Earlier this week it was fully confirmed that RiME (that's the correct capitalisation) is coming to the Nintendo Switch. Developer Tequila Works, along with publishing partners Grey Box and Six Foot, have now confirmed that it'll arrive in May.
The PS4 and Xbox One also have a physical retail version coming, but right now it's download-only on Nintendo Switch (as it is on PC). As mentioned previously, this was a PS4 exclusive when revealed at Gamescom in 2014, but has now evolved into a multi-platform release.
You can see the trailer again below, along with a pitch from the press release.
RiME is a single-player puzzle adventure about discovery, experienced through the eyes of a young boy who awakens on a mysterious island after shipwrecking off its coast. Players must navigate the island's secrets by making use of light, sound, perspective and even time. Inspired by the rugged, sunbaked terrain of the Mediterranean coast, RiME paints its breathtaking world with a fusion of vibrant colors and moving musical undertones to set the stage for the deeply personal journey that awaits within.
It'll be interesting to see how the final game turns out; it certainly looks rather promising.

Hard to tell with this kind of game whether it'll be a hit like Journey or just something that fades into obscurity. Looks pretty good, but time will tell.
And with that gets downgraded from a potential launch buy to a "when on sale" buy.
So no retail version. That's a little disappointing and not a vote of confidence.
They must of had a dev kit for some time now or it's just that easy to port. Hoping more for the second part.
I think that there will be a Switch retail version. They just can't show it yet. I'm expectin an announcmente after the big event next week.
Download only? That is hugely disappointing, probably means I won't be buying as sad as that sounds
I'll probably still look into it, regardless. Besides, I prefer to only buy Nintendo games at retail, not third party.
I couldn't be less excited for this game. Doesn't look to have an identity of it's own. No, I'll likely be too immersed in A Breath of the Wild to give this even the fleeting of glances.
Hmm, retail for Xbox and PS4 but not for Switch? This makes me wonder whether I buy it for Switch or the other two in retail. Gonna be a spontaneous decision, I think.
Probably no retail because they didn't know whether they could port it fast enough.
They could, which is only positive thing. Might mean that it is quite easy to port for Switch.
Argh, this is going to be frustrating. Beyond the potential space constraints on Switch... I don't love discs nor wearing out disc drives, so I'm usually OK with forgoing a disc version for a download version. But I'm the opposite with cartridges... Smaller, no spinning, no scratches. I think they are the ideal format and a better investment.
I worry that many Switch games will be download-only and it will hurt both gamers and publishers.
Looks beautiful and I look forward to seeing more. And I don't care if we get downloads/digital versions for all games coming to the Switch. I obviously know there will be retail games on cartridges, but the point is if we're getting good games, we're getting good games. Man people can be really fickle and picky and then we all wonder why we can't have nice third party games on our system. "I'm not going to buy this game because they're not selling it in a box even though it's a good game" just sounds really petty to me. And before we start talking memory, let's wait until the 12th 😉
Makes no difference to me since I would have bought this digital anyway. Most of my 3DS collection is digital because I'm more likely to make an impluse purchase (particularly with 3rd parties) of something interesting I see scrolling the eshop rather than sitting in a box on a shelf. Plus though I adore cartridges, I'm not trying to lug dozens of them around. Just bring the game, make it good, and you have my attention.
Lack of a retail option does have me wondering if this was a last minute decision and if so, are we seeing the ease of portability Pachter spoke of? Because that would be really good news.
"but right now it's download-only on Nintendo Switch"
Boo. I am intrigued by this game. Will wait for reviews and if good hope for a physical release on Switch.
That's the problem with indie games on Switch — they are forced to be digital for financial reasons. The download speeds better be decent and there better be larger storage chips than 100-some gigs.
Blast. I barely buy digital since getting the prepaid cards ando adding funds is a hassle. If I could buy directly with my credit card maybe I'd try more indies
@SLIGEACH_EIRE It's not unsurprising, but is disconcerting. Reasons being the Switch carts def cost more to produce, which ultimately means less physical indies & smaller scale games, which will result in full SD cards relatively quickly (although if they are easy to remove and insert it may not be all bad).
Regardless, if there is a physical version, I'll get it (because that is what I prefer), but if I really want to play the game and it's only digital, I'll download it.
I was going to buy the digital version regardless, but this will be a PS4 purchase for me. Seems more fitting in an ironic way, and I have 1TB to fill on that system, doubt the Switch will get that much of internal storage.
I will give this game a try
LAURA KATE DALE AND EMILY ROGERS DIDN'T PREDICT THIS, DID THEY!? LOOKS LIKE A PRETTY BIG DEAL AND THEY DIDN'T SAY A THING! SO I GUESS THEY DON'T KNOW EVERYTHING - HUH!?
@Rhydas THEY KNOW EVERYTHING
@Rhydas Not really that big of a deal...certainly won't be selling any systems.
This game is gonna be one of the greats of this year. Think 'The Witness' meats Ice featuring Zelda.
@KirbyTheVampire Commercial success aside, I for one hope it's nothing like Journey. I'm much more keen on the Wind Waker comparison - there's a lot more actually entertaining stuff to do in that game in my opinion.
Eh. I only buy digital games when they are really cheap usually since they have no value once you're finished playing. I guess I'll be waiting for a sale also.
@Luna_110 you can buy games with your credit card as well
@gortsi
The American eshop only accepts cards from USA, and I don't have any of those since I don't live there.
I'm sure Switch still have Physical retails. If Switch will digital download all, Switch MUST have Large enough Internal storage that we don't know yet until Switch presentation. From first trailer we saw a guy who inserted a 3DS game card alike on top of Switch. Game card confirmed, physical available confirmed.
Yeah looks interesting
@KirbyTheVampire A new game for the Switch is a big deal - regardless of it being a system seller or not. Nintendo games do a good enough job of that anyway. You should know by now that more third party games can only be a good thing.
That aside, my point is that we need to stop giving Laura Kate Dale and others like her so much spotlight attention when they certainly don't deserve it. Anymore than the average person, anyway.
@ACK YOU JEST, GOOD SIR!
@Luna_110 You've always been able to pay with your card on 3DS and Wii U... I think even as far back on the Wii. My point is they wouldn't just remove that ease of purchase - doing so will cost them possible sales. It'll definitely be one of the things they will have considered when creating the Switch' online services.
@Rhydas
..... As I said before, you can, only with cards emitted in the US. Which restricts the rest of the world that uses the American eShop. Why not allow any valid credit card and charge the amount in dollars, like when you buy in eBay or Amazon?
@Luna_110 Oh whoops - didn't see your second comment. My apologies for that. And while I can't say for certain on why that is, I imagine its for the same reasons they made the consoles region-locked. Maybe to stop possible hackers getting whatever game they want where Nintendo aren't properly rated/licensed?
Well, the only solutions I can think of are to maybe stick to the region specific e-shop your locked into and buy games from there. Or get a US card somehow...
If you're lucky, Switch will be region-free like the rumors say.
@Rhydas
That's my problem - Latin America doesn't have access to the eShop. I think Mexico has, but south from there? We don't exist.
I usually buy the prepaid cards, but it is a pain when I'm missing a small amount to get a game or DLC.
See, we can't even get it as a Retail-version, just download. Just shows in what for ballpark we are: Wii u 2 incoming!!
@Luna_110 That does sound damn near frustrating... Is getting a north American credit card an option at all?
@Henmii "The PS4 and Xbox One also have a physical retail version coming, but >right now< it's download-only on Nintendo Switch." That hardly means Switch is screwed...
@Rhydas,
But the me it says enough! They could have done a Retail version on Switch from the start. A Retail version on Switch probably won't happen at all.
@Rhydas
It isn't. Practically all require you to have a social security number, which requires the famous green card.
Let's just hope Nintendo makes its system less backwards now.
Sorry, but i won't buy this game if will be only downloaded.
