The tactical RPG genre can prove a tricky nut to crack for many gamers (this writer included!), so it's always nice when someone lends you a helping hand.
There are some excellent guide options out there for the recently released Triangle Strategy, too (ahem). In this case, though, Nintendo itself has divulged 10 'tactical tips' to help give you an edge in battle. They're pretty good too! None of this "check out the in-game settings to adjust your brightness" nonsense; no, these are genuinely useful hints and tips that are sure to give both newcomers and veterans a decent leg up.
Here's a rundown of the 10 tactical tips from Nintendo, but be sure to head over to the official page for a further breakdown of each. They're pretty self-explanatory, though:
- Positioning is the key to victory
- Carefully prepare for each encounter
- Wield the elements
- Speed is a virtue
- Train at the tavern
- Trade for powerful items
- Promote your allies
- Stock up on items
- Sharpen your swords (and other weapons)
- Explore your surroundings
There you have it; 10 tips to hopefully start you on the right track with Triangle Strategy. Remember to check out our full review of the game if you're still on the fence; we said it was a "triumph for Artdink and Square Enix" and awarded it a 9/10.
And if those tips are a little too elementary for you, feel free to check out our own guide to winning (triangle) strategies:

I'll try and remember these when I play the game in a year's time. Explore, items, allies, got it.
I loved the demo. Specifically, in the most recent demo, I was surprised to find the mindfield battles (practice sessions that still seemed to give you experience and prizes) in the encampment. As well as the ability to promote your units and enhance your weapons there.
I’m about 9 hours in and really loving it so far~ thanks for the v basic tips Nintendo haha at this point all things I should know but good for brand new players for sure.
What a fantastic game! I'm over 20 hours in and I just cannot put it away. The best SE game for many, many years, to me.
Step 1: Throw it in the trash. Lol
Hate to be that guy...just my opinion. Haha
Looking forward to playing this!
I'm about a third of the way through the game, I believe. My only real criticism is the lack of optional quests or repeatable random battles beyond the mock fights you can initiate in your encampment. Everything else is great!
Just use Huguette for everything lol.
She alone for me managed to wipe out half the >redacted< enemy invaders of your domicile including the OP enemy general in hard mode by dominating the roofs as long as you kill the mages first. Enemy archers will almost always miss when you have a 100% uptime blind status infliction arrow attack + you having significant high ground advantage. All the other enemy units can’t even touch you on roofs including the boss.
Didn’t even need to use the traps which I didn’t want to anyway because obvious implications due to >redacted<
Even in flat ground maps she has move seal arrows which is also very exploitable
Anyway the game is very addicting and the plot/lore so far reminds me of GoT before it went to crap [Your House is even pretty much like House Stark in plenty of ways] with the war and political games/schemes of the various factions with factions within factions
@invictus4000 So strategy games aren't for everyone. No need to be childish about it.
Too late, just beat it. Really enjoyed it too which I'm really glad to say after being kind of disappointed by Octopath.
E: Also having played on Normal difficulty I can very happily confirm that grinding (mock battles) isn't at all required in any point in the game.
Boring, Boring and Boring game. That´s my second kind of game. I love strategy rpg games, but LORD, this game is 90% boring story and only 10% GAMEPLAY. I wanna PLAY THE GAME, not READ A BOOK (or Listen a audio book, in case)!!!
This game looks lovely but sadly as an adult I just don't have the time to invest in another RPG. I have such a backlog already and really all I care about right now is Kirby.......if it ever gets here because I'm dying to play it. Perhaps later on in the year when things have quietened down I'll be able to find the time to invest in this game but until then I'll be waiting for Kirby and finishing Pokèmon Legends Arceus.
@Rykdrew Ahh cmon it's not that bad.
@Arawn93 Yes, I picked up on that, too. The world map is also clearly inspired by the intro credits sequence.
Can't put this game down. Finding the complaints that it's too much reading to be pretty laughable considering it's on par with most of the other AAA RPGs that have picked up industry acclaim. It's really nothing too unreasonable.
Both demos lowered my excitement from "Day 1!" to "It's Okay" with the last demo putting me at a comfortable "I'll pick it up if it's cheap one day".
Really disappointing and that's coming from someone who's top 3 games ever Include FFT, which I've played through at least 10 times.
Feels very slow with very generic characters, bad voice acting and a ho hum story that didn't have me the least intrigued. Oh well.
Love this game. Though it’s a bit heavier on story than gameplay (which for me, especially in this case, isn’t a knock at all to the game because the story is great), when you do get to the gameplay it’s a surprisingly deep and entertaining srpg. This is the successor to FF Tactics we’ve been waiting for. I know many will say I’m crazy (and, yes, I’ve finished Horizon, and, no, I haven’t a full opinion I’m only a few hours in), but this is my early GotY contender at the moment. Triangle Strategy is simply one of my favorite genres done absolutely right. The world is a better place for having this game and Three Houses.
I am SO...DESPERATELY... IN LOVE WITH THIS GAME.
I played the first demo and, I liked it. It was good. But being thrown into the middle of the story I had no connections to the characters.
Then I played the Prologue Demo which features Ch. 1-3, and while the story didn't ramp up in the early game, the battles were excellent and I was impressed with the characters and dialog. Very good stuff. Grounded and relatable.
Transferred save to full game, and BAM! Chapter 4 immediately throws you into the thick of it, and the story takes off. By Chapter 6 I was so invested in the story- the characters, their motivations, and the warring Kingdoms, I just couldn't put the game down.
Now I'm in Chapter 7 and I feel like I'm in Norzelia myself. I will die to protect my best friend, the Prince! We stand and fight! The choices are grueling- I genuinely wasn't sure if I would be able to convince my allies to defend him- they were set to hand him over to the Aesfrosti army. Vote barely passed 4-3. I was on the edge of my seat!
Now we're cornered, walled up in a mountain village, with the full might of the empire marching on us with the infamous General Avlora herself leading the charge. Ppl are dead. The realm is shattered. Nobody is coming to help us. But we will stand and fight! If I have to torch every house in the village to do it- I am prepared to make whatever sacrifice is necessary. The Prince must live!
Games like this are so incredibly rare. Oh my gosh, I gotta hurry up and finish typing this so I can make my stand against the Aesfrosti army. So, here's some more tips. Maybe they'll come in useful...
JAXON'S TIPS
The Wall
Block off access to a narrow passage with 3 units side by side (the middle unit can also be one square behind the side units). This prevents enemies from follow up attacks and back attacks. It's also a good strategy when being pinched from 2 directions. Keep your healer and ranged units safely in the middle with a wall of units a few squares out on each side.
NOTE: Certain units have skills which can effectively create a wall for you, such as the ice mage which creates a line of 3 ice blocks. This is a great alternative option to wall off enemies if you're being pinched and need to focus your troops on one side first.
Protect Your Back
Whether you face away from a wall or place characters back to back, you always want to protect your back to avoid critical hits from the enemy.
Lock Ins Can Be Dangerous
While it is possible to lock an enemy in place with units on all 4 sides of them, it leaves you extremely vulnerable to back attacks and squeeze attacks with follow ups. Use with caution
Over Extending Can Be Dangerous
The lone man approach. Sending a single unit out into the midst of a number of enemies without any protection or backup can be a fatal mistake. You're left open to crits from the backside, squeeze attacks with follow ups, and you'll be the sole target of numerous enemies. Travel in at least pairs of 2.
Clusters Can Be Dangerous
You don't want to over extend and lone man it, so you might be tempted to cluster your units together and move as a group. This too can be catastrophic. If a mage with an AoE attack gets in range, they can pummel 3 or 4 of your units in one fell swoop. So you don't want to over extend, but you also don't want to cluster.
Watch Turn Order
The turn order is critical when making proper risk assessments. Know who moves when, and how long it would take for your healer to get in range if needed, or backup to arrive.
@UglyCasanova
Feels very slow with very generic characters, bad voice acting and a ho hum story that didn't have me the least intrigued. Oh well
Only the first 3 chapters are a bit slow as it sets the table for plot and story. One or two voice actors are meh but the rest are actually pretty dang good. I really enjoy listening to everything voiced.
The characters are incredibly grounded and relatable, and the story is, no kidding, one of the most enthralling and addicting of any game I've played in years.
I'm about half way through the game, and I can already safely say this is my new favorite SRPG I've ever played, even topping Fire Emblem, and it may end up in my fave games of all time list. It's just so incredibly good. The strategy gameplay is top shelf, the characters and story are impressively good- waaaay better than I was expecting.
Chapters 1-3 set the stage, then chapter 4 is the inciting incident, and from there on, it pops off hard. I can't stop thinking about this game now. I'm that utterly infatuated with it.
Explore should be number 1. You gain unique items, upgrade materials and useful story materials. Talk to everyone no matter what. Sometimes more than once as it can trigger new options. Anybody that found the pink rock knows what I am talking about. I haven’t had this much fun in a long time. It’s so good.
Also pay attention to your convictions (the game let's you know when they are changed) and they function as your reputation to recruit characters (among other impacts).
I can't get the theme song out of my head.
TRIANGLE STRATEGY KIMI NOOOOOOOOOO
I cant wait to play this and find out just how strategic this triangle truly is…
@Ontrevant Nah, I love strategy games. Just think the art style is butt ugly and the battle system was bloated and slow and the story was convoluted (based on the demos). Definitely in the minority here and again...just one guy's opinion.
@LEGEND_MARIOID playing? Its a book, not a game. 5 hours in and i think i had 2 battles.
Really dissapointed in this game. Its a choose your own adventure book with a very basic strategy battle system that happens every couple hours of game "play" or so.. the worst part is the game is based on the decisions you make but thats a hidden system so you dont know what impact your decisions are having. No strategy there.
@Jamesshinobi Are you still playing it? Do you mean a visual novel (I actually regularly read books)? I have no qualms. The reviews across the board seem to be ok with it generally speaking. We'll see how much I like it.
No. I havent played it since Saturday night. No real urge to. Its 90% readimg amd 10% very basic tactics game. The story is basic and borimg ro boot. Im totally turned off from this companys offerings and feel ripped off
Still waiting for my Limited Edition order to ship Pretty much my most anticipated game in quite a while...hope they honour the order.
Got pretty far in the Demo already without even seeing this tip. What I am doing is getting the Goblin Cash those are worth more then the tips but they come with strong bosses.
I played a little bit of the demo and hot strong fire emblem three houses vibes, so I did like it but idk if I'm gonna buy it yet, if I do this will come in handy!
