Super Mario Sunshine gets a pretty bad rep these days, largely for its insistence that players have to clean up an entire island of gunk. The innovative FLUDD mechanics, which involve using water jets to upgrade Mario's platforming skills, were not for everyone — and they were sometimes pretty hard to use.
Imagine a Super Mario Sunshine with more traditional platforming — in the style of Super Mario Galaxy, perhaps — and you have Super Mario Starshine, a fan-made project that takes away all of the goo-based gameplay from the former, and adds in elements from the latter in kind. Luigi, Captain Toad, and jumping without the use of liquid turn Super Mario Sunshine's levels into something new. Have a look at the prologue to get an idea of what it's like:
It's pretty impressive to see just how well these two games fuse together, with a lot of the level design from Sunshine kept in place, just with the addition of collectibles, bosses, and items from Galaxy.
The name itself is borrowed from Super Mario Galaxy's Starshine Beach Galaxy, which is themed around Sunshine's Isle Delfino hub area.
Would you play this fusion game? Or are you a staunch defender of Sunshine, and think it needs no tweaks? Let us know in the comments.

Looks really cool, modders never fail to impress.
Huh if done right, this could actually be pretty cool
The best and bester have combined to become the bestest!
This is so cool and is going on my bucket list of games to play this winter. Thanks for sharing as this is one of the most enticing mods I’ve seen in a while!
Ehh, FLUDD has its charm, removing it removes the appeal of Sunshine (FLUDD allows you to do some crazy combos that let you go pretty much anywhere you want). So this is pretty much just Galaxy with a Sunshine coat of paint.
wow, this looks awesome ngl though I kinda like sunshine but I wonder what it'll be like when it's complete!
ooh this looks nice
It kinda highlights how slow Galaxy is compared to Sunshine XD
Not that I prefer Sunshine, but it's a fun observation
A lot of the creative jumping around in Sunshine is gone if you remove FLUDD. But it's my least favorite 3D Mario, so whatever, let modders have at it.
Where can you get ghe rom?
I love Sunshine so give me FLUDD or give me death!
When Luigi said you could "kill the piranha plant with that" it felt really weird. I don't claim to have the right of it, but I think Nintendo wouldn't use the word "kill" in any modern Mario game. "Defeat" probably
Fun fact my first Mario game is Mario sunshine!
Heck I apparently loved the game so much my parents had to get like 3 copies because I always lose them! 😅
I def want to play this mod, but man, Nintendo better leave it alone lol
Mario sunshine, but the controls are good.
Sunshine looks better by far.. why so much hate for this wonderful game.
Sunshine levels without the awful Sunshine controls? I’m all in baby!
When I first played sunshine when all stars came out I was very surprised. It is really good and in my opinion the second best Mario game( behind galaxy of course.) honestly Mario 64 is more in line with how sunshine is viewed then sunshine is.
Seems pretty lame tbh. Sunshine's levels are heavily designed around FLUDD mechanics and won't be nearly as fun to play around in if you remove FLUDD from the picture.
Luigi: "There's a green shell around here somewhere. Maybe you can kill the piranha plant with it."
Well that got dark real fast.
Nice Galaxy mod! I know Sunshine modding is in its infancy but it would be super cool to have the opposite: a Sunshine mod with Galaxy themed levels.
@Aurumonado that is also being made actually!

@SPG64 Looks great! I'll join the SME discord.
This is amaaaaaaazing I wanna play this badly, I don't like Marip Sunshine, this is perfect for me!
To be honest, I never played sunshine until the Switch version, and I do NOT like it. The Fludd thing is just annoying as hell.
Give me this version for sure.
@Patendo Google or maybe click the video's Youtube link and look there. Sites like NL are not allowed to link to such things.
I enjoyed Sunshine's platforming, can't entirely say I'd prefer this. Cool to have options though.
