In case you missed it, Square Enix has announced the action-RPG Crisis Core: Final Fantasy VII Reunion will be coming to multiple platforms including the Nintendo Switch this winter.
It claims to go "way beyond" a simple HD remaster - being a more "beautiful and accessible" version of Crisis Core and offering updated 3D models, full voiceovers and new music arrangements.
If the initial trailer reveal wasn't already enough, we've now gathered up a series of screenshots from Square Enix's official game website. While they're likely not the Switch version of the game, they still provide a glimpse at what to expect from this upcoming release. Enjoy!

Crisis Core was probably the best of the deluge of subpar FF7 side media.
That still means it was the best of a ton of lousy, crappy FF7 side content that fluffed and bloated the heck out of an otherwise... mediocre entry in the series. Important, culturally important, but mediocre.
I'm curious to see how this pans out.
Finally they choose the better game to remastered.
@Browny I could agree that F6>F7 .... but I wouldn't say F7 was mediocre. Just overrated. However these remakes well live up to the hype.
@YoshiF2
I would disagree that 6 is better than 7. 6 is plagued by a multitude of different problems, but was overall a more interesting product than 7 was.
6 was closer to a work of (flawed) art. 7 was a visual showpiece, flashy but devoid of real substance. And a very weak game on top of that.
@Browny Just curious... what's your favorite FF?
@YoshiF2
Personal favorite would be 9. But for all the love and adoration for the strong character driven plot and magical setting, as a game it is... well, in a word, boring.
Game looks good, but why did they change Cloud's hair black and change his name to Zack and I can't believe Square-Enix caved-in to the fandom and let Sephiroth become his life partner.
I'll ignore the above since FF7 is my favorite with FFT a close second.
But this is cool, had no idea they were doing this. Crisis Core was definitely a pretty fun game even if devoid of much thought behind any of the action.
Too bad Dirge of Cerberus will never get the same treatment, a niche entry into the FF7verse but I remember it being pretty fun but then again I thought Vincent was a badass.
thank god they didn't give the same treatment that killed type-0 in the west, with those horrible "hd" graphics that were inferior to the psp ones
if there is no significant change in gameplay, this is a game that I don't recommend to be played on any other platform than a portable one, crisis core is one of the few psp games that was actually made to be experienced in short sessions
@Browny I know FF7, FF6 or even 9 are not perfect games, and I also understand that we have phases in life where we are hypercritical with things in general, but try to have a little more pleasure in life, it must be very miserable and lonely to see things in such a pessimistic way
What even is crisis core? It’s a remake? Of what? I’m no veteran final fantasy 7 player so some context would be nice for new players. Anybody have any links I can visit to learn about it?
@lavtz
I wouldn't consider it pessimistic to acknowledge the flaws of the games I enjoy. 9 is, on top of my favorite FF, my favorite game of all time. I've played it more times than you can probably guess.
One can be critical of the media they love. Doesn't mean that same media hasn't brought me joy; I just won't put it on a pedestal or get my feathers ruffled when someone calls it a bad game.
@Talv Not to give too much away, but Crisis Core was a prequel to the original FF7 that was exclusive to the PSP.
What I'm wondering now is... just how big is that mobile game the Chibi version of FF7R.
Is it part one? part one and two? The whole thing? I would love to know and they have no answers...
@Shstrick oh! That should be interesting. Thanks!
@Rika_Yoshitake When they originally announced it they said it would cover the entire FF7 timeline including Before Crisis, Crisis Core, FF7, Advent Children, and Dirge of Cerberus. They also said they would release it episodically, So presumably it’s going to be massive.
I want to see the actual switch images
Surely this won't be a cloud game... (pun intented)
Lets go i can't wait for this one of best news I heard
@Shstrick wouldn't a prequel to 7 be 6 lol
I'm sweating for how detail this looks, is this allowed? Idk I'm too used to seeing anime style or cartoonist style of 3d models.
I might just play this even though I never played FF7
@Would_you_kindly The different numbered Final Fantasy games are not connected in any way. That's why some of them like FFX and FFXIII got direct sequels.
I really don't think this is going to run on Switch natively (unless they port the PSP version with minor improvements). That said, I really don't mind, I'll just play it on PS5 then.
@Browny Final Fantasy VII is the ultimate “at the time” game. I think its legacy is earned, but being at the cutting edge of 1997 bodes badly in a medium as rapidly evolving as this.
I played FF7 back when it released. It was massive and the best game I've ever played at that place in time. It also happened to be my first experience with a Final Fantasy game.
I bought FF8 straight after and that was no where near the same delightful experience I had with FF7.
The funny thing is though, when I finally played FF6... I think 2010 maybe... so many years after it's release. Dated graphics etc. I still felt... even in 2010... that FF6 was a better game. To this day it still ranks as my favorite in the entire series.
(Ps... I like the FF13 trilogy and I hate FF15.
Different strokes for different folks, as they say)
@Browny I have to agree. Despite the graphics of the original release, I have enjoyed FFIX. I have yet to play through X and X-2, and am hoping to put X-2 at the top with IX.
However, this is a game I go back to on my (“customized”) Vita, and try to finish but never have. I am SUPER excited for this game to release. I’m just hoping for decent performance.
these images are clearly not the Switch version yes it's obviously a visual downgrade compared to FF7 Remake but no way are those Switch graphics
@KoopaTheGamer
Nonsense. There's only a small handful of non-native Switch games and they're all ground up 8th and 9th gen AAA titles (barring the KH collection but that was because porting a dozen games for $90 wasn't deemed financially viable). This is a PSP remaster using new models and voice work.
This looks right on par with other Switch games. Not to mention, cloud games are always announced as such immediately so as to not create disappointment. That didn't happen, ergo, it's a native Switch game.
Just like these
@KBuckley27
Of course they always show PC screenshots. But the Switch version will be the same thing, just not as high res.
@Talv it's the story of the buster sword's original owner
@KBuckley27 i say that they are possible. Some images may be pre rendered cutscenes that look better, but the forest image is something that the switch can do
@JaxonH The thing is, the trailer looks much, much closer to the Final Fantasy VII Remake than the PSP original. Sure, they could make the Switch version pretty much just the PSP version with higher resolution, but that would disappoint a lot of people.
And while they could optimize the game specifically for Switch (like they did with Dragon Quest XI), that would cost a lot of money. I'm just being a realist, I don't see this game running on Switch if it's close to what they showed in the trailer. For every good port like Monster Hunter Rise, Dying Light or Alien Isolation, there are many sub-par ports as well.
@KoopaTheGamer
Nah, you're being way too pessimistic.
This game will run fine on Switch. Yes, it's less powerful, but it's no bologna sandwich either. It has countless games far more demanding than this.
I mean, the fact it's announced for Switch speaks for itself. Clearly they've got it running on the system or they wouldn't have announced it.
@JaxonH Trust me, I would like to be wrong. Anyway, I guess we will see in a few months.
Crisis Core is wonderful in many different ways. The battling was a bit weird, but the story and music were both moving. It really is a worthy prequel to FF7. The end of the game flows right into the beginning of FF7, so it is a treat to play Crisis Core then FF7 back to back. Really looking forward to this.
@Browny I'm right there with you with 9 being my favorite game ever. I don't think it's a boring game at all, though it is a bit slow with no real replay value. I do remember that it didn't click for me the first time I played it so maybe you're on to something 😏
Looks really nice and i love this game. But i feel that Switch need more love. Square is getting lazy they did 2 great FF spin offs for PSP, one PS2 port for PS Vita and just ports for Switch. Why they cant make a new RPG for portable devices in mind like Capcom did with Monster Hunter Rise
Type-0 needs love too
@Browny Crisis Core was not subpar or mediocre. People who think they are critics loooove to abuse the term mediocre (usually followed with the words "at best").
@JohntheRaptor
Hey, look!
It's another opinion that has as much value as my own! Except I don't need to downplay someone else's opinion to validate my own.
This would be great. I look forward to the release of this game. I knew there was a previous version for the PSP years ago but I never had a PSP so I never touched upon it. So now I like to take my swing at the buster blade.
@BTB20 what's the point in them being numbered if they aren't connected 🙈
@JaxonH I wouldn't say cloud games are always announced immediately after the announcement look at Hogwarts legacy it's very doubtful that will be native but still no confirmation & the new test drive being cancelled for Xbox one & PS4 but seemingly still coming to the switch I can only think it must be a cloud version
@Aneira I loved both 6 and 7 as well and would also agree that 6 is the superior game, and now when it comes to people who never played them in the 90s as new games and are going back and playing both of them, 6 has the huge advantage of aging much more gracefully in the visual department.
@Would_you_kindly *Spoilers (kind of?)
Without going too far into spoiler territory, they are somewhat connected now through the storyline of Stranger of Paradise.
@dimi I'm pretty sure Nintendo paid capcom to make monster hunter rise exclusively for the switch otherwise they would've released it on everything else
Loved the original, much more than the original FF7.
Still, I guess we know what kind of release it'll be in switch... C-C-Cloud Breaker!
Cya
Raziel-chan
Ever Crisis also ~ hopefully but im still hype for this supprise
Nice. Looking forward to this!
@Browny Medicore? FF7 has an amazing soundtrack, great locations and world to explore, one of the best villains in videogame history, had a wealth of content from mini games to end game bosses, a great selection of playable characters, and a story that whilst it loses its way at times, delivers some of the most iconic moments in videogame history!
Any FF fan will have an order of preference, and nostalgia for the game(s) you first played, but FF7 is not mediocre or overrated in any way, shape of form!!
@YoshiF2 I think FF6 is pretty overrated. The game´s gameplay is too weak. FF7 has much more freedom with the Materia system.
@Varkster no
@Ulysses Type-0 already has its (awful) remaster
@Would_you_kindly I can't tell if you're joking.
I thought it was Switch footage on Nintendo's YT channel. If it was footage on the more powerful platforms, then the graphics are a bit of a let down.
@Would_you_kindly that paid off well, 9 millions before the expansion across Switch and PC, if the expansion is a success it can go up to 14-15 millions. Nintendo should pay Square as well, it wont sell that good but it can still make up profit
Look, everyone. I just need to know if it'll be native.
@nocdaes FF7 is the peak of the series, and perhaps the genre. Don't listen to contrarians.
@Would_you_kindly that’s still just one instance out of how many “impossible” ports? That’s not enough to justify a pattern
Quite looking forward to it. Never had a PSP but was interested in the game.
Its cool that this PSP classic is getting new life but at the same time Im sooo sick of seeing FFVII. Square is acting like this is their only FF title that matters and they are just milking the living heck out of it. Its a neat world but not one that needs to be visited every year...how about some love for FFVI for once?
@BTB20 joking about what
@Ramen756 I'm just saying I wouldn't always assume it's going to be native just because they don't mention cloud right away if it's native to switch then I don't see why they wouldnt also release it on mobiles aswell
@Would_you_kindly there’s no evidence that they don’t mention it right away.
@Ramen756 well if either or both of those games I mentioned turn out to be cloud versions then that will be evidence
@Would_you_kindly just to nitpick - future events are probabilistic - that’s not evidence. That’s just speculation. With the actual, current evidence we have, you can’t come to the conclusion it might be a cloud game.
The actual evidence/facts we have are:
1) Companies have been clear about cloud versions since their announcements
2) Square Enix have only made three cloud ports while all others have run natively
3) We have one trailer of Hogwartz legacy. We don’t know what system the trailer footage is running on. The developers made no comment on the Switch version.
4) Every trailer for a cloud game that is uploaded to Nintendo’s YouTube EXPLICITLY mentions it in the description, in the title, and within the trailer itself. The Nintendo Switch trailer is up and makes no mention of it being cloud only anywhere in these areas.
Taken altogether, SE made no comment on the Switch version and since they have so far been transparent on a game’s status as a cloud game AND have a track record of making actual native ports, it is more reasonable to think that Crisis Core will run natively on the Switch. Admittedly, this is still an assumption, but it’s an assumption based on evidence, not on future guesses
@nocdaes
7 does have an amazing soundtrack. But so does every other FF game, so that's hardly a point in its favor overall; bangin' tunes is par for the course.
The world of FF7 is pretty barren and boring. It does have two standout locations, that being Midgar and Junon; this does make sense given the knowledge that the game was originally meant to take place entirely in Midgar, and probably should have.
Sephiroth is a lousier Kefka, and his infamy now is entirely after the fact. Go back to the original game, Sephiroth is hardly in the game and mostly forgettable.
The game did have a ton of mini games, and a few optional bosses. Some worse than others, but I won't nitpick.
The cast is okay. I have nothing against any of them, but I wouldn't put any of them on my favorites list. And I can think of one "iconic" scene, but scenes are merely parts of the whole product, and the whole product is mediocre; a few standouts won't change that.
In my experience, and this is anecdotal of course, the adoration for 7 (and to the same extent for 6) has a correlation to when the game was played, be it at release or as the first FF. Still doesn't change how mediocre the game is, especially compared to other entries in the series.
I'm actually really looking forward to this. 7 is my favourite entry in the series but I never had the opportunity to play through the side games. A friend of mine played it back when it came out on PSP and spoke highly of it. Can't wait!
@Browny Especially when your opinion is right. Crisis core was mediocre at best. All of those compilation games that came out 10 years after the original were trash. CC is just recyclable trash.
Might have to get this on PS4. I'm definitely about gameplay over graphics but the FFVII remake is equal as the best graphics I've ever seen and that was on a base PS4.
I would love to play the pixel remasters on switch please, Square Enix!
It would fix any financial problems you might have too.
