It's fair to say that Super Mario Odyssey has been a smash hit with critics and the gaming public alike. While your humble scribe enjoyed playing through the game at a sedentary pace, taking the time to enjoy his surroundings and search for power moons along the way, some gamers are in much more of a rush to whizz through the game.
It's a testament to the versatility of Super Mario Odyssey that the speedrunning community has embraced it as much as it has. Premier speedrunning site Speedrun.com now has over 1000 attempts at the fastest time to complete the game, which makes it one of the most tackled games on the site to date.
The record for completing Super Mario Odyssey currently stands at 1h 05m 14s, which was set by US based nedeahS, quite an impressive feat. On the other end of the scale is a user affectionately known as Glob who completed the game in 17h 32m 12s. Maybe next time, eh?
Have you tried your hand at speedrunning through Odyssey yet or do you prefer to take your time? Let us know with a comment below.

That is amazing
I don't like speed running. Think of it from a programmers point of view, all the little bits put in by them, like a trash bag down an alley, that these speed runners don't care about (unless it crashes the game somehow to skip to a different level)
Impressive
Although I didn't time it I know that I beat Glob. Best news for me so far in 2018!
@Equinox It adds a new layer to a game. After finishing a game, you can play it again, but you need new challenges to make it interesting. Completing a level as fast as possible is very addictive.
You don't enjoy a game by speedrunning.
@Bunkerneath I don't think things like that are necessarily something they don't care about. Speed running through this game in particular takes a tremendous amount of skill and practice so it could be said they're appreciating the game in an entirely different way.
The appeal of competitive speedrunning is much like the appeal of competitive running; to push yourself to be faster than the next guy (or possibly just yourself).
It's not any 'better' than normal play, just as running to the shops isn't any better than walking. But some people like it. And that's fine.
And for those of us who prefer to take things at a more leisurely pace, we have Glob. We stand with Glob. And occasionally step forwards.
I am Glob
I am Glob too....wish i was i mean
@arpaktiko lol, even 17 hours would be amazingly speedy for me! I like your avatar, btw!
@Bunkerneath I don't think speedrunners don't care about the experience of the game. Most speedrunners play through the game at least once casually to enjoy it as intended. I used to be like you too. I used to hate speedrunners and thought they just didn't care about simply enjoying the game as intended.
It's quite the opposite. It takes someone who loves the game to be able to play it nonstop over and over again trying to uncover everything about how the game works in order to get through it as fast as possible. It wasn't until I started to watch some gdqs that I realized just how much these runners know the game inside and out and how so many of them have a deeper appreciation of how the game is designed due to picking it apart.
the 100% speed-run in 12h 57m 04s is nice. however, i think it can be done faster. (but not by me) i still have issues with many goals to grant me an acceptable 100% speed run.
remind me to post my speed-run for world peace later. it is less than 1h 24m 07s which is faster than the current record. but for us people who play Super Mario Odyssey day in and day out should be able to beat that record by now.
also the record of 1h 05m 14s of any% percent complete is easy for me to complete faster, but only but one second...lol just like everyone else i am gaining the ability to get through this game faster with each time i play.
i also looked through the rules. i never knew about the exclusive First Moon Skip on version 1.0.0. i played the game enough to find a lot more glitches to take advantage of; which allow you to finish the game in less than 30 minutes... one of those glitches alow you to skip some required power moons.
i only used assist mode a few times, but i only needed it to complete certain goals the first time. but that was up untill my second time playing the game.
i played the game all the way in assist mode twice and found a few odd glitches. i think one was intentional. Nintendo needs to update the game so that assist mode is not available until the basic story-line is complete (with world peace).
in my opinion, that mode is only needed to learn the game. it only keeps the game fun when learning the physics behind mario's movements, the movements of his enemies, as well as the world around him.
Mario being able to breath under water in assist mode is annoying to me. i almost thought it was a glitch the first time around because it happened outside of assist mode. but now i know Nintendo did that intentionally in assist mode.
i hope that Nintendo will add additional difficulty modes in the future.
I'm pretty sure the user "Glob" was on a blind playthrough and decided to time it. Therefore it was somehow allowed according to the rules although, it isn't really a "speedrun". That said, the handling of submissions on Any% is such a mess. I could claim to have got a 1:41:23 without a video or proof, and the mods on the Odyssey speedrun site would allow the submission. Lol. I'm not sure if they examine whether or not the player who submitted the run did it legitimately unless it's like a top 20 time or something.
Therefore, it's kinda questionable if the game actually has 1000 runners. At least 25% of that board has no video-proof of the time that they got. Hell, someone got a 1:20:01, and that got through without a video, because you need a video if you want to submit a 1:20:00 time or under...
Anyway, point is that the game seems to be a great start for speedrunning. Looks flashy yet the tricks aren't exactly difficult. I guess you could say the game has a low skill floor but a high skill ceiling. That's why it's kind of blown up in the world of speedrunning. Also, it has been a way to increase replayability out of Odyssey. On youtube I always see popular youtubers gushing over this game and how it introduced them/encouraged them to speedrun it. I think Alpharad was the latest case.
I imagine that speedrunners are capable of doing what they are doing because they have already invested a great amount of time into enjoying the small nuances of the game. For any who are concerned that it ruins the experience, please consider that speed running is simply a post-game activity. One cannot really be good at speedrunning unless they have explored the game extensively. Anyone who speedruns by copying others without properly playing the game — perhaps by copying YouTube videos - is just silly and shouldn't be taken seriously.
I'm watching my 7 year old speedrun Xenoblade Chronicles 2 and skip cut scenes. That is what I think is tragic.
Glob is my spirit animal.
Glob is my spirit animal.
Glob is my spirit animal.
Glob is my spirit animal.
Speedrunning is the kind of thing that is super cool to hear about but actually watching is effing boring.
