Gameloft - the creators of the Asphalt series - will be bringing a free-to-play Disney racer to Nintendo Switch this summer.
It's called Disney Speedstorm. This title will feature a "legendary roster" of characters and tracks inspired by series from the Disney and Pixar universe. There'll also be new seasons and content added in regularly to keep the experience fresh.
In addition to this will be cross-platform support as well as split-screen and online multiplayer modes. Will you be participating? Comment down below.

Didn't expect a follow up to Mickey's Speedway USA but I'll take it.
Dang it, Its free to play!
Maybe there's a chance but, a free to play Disney Racer, Might as well play it, I mean its free.
If this is like Mario Kart Tour on mobile, I could bite. If it’s just a cash grab, I’ll be pretty annoyed. MKT kept my interest for a while (tho not still).
Can't Wait for mickey mouse death stare memes.
Too burnt by Disney's....(sigh)...recent stuff right now and MK8D's more courses and free to play isn't helping, Easy Skip.
If they add, Anne Boonchuy and the Plantar family, Captain America, Brandy and Mr Whiskers, Dipper and Mabel, and Peter Griffin. I'll change my mind.
Have to admit, my heart sank when they said it was F2P, but Fortnite and Rocket League are both F2P and great fun to play, so I'll certainly give this a chance. It's just the physical collector in me that's sad
When I saw it was gameloft making the game I immediately knew it was F2P and I also immediately knew that people are gonna hate it.
Dang...!
Free-2-Play ?!
Sorry, absolutely NO for me.
Any chance of this being good instantly vanished the second they said "Gameloft".
@gcunit But rocket league used to be payed, they just went ftp recently.
f2p kinda killed any hype I had with this...but I will wait and see. Mulan is in it...add Tiana and I'll go...I'll be upset but I'll go.
I'm mildly interested in this as it looks like a follow-up to Mickey's Speedway USA on the Nintendo 64 with Pixar characters added.
If I can play as Wreck-It Ralph with his vehicle from Sonic & All-Stars Racing Transformed, Belle, Scrooge McDuck and either Carl or Russell riding a Kevin-inspired vehicle, I'm game.
eeeeeewwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwww
For the price of free? Yeah. If it's terrible it goes right in the deleted bin. No skin off my nose.
I thought it looked bad - especially on the same feed as the MK announcement - but if it's free to try I may as well try it.
Meanwhile, Nintendo charging money for retro DLC for a 2014 game...
I may check it out once it's available but it being a free-to-play game means I probably won't be staying for the long run.
I like Asphalt 9. It's very arcadey and a ton of grinding is required but it has good tracks.
Yeah I would buy a game where I can race as captain Jack Sparrow
I was very excited until I heard it was F2P. For one, I wanted a physical version to always have and play. Secondly, if it was good I wanted to be able to play this year's down the line when switch is long past its prime. The idea of having levels and grinding races to unlock things appeals to me, but if there's no single player championship, and if it asks for money and buy gems all the time, no thanks. Hesitantly curious, but likely not going to bother. Chocobo Racing is still looking fun tho.
I also get very worried when I see a game genre that's well established, such as a Kart Racer, get the f2p treatment. In my mind it immediately is the beginning of the end for that genre. Soon all other similar type games will say me too, and do some dumb f2p thing. I fear in 10 years time when half of nintendos awesome games are a service, and that is partly why I collect old video games. I will always have something I can play on my own terms, without some company wanting me to purchase gems and crystals and skins etc.
Why does the trailer only mention Switch? Isn't it coming to other consoles?
The courses look great but the karts and outfits are terrible. It's like embarrassed to be Disney?
I didn't notice the free-to-play part of the announcement, however, this is a game that I feel my kids will love (given they love both Disney and Mario Kart and the game combines those two things).
So is Disney just not making real video games ever again? Nothing but free to play, micro-translation fests from now on, I guess 🤷
Come on now guys, don't be shy go ahead and try. It is free to play after all.
@Banjo-
It is, but if you watch it from Nintendo it only shows it for switch cause why would they want to highlight it being on other consoles they want you to play it on switch.
@zapswitch That makes sense but it's confusing :S. Sometimes you see all the small logos at the end of the trailer.
@zapswitch
I don't want free stuffs.
I want a paid stuff with all contents inside physical release and can be played offline.
I will never like Free-2-Play things.
I love how people are like "Remakes?! Take my money for a game I already own!" but when a new f2p game comes along it's "omg noooo never it's horrible even though I have no way of knowing first hand"!!!
People are strange creatures. Anyway I'll be trying this for sure since I'm not paying full price for a what..6..7 year old Mario Kart game?
@Banjo- If they mention crossplay then it's also coming to the other platforms as well. Anyways here's a teaser of the game.
@UglyCasanova
I'm not strange.
I like to collect games in physical.
I never like free-2-play games since you don't own the games physically.
@Banjo- I would much rather take the game from 2014 than a F2P Title from Gameloft. Mobile quality gaming
"free to play" = enthusiasm killer.
@Anti-Matter
Yeah but its nice if you're broke
@zapswitch
I will not even want to try free-2-play games even when I'm broke.
I will not support free-2-play games practice as i have a bold statement to be an old school gamer (keep supporting games in physical release with all contents inside) and I am against pay-2-continue mechanism from free-2-play games.
@Anti-Matter
Are you that type of guy that boots up his nes just to play mario 3 instead of just playing it on the switch online service?
@zapswitch
I am dinosaur.
Old school gamer.
I prefer playing games with actual disc or cartridge on actual machines rather than playing digital only games in any form (Online service or free 2 play).
If and only if this game was 100% properly optimized for the Switch, with the same, consistent frame rate across the board along the other platforms, then I won't be skeptical about crossplay.
@Anti-Matter guess that means that good games that are download only are off the table? (Freedom planet octodad Kirby fighters 2 etc)
I’ll give it a try, but I’m not expecting much. Disney’s game division has been incredibly disappointing. I don’t trust them. As a free-to-play title, I’ll look at it, but it will have to be extremely good for me to put any money into it. I’m still irritated over Disney Infinity.
@Banjo- Thats good to hear, it might actually be good.
@Greatluigi
I don't play those games either.
I think I can continue to hunt other machine games (PS3, PS4, 3DS, etc) while I have no plan at the moment to get some upcoming Switch games during year 2022.
Where's Luke Skywalker? or Homer Simpson?
I would have been hyped had the free to play part not been included. We'll obviously still investigate
Oh! Didn't know this was Free To Play. If it plays less restrictive than Asphalt 9 I might actually enjoy this one.
I was interested until they said "free to play".
Looks nice. And the abilities could be a good incentive to play different characters.
I would really love to have a remaster/remake or sequel to „Walt Disney World Quest: Magical Racing Tour“ on switch. Loved that game on my PS.
If they don't want me to sign up to something that's pulling my data 24/7 and spam me with their woke garbage content from Disney+, I might as well give it a try.
Not the best time to reveal a Disney kart racer, big reveal everyone thinks nice, then Nintendo go and reveal a 48 Mario Kart 8 Deluxe DLC package, savage.
F2P always a concern... will have to wait and see how much it'll really end up costing when new content is released.
I totally get not wanting to play F2P games, but they can be a nice thing to have on the market. It's cool that my kids will have a new thing to play around with and I don't have to spend a dime on a game that may or may not hold their interest long enough to justify a purchase.
It's also mind-blowing that they get a game for free that they could potentially spend hours and hours on. When I was their age, the cheapest video game experience I could have was playing the Pizza Hut PSX demo disc, playing Crash, MGS, or Tomb Raider demos, and wondering what the rest of those games were like. You better believe I would've grinded out for hours to get progress in those games.
The future of games may be dystopian in a lot of ways and it's way easier to be cynical as an adult, but it's not all bad. I've definitely spent far more money for far less gameplay on arcade games back in the day. The real villain is MTX in paid games; they took away my cheat codes and unlockables.
Well, it looks good enough... Better than Chocobo Racing anyways... and the price of admission is making it worth a try at least.
I don't mind f2p anyways. I splurged plenty of cash on Asphalt 9 and while I am not playing it any more, I can always get back into it and I still spent way less than a full priced game.
@gcunit same but I'll give it a go, my only concern is what content is inevitably locked behind a paywall
@Banjo- Imagine complaining about having to pay mere 25$ for 48 tracks lol
@Specter_of-the_OLED Thank you, I see "consoles" in that trailer (second 18). The reveal trailer only mentioned "Switch".
@mariomaster96 But what I said is true, though. If that makes you feel better, I pre-ordered it.
@Casco Cool!
@Snatcher If you like really arcadey racers, you'll like Asphalt 9. The only problem is that there is a lot of grinding unless you pay but it's free to play so you can try it. They also have improved the game technically since launch so I think that what they have learnt will help them making this new game better. I don't know, we'll see. I don't see any reason to bash the game yet.
Wonder if Winnie the Pooh will be selectable?
@Banjo- so happy that you approve!
@Casco That's the right thing to do. Not so happy that you disapprove my point, though!
@Banjo- I’m good with your point man. Just my previous experience with Gameloft tells me this is in no way a game that would compete with MK8 in terms of quality.
@Casco And I respect that 100% (that's what I said "cool"). In spite of my comment, I pre-ordered the Course Pass. I'm interested in Disney Speed Storm, too.
Sugar Rush better be on it
@HotGoomba Why is that? Gameloft made some good Wii games back in the day.
@Anti-Matter There are some free-to-play games that do (eventually) provide all the content without needing to pay and can mostly be played offline like "Pokémon Shuffle" and "Pokémon Rumble World."
They're still digital downloads that will someday have their online components disabled (although most of the content will still be playable), and there's the potential possibility of losing access to them if your 3DS dies or gets lost/stolen someday after the eShop has shut down (since you can't backup the data of 3DS games with online connectivity), but then again they're free, so you still haven't really lost much there, especially if you've already obtained 100% completion by then.
We'll have to wait and see where on the free-to-play spectrum this game falls...
@BulbasaurusRex
That's why I will pick Pokemon Rumble 3DS, in physical version as all the game contents is already inside the cartridge. I will not pick the digital version as free-2-play model as I have my bold statement, No free-2-play games model unless it has full games in physical release. I don't like Freebies with that model.
@Anti-Matter Well, I got a version of the game with just as much content that is almost entirely in my 3DS memory that I'm still playing these days and haven't had to pay a dime. I call that a win.
As I said, with the right kind of structure, it's easily worth giving up a few minor concessions to play a game for absolutely free.
@BulbasaurusRex Yeah. Exactly. They used to make ok games, but now they just make soulless games.
@Banjo- I honestly don't know the hate for Gameloft. I liked Gameloft.
I played a crap ton of Asphalt 8 a few years ago. Never regretted it
@Banjo- I played asphalt 9 on Switch. Its pretty good for the most part. I really got to redownload it again on my Switch.
But asphalt 8 is good though
@anoyonmus The first one I played was on the Nintendo DS and was one of my favourite games for it along with the Sonic Rush games, the kind of games with a lot of replayability and great for any time of the day.
