I never got around to downloading the first game, largely due to hearing that is was very short for its price; is it important to get that one first, or should I just enjoy this "greatly improved" sequel on its own?

LostWinds 2 can easily stand on its own. But if you get it, you'll probably love it, and then you'll want to play the original so you'll probably end up getting both anyway. Thing is, after the playing the sequel, you might not enjoy the original as much. To get the maximum LW experience for your Nintendo Points, I recommend playing the original, then the sequel.
I liked the first one quite a bit. I do plan on getting this, but I only got 1000 Points left, and two games I want: This & Thorium Wars. Which one do you think I should get?
Played them both back to back this weekend, I owned Lost winds 1 since it was released so I didn't finish it... Kinda boring and no map or anything gave me a headache but WOW. The new one is so improved I would consider it the best wiiware game and one of the best wii games overall. So glad I took the plunge considering my hate for the first one...

Same here, bought the first one since people raved about it, but I didn't feel very strongly for the game. Hearing somebody like you said the second was so great is testament that I will probably finish LW1 finally, and pick up LW2.

@suburban_sensei Would love to hear ur opinion on both the first and second one when ur finished. You kinda have to play through the first game to truly appreciate the new instalment nevertheless the new one is bloody amazing.
I enjoyed the second one so much that I bought the first one after I finished it. The only part of the second one which I didn't enjoy was the final battle because I couldn't figure out how to nuke Riveren without looking for help. But it was 99% funtastic and 100% beautiful.
I just finished the game today and its a terrific game and I really enjoyed it but yes the figuring out how to beat the final boss was a little tough. Without a doubt this is worth 1,000 Wii points
LW1 was just an average platform game to me, but I loved LW2, only lasted 4 hours but it was worth every second, a huge improvement over the prequel, and one of the best looking games on the wii too, also the map is a big relief, no more wondering simply where to go to next, and getting lost like LW1.
