Zach Cregger's Resident Evil has taken critics by storm - it's already the highest-rated video game movie ever - meaning fans of the series and horror alike should probably give it a watch.

For those who can't make it to the cinema, then you'll need to wait until it arrives on VOD (video on demand), streaming or DVD / Blu-ray. As a Sony Pictures release, you won't be waiting too long - and though we don't have a specific date at the time of writing, we have a solid window of when it arrive.

When will the Resident Evil movie be coming to streaming and VOD?

Though there haven't been any announcements on exact dates, based on Sony Pictures's previous releases, we have a good idea of approximately when Resident Evil will be available to buy and stream.

Resident Evil VOD release date estimate

Resident Evil will release first through video on demand (i.e. being able to purchase digitally through the likes of Apple TV, Amazon Prime etc) around four to six weeks after its cinema release (if this year's releases 28 Years Later: The Bone Temple and The Breadwinner are anything to go by).

This means we're looking at mid-October to early-November VOD release.

Resident Evil streaming release date estimate, and where will it be streaming?

Based on the likes of The Bone Temple, Resident Evil should be arriving on streaming platforms between two and three months after its cinema release - meaning a likely mid-November to mid-December streaming debut.

As for where to stream it, it depends on your location. In the US, Sony Pictures movies release on Netflix, whereas in the UK, Sky Cinema and Now TV is where it'll end up, according to Digital Spy's take on The Bone Temple's distribution.

(There is a worldwide deal in place between Sony Pictures and Netflix for post-cinema releases, but that doesn't kick in fully until early 2029.)

When will the Resident Evil movie be on physical / DVD / Blu-ray?

Unlike streaming and VOD, Sony Pictures' physical releases are a little less predictable, but expect it to be closer to the streaming release date of around two to three months after it debuts in cinemas.

As such, expect it to release by mid-December - perfectly timed for a Christmas, if you fancy a spooky festive film to see out the year and The Nightmare Before Christmas isn't doing the trick.
