I’m calling it, Animal Crossing will win. TLOU2 and GoT fans will be so busy arguing among each other that the supreme Isabelle stans will pull ACNH over the line.
Definitely voting for fall guys, bugsnax, hyrule warriors, cause that’s all I’ve gotten to on this list
Out of the games on that list that I have played it would have to be Last of Us 2.
It there was a most disappointing game of the year category then Doom Eternal would be my pick.
A lot of heavy hitters, but to be honest, Bugsnax is just gonna sweep all the categories.
I'm loving Hyrule Warriors, even though I'm a little burnt out by the Musou formula. But game of the year? Not even close.
Most likely going to Animal Crossing, but I can see Genshin Impact winning for similar reasons I'd expect Fortnite to win (except its not 2018, so no one cares THAT much about Fortnite anymore)
Wouldn't Among Us technically be ineligible? It was released in 2018.
10 votes for Hades.
@RupeeClock These are nominees for the best games of 2020, not the best NEW games of 2020! Just like how Counter Strike continues to get nominated for "Best eSports Game" every year , I think it's only fair to nominate the games that have given the greatest impact this year, even if it isn't brand new!
Support Xenoblade <3 It deserves so much more love!
Cant vote if you're not on social media eh?
@nerdface Hades is definitely my pick. Even before 1.0 it was the best game I’d played all year. Both my GOTY this year and last were indies, Disco Elysium and now Hades.
woo played a whopping 0 out of the list
Ori might be my pick, it's such an Underrated game, I want this to win so badly
I've played Animal Crossing and Xenoblade and... that's it. So I can't offer a valid, well-informed opinion.
I guess my game of the year would be Animal Crossing. I haven't given it a lot of thought. Haven't played a lot of new games this year besides that and Doom Eternal.
@TheFullAndy Just curious what you found disappointing about Doom Eternal? I personally enjoyed it though I think 2016 was the better game. I wasn't crazy about how it forced you into a very rigid combat loop whereas most Doom games give you the freedom to use whichever weapons you please at any given moment.
You all argue quality. But in the end Fortnite will win.
I suppose they have to put at least one or two Nintendo games on the list, and I suppose Nintendo managed to release one, and outsourced to another company for another. Animal crossing was guaranteed a place on this list, because it was up against...3D all stars? Does all stars even count?
@Moistnado replying to myself. Clubhouse games, pikmin and jump rope challenge mini game. Slim pickings
Xenoblade Chronicles Definitive Edition is my GOTY 2020. Such a shame it wasn't nominated for best RPG. Persona 5 Royal is just as much an "enhanced version" as Xenoblade Chronicles Definitive Edition (arguably less so since it's not even a full remaster) so it should've been up there.
Animal crossing in the best multiplayer category.... No 😂
Best family game had to go paper mario for me it was such a blast, shame there wasn't many other Nintendo nominees
Ghost of tushima took the main votes for me
Origami King didn't make the list but Bugsnax did 😶
That's an easy pick for Hades from me
Xenoblade is dominated for this, but not best score? Yes it’s a remaster, but 2/3 of the tracks were reorchestrated.
@Giygas_95
It is a well made game but every gameplay decision id Software made just seemed to suck the fun out of the game for me. You already mention the combat loop with certain weapons for certain demons, but there is also the increased jumping sections with the fiddly wall climbing mechanic, the constant need to stop what you are doing to find grunts to kill which ruins the boss fights most of all. Then there is other things I am not a fan of such as the new art style, the new story telling style with third person cutscenes, the story itself with the time jump, the hub area which feels as anti Doom as it gets.
I loved Doom 2016 and had sky high optimism for Eternal but, and this is something someone else wrote that I agree with, it feels like the people who made Doom Eternal must have hated Doom 2016 with all the changes made taking the pure joy away that was in the original game.
That is why Eternal is the most disappointing game of the year, hell the generation, for me.
@TheFullAndy Oh yeah, I also hated the swimming sections. And the purple sludge that slows you down. Because Doom really needed to be slowed down.
@Giygas_95
Aye that too! So disappointing.
Out of the nominations I voted for
Too bad Trials of Mana remake or Paper Mario: the Origami King didn't make the cut. They're more deserving than something like Genshin Impact. Surprised Bugsnax made it in too (it could be a lot better than I'm giving it credit for, but I'm hearing much more about Astro's Playroom & Sackboy's Adventure in that sphere, and neither of those is nominated in this list).
I voted ACNH, Age of Calamity, Xenoblade Chronicles, and Among us.
@Slinkoy1
Among us is free on mobile. You can check it out if you have free 30 minutes
@RR529
If LoU2 wasn’t in TOK would have won the most controversial game if that was a category. It’s definitely the most controversial game in the series
Out of the games on the list that I’ve played, I’d go for XBC or Hades. I love Xenoblade to death but Hades might be the top pick, lordylordy has that game well written dialogue and. VA.
@RupeeClock by that logic, persona 5 royal wouldn't be eligible either, it released in japan in 2019
@iceicebb
I was under the impression that games for nomination or awards had to be released the year of that awards show, but I've since learned that's not the case.
@JoeyTS, @RupeeClock, @iceicebb, TBF TGA seems very inconsistent with their own rules (this year at least).
In most categories the titles do have to have been released in the past year (the entire reason they added the "ongoing game" category a couple years in was so that popular relavent GaS titles such as Fortnite could still get recognition even though they're ineligible for other awards). In that regard Among Us should be disqualified for best mobile game, by their own guidelines, no matter if it's more popular this year than when it came out.
Similarly, in past years HD remasters, "GotY" editions & the like were automatically disqualified for most awards (in fact, I believe they even tried out a "best remaster" category for a couple years, similar to the "ongoing game" situation, to still give such releases a platform), but here we are with Persona 5, Mortal Kombat 11, & Street Fighter V (& Xenoblade DE in the player's choice section) getting a second chance at an award with slightly touched up re-releases, which again is supposed to be against their own rules.
I personally don't mind, but think it'd be nice if they would have a bit more consistency in general (there's way too many categories they drop or replace after one or two years, for example).
EDIT: Just finished reading their FAQ, and they do indeed state that games released in previous years are eligible for any category if the jurors decide that any new content/social relivence is worthy of note. This does appear to be a break from how it was the first few years, and I wish they would have made a public statement regarding the change as it's caused some confusion.
@RR529 Well I was going to respond, but your edit puts it perfectly. To say it has caused confusion is an overstatement entirely though. I wasnt even phased by it as many weren't either quite honestly. When I think of best mobile games this year, I think of Among Us! Doesnt matter that it came out before 2020, it had the biggest impact in 2020!
@JoeyTS, I'm conflicted about the premise personally. If a film came out 5 years ago and went unnoticed, the Oscars, Golden Globes (etc.) aren't going to nominate it today if it suddenly took off in popular culture. Should TGA be any different in that regard?
@nessisonett You forgot that Game Awards is rigged. TLOU2 will win the Family/friendly section against AC:NH and will be GOY against GOT
@RR529 Well yeah sure. Those are movies, these are games. Completely different forms of media! Old movies don't get patches and updates, games can and they do. Including Among Us! Or like how Harry Styles and Taylor Swift still get Artist of the Year awards even though they aren't new artists. They just had the greatest impact in the year as does Among Us even if it isnt a new game
@Shiro28 TLOU 2 isn't even a nominee in the family friendly category...it's an M rated game! 😌
@Shiro28 Ok boomer
@JoeyTS, fair enough on the updates (though there's an argument to be made of whether or not an old game with a few updates should be allowed to "displace" a fully new game for a nom).
However your music analogy is flawed, as the stated artists will only win artist of the year based on songs/albums (and maybe events) they've done in the past year. It's the same as an actor winning best actor (it's based on something they've done in the past year, not their past work).
In any case I found this video to be interesting, even if the narrator is a bit dull.
"The Game Awards: Why We Need Better"
https://youtu.be/3kv3rCo5CAU
@RR529 Different yes but flawed, I don't believe so. An artist gets nominated based on songs, albums, and events of the past year sure. Among Us is getting nominated based on the impact of this year. So why it makes sense is because while the game isn't new (just as the artist isn't new), the impact they leave on the year is new. An artist can go unnoticed one year but then get nominated a year later just as Among Us went unnoticed but then got nominated. Because of the impact they make! At the end of the day, TGA can make their own rules and if this is allowed then that's that!
@nessisonett dude is a joke. Also if you got nothing better to say than "ok Boomer" then just don't say anything. ok boomer?
@JoeyTS Is a joke, of course is not a family friendly game.
@RR529 huh, interesting.
Tom nook is gonna keep those who don't vote for ACNH in debt for a LOOOOOOOOOOOOOONG time
