horror mode for people like me, because I talk to folks who are on the Resident Evil teams at Capcom just privately, and I tell them that their games are way too scary, and they’re like, ‘what, come on, they’re not that scary’. They seriously seem to have no awareness of how scary the things they make actually are, so I really hope they address that at some point.”
He goes on to suggest that Resident Evil take some inspiration from Bayonetta, which implemented the Naïve Angel Mode into its third entry to tone down some of the explicit content for those who do not wish to see it.
He suggests that Resident Evil could implement a mode in which the zombies have "brown paper bags on all of their heads", or rooms that are inherently dark and dingy have "really pleasant mood lighting" instead.
Ultimately, while it's tempting to mock such suggestions, what Kamiya is requesting here are essentially accessibility features to allow more players to experience the Resident Evil series. You can keep all the horror and gore intact for those who want the original, survival horror thrills, but implement a few tweaks to tone down the horror for those that need it.
Otherwise, despite being gifted codes from Capcom for each new Resident Evil entry, Kamiya says that he's simply unable to play them due to the strong horror content.
