Shine Sprites from Super Mario Sunshine have made their return in Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door, and they’re one of the many collectibles you’ll find throughout the game.

Shine Sprites are extremely useful as they can be spent to upgrade your characters, so finding every Shine Sprite is definitely worth your while!

In this guide, we've given you a full list of every Shine Sprite in the game, sorted by chapter and then location. Get ready to do some exploring!

All Shine Sprite Locations

Below, we've listed the location of every single Shine Sprite in Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door. We've broken these down by chapter and location.

Some Shine Sprites will require you to backtrack to previous locations after getting new partners, but these are worth grabbing as soon as you can so your characters can be up to date.

Chapter 1 Shine Sprites

Hooktail Castle Shine Sprite #1

The first Shine Sprite in the game is available after you make your way through the Dull Bones horde. It’s in the next room in a bright yellow block – you can’t miss it.

This Shine Sprite is on the third floor of Hooktail Castle in the storage room where you first meet Ms. Mowz. You can’t miss this one either!

The final Shine Sprite of this area is on the fourth floor of Hooktail Castle right in front of the locked door. They made this one pretty easy to find, too!

Rogueport Sewers Shine Sprite #1

After clearing Hooktail Castle, head back to the Thousand-Year Door room and use paper mode to slip between the bars. Hop on the spring, fly across to the other side in airplane mode and then use this spring. The Shine Sprite is in a block right here!

Chapter 2 Shine Sprites

In the airplane area with the black tree stumps, enter the pipe and use Koops’ shell to hit the Shine Sprite block.

In the room where you have to use Flurrie to blow the Punies across the gap, jump down and head to the right to find this Shine Sprite in a box.

In the room with the twisting path and the spider enemy blocking the way, there is a big black vase that Flurrie can blow away. Follow the path in airplane mode and you’ll wind up on a big box with a Shine Sprite.

Right after you get the Super Boots, perform a ground pound on the nearby panel. Jump across the platforms to find this Shine Sprite.

After draining the water into the lower section, head down and hop across the lily pads to find this Shine Sprite in a box.

Chapter 3 Shine Sprites

This Shine Sprite is hovering in plain sight. Reveal the hidden block underneath with your hammer and then hop up to claim it!

This Shine Sprite is in the second-floor storage room, which means you can only get it once you’ve obtained the Storage Key. Once you’re there, the Shine Sprite is in plain sight.

Rogueport Shine Sprite #1

You actually can’t get any Shine Sprites in Rogueport until the end of Chapter 3! The first one here is in east Rogueport on top of a red roof. Use Yoshi’s Flutter Jump at the east end of this screen and then hop up the crates. From here, you can use Flutter Jump again to land on a roof. Platform from roof to roof until you find this Shine Sprite above a red one.

Slip through the crack between houses in east Rogueport and then Flutter Jump over the water. The Shine Sprite is here above some boxes.

Slip through the grate in west Rogueport and Flutter Jump to the left across the gap. You’ll find the Shine Sprite right here.

Head to the sewers via the east Rogueport pipe and make your way down the pipe, down the stairs, and then into the room on the left. Destroy this block with the Super Hammer and then hop up to claim your Shine Sprite.

Chapter 4 Shine Sprites

After entering the second forest section of Twilight Trail, you will find this Shine Sprite hidden behind the tree as shown in the image. This is a tricky one!

Right after you enter the building, go into roll mode and enter the small hole in the wall. The Shine Sprite is inside.

Further along in the well, you’ll push a door frame up a slope and then hide in the shadows with Vivian to pass it. In the next room, the Shine Sprite is waiting for you next to a Save Block.

Rogueport Shine Sprite #3

Enter west Rogueport and then head inside the first house you see. On the second floor, you’ll find a hole in the right wall that you can get into with roll mode. The Shine Sprite is just outside.

After clearing Chapter 4, use roll mode to enter the chimney on the roof of a house in east Rogueport. Inside Admiral Bobbery’s house, enter the door and your Shine Sprite is right here!

Chapter 5 Shine Sprites

The first Shine Sprite in Keelhaul Key is in the mountainous area where you climb up ledges. The Shine Sprite is in plain sight, but you’ll need to use Yoshi’s Flutter Jump to get to it.

After crossing the bridge, take a close look at the tree and you’ll see this Shine Sprite hiding in the leaves.

Pirate Grotto Shine Sprite #1

Right when you land in the lower level with the fire enemies and the small sunken ship, jump onto the ship. Carefully tread north and you’ll find the Shine Sprite hidden here.

The next Shine Sprite is after the second Save Block. Head up the stairs and use Koops to reveal a hidden block next to the Shine Sprite. Jump on top and hit it with your hammer to claim it!

In the storage room with the red switch, use Koops’ shell to raise the platform while you’re standing on it. Then hop on the box to the left and wait for it to ascend. The Shine Sprite is in a box right here.

After exiting the room with the three flying Buzzy Beetles, there is a Shine Sprite to your right above the water. Use Koops to get it.

The last Shine Sprite in this area comes right after you use roll mode to weave through the rows of spikes. Hit the floor with your hammer to reveal a hidden block that will let you access this Shine Sprite.

In west Rogueport, head all the way to the left and blow up the cracked hall with Admiral Bobbery. The Shine Sprite is inside.

In the room that leads to Petal Meadows, enter boat form and float to the other side to find the Shine Sprite right here.

Note: There are a whopping three Shine Sprites available here, so we've grouped them all together.

Hop into the grate in west Rogueport. In the next room, go down the green pipe in the background and make your way west and down the stairs. You’ll see a small pipe in a little alcove by itself. Go in the alcove and walk left instead of taking the pipe. Use boat form to follow a path that leads you to a secret room with a three Shine Sprites and a Badge!

For the centermost Shine Sprite, hop on the center platform with Yoshi and then Flutter Jump toward the box. If you have trouble, you can come back later once you have the Ultra Boots.

Chapter 6 Shine Sprites

This Shine Sprite is in the room you appear in immediately after you gain control for the first time in the chapter. It’s off to the left behind a table.

In Cabin 008 is a child Bob-omb who wants the train engineer’s autograph as a birthday present. Give it to him and he will reward you with a Shine Sprite in exchange!

In the outdoor area, head past the Pokey and down the steps and you’ll find this Shine Sprite in a box on the floor.

Head back to the sewers’ city area and hop onto the platform that moves up and down. You’ll see a pole nearby – perform a Spring Jump to grab onto the pipe and then head right. Jump onto the platform and perform another Spring Jump to grab this Shine Sprite.

On Fahr Outpost’s second screen, go behind one of the big cedar trees and perform a jump to find this tricky Shine Sprite hiding behind it.

Head to the rightmost house next to the cannon. The Shine Sprite is in a box to the right of the house. Collect this Shine Sprite, and you’ve collected every single one in the game – congratulations!

As mentioned above, Shine Sprites are a collectible item that debuted in Super Mario Sunshine. In that game, they essentially replaced Stars.

In Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door, they serve a different purpose. These items hidden around the world and can be used as a means of upgrading your characters.

There are 42 Shine Sprites hidden throughout the world of TTYD. That is exactly enough of them to upgrade all of Mario’s partners two times each.
