With the beginning of another week we have the Nintendo Download Update details for Europe, showing us what goodies are coming to the eShop later this week. It's a short list this time, with all new releases on 3DS along with the usual batch of discounts across both current-gen platforms. Let's get to it.
Wii U eShop Temporary Discounts
Another World - 20th Anniversary Edition (Digital Lounge, €3.99 / £3.59 until 27th October, normally €7.99 / £7.19)
Never Alone (E-Line Media, €2.99 / £2.59 until 27th October, normally €14.99 / £12.99)
Chompy Chomp Chomp Party (Utopian World of Sandwiches, €5.49 / £4.49 until 10th November, normally €10.99 / £8.99)
STEEL RIVALS (nuGAME, €4.99 / £4.49 until 13th November, normally €6.99 / £5.99)
3DS Retail Download
Disney Magical World 2 (Nintendo, €39.99 / £34.99) - This follow up once again offers a sim / adventure experience within a whole load of Disney settings; it's likely to be ridiculously charming, too. Famous franchises such as Frozen are included, and we were certainly quite impressed in our preview - we'll see whether it's a truly magical experience in our review.
3DS eShop
Chase: Cold Case Investigations - Distant Memories (Aksys Games, €4.79 / £ 4.80 when discount is redeemed for 20 Gold Points in My Nintendo, normally €5.99 / £6.00) - An eye-catching project led by Taisuke Kanasaki and developed by the talents of multiple staff from the now shuttered CiNG studio. They're well known for narrative-driven titles on the DS in particular, including the likes of Trace Memory, Hotel Dusk: Room 215 and Last Window: The Secret of Cape West. This one seems to boast a noir-style, an intriguing plot, and the opportunity to investigate crime scenes and interrogate suspects. We'll crack the case of whether this is worth a look in our review.
Ash (CIRCLE Entertainment, €3.99 / £3.99) - The latest in a relatively long line of classic-style RPGs to arrive at a budget price on the 3DS eShop. This one sticks to retro ideas but has issues with balancing, in particular, as we explained in our Ash review.
3DS eShop Temporary Discounts
Jett Rocket II - The Wrath of Taikai (Shin'en Multimedia, €6.70 / £5.70 until 3rd November, normally €8.99 / £7.66)
Another World - 20th Anniversary Edition (Digital Lounge, €3.99 / £3.59 until 27th October, normally €7.99 / £7.19)
Gunslugs (Engine Software, €0.99 / £0.89 until 20th October, normally €1.99 / £1.79)
Gunslugs 2 (Engine Software, €2.49 / £2.19 until 20th October, normally €4.99 / £4.49)
Snow Moto Racing 3D (Zordix AB, €5.99 / £5.39 until 20th October, normally €7.99 / £7.19)
Splat the Difference (Lightwood Games, €3.75 / £3.30 until 27th October, normally €5.00 / £4.50)
Witch & Hero 2 (CIRCLE Entertainment, €2.99 / £2.39 until 3rd November, normally €3.99 / £3.19)
Chain Blaster (Joindots, €4.49 / £3.77 until 27th October, normally €4.99 / £4.19)
Jump Trials Supreme (Joindots, €4.49 / £3.77 until 27th October, normally €4.99 / £4.19)

Dreadful week for Wii U. No new games. Just straight to a few eShop discounts. Nintendo knew this was coming after Paper Mario: Colour Splash' release last week. The very minimum they could have done was have a few Virtual Console titles with temporary discounts. Or add new VC titles. Do something, be seen to at least be trying. This week without a doubt takes the crown for Wii U as its worst ever.
Wii U Direct incoming? lol No!
Edit: Just seen that Paper Mario: ColoUr Splash reached no.8 in the All Formats UK chart and no.14 in the All Prices UK chart. Very respectable debut.
@SLIGEACH_EIRE I generally agree (just because Disney Magical World 2 isn't my thing and it's such a short list of new releases), but I think Chase looks interesting. I may grab it with the My Nintendo discount, anyway.
@ThomasBW84 I should have clarified, it's a dreadful week for Wii U.
More?
Wow. What a week
Terrible week indeed. Prepare for comments like 'Direct confirmed'
Disney Magical World 2- finally! Really excited for it as the first was great fun. Looking forward to playing it!
Definitely Chase. Loved Hotel Dusk and Last Window.
Wow....hmmmmm.......gotta be something in the works?
Will get Chompy on discount.
Would have been a nice week to release FZero X on VC...
"Yet no new Turbografx-16 games this week" ought to become a meme...
As an enormous fan of Dusk and Last Window, definitely Chase this week for me, and maybe Never Alone as i've been interested in that for the longest time.
I'm a bit worried about Chase nonetheless as i've heard it's rather short and lacking, but i really want to support the developers so future episodes can get made.
It's all about the Chase this week.
@EllenJMiller The Chase is on every week.
time to sell up people.
Nothing interesting this time... Which is fine, as I already have more than enough to play. Dragon Quest VII, Colour Splash, and I have to get through BlazBlue CP and XBlaze 2 before BlazBlue CF drops next month!
Rubbish week, but I don't really expect another good week for the Wii U until Breath of the Wild launches. Unless Nintendo pull their finger out and have a decent sale, but that's unlikely.
I really want Luigi Manson 2 to go on sale for Halloween, it's still £39.99 I think it should be a select by now. I've been waiting years for a reduction.
Seems like a usual week of notable downloads on the WiiU, oh wait, there isn't any.
A bit tempted by Never Alone. Do you recommend it? I remember there existed bugs at the release. Have they been patched?
God what a terrible week!
20 gold coins for a 1.2 EUR discount is not a good deal tbh. Might as well save them for something else.
@SLIGEACH_EIRE Wii U's worst weeks are still yet to come
Just Chase.
I say it will just be Chase for me this week (and a good reason to spend my gold points) as I love both Hotel Dusk and Last Window. I am disappointed that it is a new set of characters but hopefully it will a good game (not expecting it to be as long given the price).
(Turns to Wii Shop Channel)
I don't really mind this week, still busy enjoying Paper Mario.
Never Alone has gone cheap enough for me to throw it a bone, so this is actually a good week for Wii U in my book.
And there are simply not enough kangaroo-based games around so Crazy Kangaroo will be my show of support for the sub genre.
Not surprised given Color Splash came out on Friday. I wonder when the ALBW pack is coming though, surely if NX is being announced anytime soon that DLC would be released within a week or so it doesn't get buried by NX news.
Of course Nintendo could reveal NX in 2017 though.
Already got 10-in-1 Arcade collection with a previous discount.
@SLIGEACH_EIRE Agree.I still want the first Super Smash Bros. and F-Zero X on Wii U VC.
Chase: Cold Case Investigations - Distant Memories looks tempting, but I'll wait for a review and to vastly reduce my backlog.
@jimi Thanks for the info. That is just lazy by the developer to not fix the bugs. I will probably get the Chompy Chomp party game instead.
Just Chase for me. Not sure about the discount. Might not using the discount send a message that the rewards need improvement? It's cheap enough to begin with.
@Sakura I'm all for voting with wallets, but here it doesn't make sense to me, as it is a decent offer. Let's say there would be launch discounts on all games through my Nintendo - I'd be quite content with that.
I believe, not using this reward on purpose will not scream "free stuff", but just show up in the data as "discounts on older big name titles working better". And you don't want more discounts on old stuff games, do you?
Never Alone is great, from a cultural viewpoint. Gameplay is so so. But a bargain all the same.
@lifer Hmm, yes, that's why I'm asking myself the question. As a percentage discount, it's not too bad, but it only equates to £1.20. Normally, I would be waiting for something more worthwhile in terms of actual monetary saving.
Though, I think perhaps you are right. More launch game discounts would be desirable. The rewards that aren't good are the discounts off of games already owned or bought more cheaply physically. A very good case, in fact, for going for this discount to indicate preference for launch discounts. And I have lots of gold coins so using a few won't be a problem. In fact, I haven't used any so far. Thanks for the input. Now decided to go for it.
Nothing for me on Nintendo systems but PSVR is released this week, YEAH!!!
I'm tempted by Chase, but I kind of want to play Last Window first.
10th October no NX
And the comedy show continues ...
Disney Magical World 2: "only" 39.95 in the official eShop.
I know, many will say
"But hey, I dont want to carry around these elephant-sized cartridges, they are sooo heavy and theres no space in my room, no pockets in my pants and the next town with running water is 100 miles north, hence I prefer to pay more for a digital download. That way I keep the enviroment safe and also Nintendos bank account. Clever, no?"
Sure, you can buy it for 34.95 off e.g. MMOGA at the SAME TIME ...but hey, you wont get the highly sought after gold coins, cause you sure dont want to miss out on the steal-of-week "20 Gold Coins for a 20% Discount on a 5 Euro Title" promotion.
Big applause for the marketing department responsible for the 13th October 2016, you deserved it:
When people said "But no, there is no way these clowns would ever manage to offer something decent, let alone any real promotions. Best that will happen is that they will continue to rip you off for overpriced digital downloads" - I kept on defending you, Nintendo, and this week you proved me right, Thank you. I go and grab 2 digital copies of Mickey Mouse off the eShop now.
Cant wait for next weeks "Super Cyber Black Sales Monday" on the eShop... I guess the servers will break down this night and Nintendos stocks will surpass Apple by tomorrow morning.
I'm hoping Chase comes to North America. I loved Hotel Dusk.
Would it kill them to at least sell us some more GBA games?
In the absence of anything on Wii U, Nintendo could at least build their Virtual Console library.
@ironside1911 nice comment.
One point though: I think you're mistaken for of thing, as you should get the same points if you buy the game from MMOGA. I often get games via code as it saves money, and is actually quite convenient now that you can redeem them on the web. Since the start of my Nintendo I got gold points for every single game I got that way. Should be six or seven by now.
Bunkering hundreds of unused points...:/ I'm glad to get Chase, and it may sound weird, but I kinda wished it would reduce the treasure chest by more than 10... At least it puts the points to use...
@lifer Ah, thanks for the notice. I wasnt aware of that. So yes, when they even add the points to it, mmoga should be the official eshop for new releases.
Only thing Im wondering about is the point structure - like, when mmoga decides to, say, sell Mario Party Rush for 9.95 - the generated code will have the retail price in the shop and I get full points? Did you buy any discounted games?
It's official, the Wii U is dead, no news on NX. Moving on to Xbox One.
I sound like a broken record but how can you launch a new VC console like the Turbografx and not only not update it for months but STILL have no new game weeks? Surly preparing that there's plenty of new TG games to launch would have been better then just "Here, have 3 and we'll look into adding more eventually!
Perhaps you should have spread out those cheap shovelware released on the eShop a bit more NOE. That would be a little better then nothing....
You know it is bad for the Wii U when Nintendo doesn't even bother to throw a token Virtual Console game out there. I mean they haven't released classics like Pro Wrestling or Yoshi's Cookie for NES, Star Fox 64, F-Zero X, Mario Party, and Hey You! Pikachu! for N64. Heck they could even do their normal shtick and release the GBA Classic NES Series on Virtual Console (I mean a virtual console release of a game that was a re-release of something already on the eShop.... how have they not done this already?!?). Not to mention the missing Nintendogs and touch generation games on DS.
Seriously, they aren't even trying anymore.
Terrible awful week. Embarrassing!
And don't tell me there's a Direct this week because there never is.
This looks to me like it could be the worst week of all time, lol
But nearly half of voters are downloading Chase. That's gone completely under my radar. Is it any good? What's the dealio?
@ironside1911 You definitely get points based on the default eShop price. I don't know how that would make it the official eShop, but it certainly makes it an attractive alternative. Other online retailers have good offers for codes, too, so it's worth shopping around.
That would actually make a good NL article. I bet these alternatives aren't widely known yet, even among fans.
This week is so terrible, there must be a Nintendo Direct coming! In this Direct, it will be revealed that NX is a downloadable firmware update for Wii U! Right after the Direct, Nintendo will release playable demos of Wii Sports 3, Super Mario Universe and Metroid Prime 4, all full games to be released later this year for NX-enabled Wii Us!
Chase Cold Case and Gunslugs for me this week.
@Mahe Just missing the mario-guy on some stage demonstrating how to turn the Wii-U into a NX while eating a burger with one hand and entering & confirming his credit card details with the other before downloading the firmware.
Could work .. 149.95$ for the add-on.
Same time, they will release the "New Wii-U", which will be basically the same as the Wii-U but with a new color, more storage, 3 more led lights and the new firmware already installed sold at same price as the Wii-U on first day. The Wii-U case will be also interchangeable and you can get green for only 29.95.
Else, they wouldnt really let it quietly die and pretend like it never existed, now would they?
Every time I click one of these articles, I do it with a small ray of hope that Smash 64 will be available on Wii U. Every week that small ray of hope gets smaller.
I'm still disappointed Nintendo didn't buy cing when they were in trouble, they'd have been a great fit. So I'll definitely be getting the chase game, and will finally get to use some of my gold coins too!

Unbelievably bad! Would it kill them to squeeze out a virtual console game on Wii U???? Smh!!
its boring everyone! QUIT BORING EVERYONE!!!
@johnodaz
Think twice about Gunslugs, I didn't like it.
Nothing new on the Wii U eShop doesn't necessarily mean we don't get anything new. For the ones interested, Skylanders Imaginators will release this week on retail (disc only).
@Hey-Cha-La Oh ok cheers dude!!
@TossedLlama
I hope Cold Case will be released in North America too... however, I'm not holding out hope.
Cing never released Last Window: Secret of Cape West to North America and I ended up having to import the game from an eBayer from the UK who somehow had dozens of copies of the game.
Although I'm not happy about that possibility, I guess it's not the end of the world really, as there are so many titles out there to play...
Chase: Cold Case Investigations - Distant Memories for sure. I'm pretty sure that will be an amazing game like all the old games from the top devs.
Never Alone has a really crazy awesome discount, every Wii U gamer who loves beautiful sidescrolling platformers should buy that. It's an excellent game, though I am quite disappointed that the developer didn't bring the Foxtales DLC to Wii U. But anyways, you also get 20 gold coins in My Nintendo for just 3 euros. So awesome game and 20 gold coins for little value. Go for it!
@TossedLlama
DS games are not region locked, so all DS imports will work on your 3DS. But the 3DS games are region locked, so you can only play region specific games with your region locked 3DS.
@TossedLlama
Yes, it can get confusing! But it's nice the 3DS can play any and all DS games. Have a good one!
look at all that virtual console!!!
