After being rated in Australia and Brazil, box art and screenshots for a new Monkey Ball game have now surfaced online.
As previously revealed by these classification boards, the game is known as Super Monkey Ball Banana Mania and will apparently be coming to all platforms including the Nintendo Switch.
The same tweets suggest we'll learn more about this game at Nintendo's upcoming E3 Direct:
Our very own Nintendo Life video producer Jon Cartwright has provided his own thoughts - noting how the screenshots match up with Super Monkey Ball 2 and appear to incorporate the art style of Super Monkey Ball: Banana Blitz HD:
A reveal at Nintendo's Direct presentation would make a lot of sense considering the history the Super Monkey Ball series has with Nintendo hardware. After Sega's Dreamcast failed, the original game was brought across to the GameCube in 2001 and followed with the sequel's release in 2002.
The existence of a new game dates back to last June when the Monkey Ball announcer Brian Matt teased a new project. This was followed by Yakuza creator Toshihiro Nagoshi mentioning how he would like to do more with the Monkey Ball series.

I hope it’s good!
Wow that was fast from the last MB title but I’m
Hoping for even more exciting E3 announcements from Sega.
I hope this is at the Nintendo Direct tomorrow.
I hope they have the multiplayer mini games, those were great back in the day.
People are about to be reminded how insanely difficult SMB2 got in its later stages. I'd be happy to buy it on the Switch and be savaged all over again though. It's one of the all-time greats.
I'm not a big fan of this series but my sister loves it.
Come on, we all know who is going to lose it over this.
@JasmineDragon Oh my gosh, even banana blitz is insanely difficult. It was the first actual MB game I’ve purchased after I used to play it at the dentist as a kid. I can’t beat the bonus levels, let alone champion medal them. It’s the hardest game I’ve ever played, and I dread the fact that I’ll probably buy this one.
Huh, looks like updated old levels? Seems like it'll be a sort of "best-of" from the original two games(or perhaps another Monkey Ball Deluxe deal and have ALL of the old levels and minigames)
I guess Sonic Mania has really given Sega a new perspective for looking back on a fan-favorite series. Even has Mania in the title lol
Sounds like a sequel to Super Monkey Ball: Banana Blitz. Hope it's good.
Wish they would have used the old artsyle, but I'll totally take this.
This also had better have multiplayer in the puzzle stages like 1 and 2 do.
Hoping this is the two GC games with all minigames intact, if so I'm in!
I'm still waiting for a good sale on Banana Blitz.
Never really understood the appeal of this series.
If it’s 1 & 2 with a new coat of paint, I’m in. Some of the music I still have stuck in my head. Years later
@Neweegee "Even has Mania in the title lol"
I think you cracked the code! Jet Set Radio Mania next please. 😉
It says Anniversary Edition at the top, its the 20th anniversary of the original game launching, these guys are finding proof of Monkey Ball 2 levels being in here. Seems like a safe bet that this is a remaster of 1 and 2, quite possible a remaster of Deluxe (which for those unfamiliar was 1 and 2 combined plus some extra levels). Which sounds awesome, maybe they even added more levels on top of that, they wouldn't have to do that, but that'd be amazing, 1 and 2 were the series at it's best, so more of that is absolutely welcome. You'd think something else is being added beyond just a new coat of paint given the new title.
Also, this probably goes without saying, but Monkey Target better be in there, and man if they added more maps for that, oh snap, I'd lose it.
I hope it’s a new Super Monkey Ball Deluxe!* that game was my childhood! I loved the story mode, the levels, the multiplayer & the mini games!
*basically a compilation released including remasters of levels, mini games, etc from 1 & 2, plus extras
@duffmmann
Finally somebody else who knows about Super Monkey Ball Deluxe!
@Clyde_Radcliffe How about some F-Zero Mania combining GX and AX. So crazy how Sega were behind those games.
Even as someone who's not nostalgic about SMB or has ever played it, I have to say I'm not a fan of how they redesigned the main monkey. Especially how his eyeballs are the same color as his fur.
@Toy_Link Considering how little you actually look head on to your monkey, not to mention that you see them through a translucent sphere that affects color and lighting as it is, it's a pretty easy change to overlook in my opinion.
I was never able to wrap my child brain around the original Super Monkey Ball on GameCube, but if this is good I might pick it up for Switch and give the series a fair shake.
The first Super Monkey Ball was pure gold. The rest - not so much. As such, I really hope the new game will take its cues from the original.
@duffmmann Monkey Target for the win!!! Great times!
Morning everyone. Anything interesting happen over night?
@GrailUK “I'm walking on sunshine…” 🎵
@Tandy255 Aw mate, I am chuffed to bits. if it features in the direct, I will be a little miffed it leaked. But then again...not too much hee hee. Man alive, it's just become a very long 10 hours or so till the Direct!
I hope its gas smb1 monkey target and billiards! I still play these on the gamecube with my brothers. Amazing fun
@JasmineDragon Totally, Super Monkey Ball 2 is a beast. I use Dark Souls as a warm-up for that game.
If this is based on the first two Gamecube games I’m absolutely sold. They were brilliant.
What an ugly boxart
Or am I spoiled with Mario+Rabbids Sparks of hope boxart?
Thank you Nintendolife for spoiling the surprise! Really, you should do that with every game that will appear in the Direct, so we don't get any surprises at all! Who likes to be surprised? Nobody!
Too bad. Really, too bad. You should have just said that there was a Sega game leaked, that's all, and then those who don't care come to check it out. This only encourages me not to get in this website before any Direct...
People interested in a good Monkey Ball game should check out Marble It Up! and Glyph (thanks @AlexOlney), both great indie ball-rolling games with fantastic level designs. Glyph is more about bouncing/air time though.
So here's hoping this one's good!
Pretty sure those screenshots resemble MB 2:
The first one seems to be the mini game Monkey Dogfight, the second Level 10 of Beginner mode.
No Billards = No Purchase.
Make my Mum a Switch addict, Sega! You did it with the Gamecube!!!
I've read online that this is essentially a remaster of Super Monkey Ball Deluxe (which was a SMB1 & SMB2 with extra party games bundle for Xbox/PS2). If that's the case then this will be an easy purchase to make!
My family and I used to play the monkey ball golf game all the time, hope that comes back.
What this means to me is a couple hours of frustrating gameplay followed by infinite catharsis by watching speedrunners destroy it. All in all, super excited for this one.
@citizenerased Thanks! Another one I am curious about is Paperball Deluxe, but I haven’t purchased it yet.
Even if this is a remaster of the 1&2 collection they released, Super Monkey Ball Deluxe, it's a day 1 purchase for me, as those were the best two back on Gamecube
@Ralizah the original 2 are really fun puzzle games with decent multiplayer and nice late 90s arcade style graphics. Everything else since they changed the art style has been pretty trash
YES! FINALLY!
I need this in PC though; switch will likely be at 30 fps
If it runs at 60fps then I'm fine.
I'm happy to see this has been officially announced now. Some of the mini games that were shown, looks like they could be fun as well.
