As a 90s kid, I've been tracking the European version of Sega Mega Drive Mini for years. Well, today, Sega Mega Drive Mini 2 was announced! I'm beyond excited! It will include Mega Drive and Mega CD games. Games confirmed so far:
Silpheed – Sega CD
Shining Force CD – Sega CD
Sonic The Hedgehog CD – Sega CD
Mansion Of Hidden Souls – Sega CD
Popful Mail – Sega CD
Virtua Racing – Mega Drive
Bonanza Bros. – Mega Drive
Shining In The Darkness – Mega Drive
Thunder Force 4 – Mega Drive
Magical Taruruto – Mega Drive
Fantasy Zone – new Mega Drive port
Will Mansion of Hidden Souls or Popful Mail make it to the west, given they both had localizations produced by third-party companies?
I can only imagine Magical Taruruto being replaced in the west by some western license game.
Shining Force CD would be impressive, since even if you were to buy the game on real hardware, it was one of the only games to require the RAM cartridge (the equivalent of an external memory card) to play the whole game (which almost nobody bought and has since become a collectable).
Really surprised if Bonanza Bros. wasn't on the first. Feels like one of the games Sega would repeatedly rerelease despite not well spoken of.
@KingMike Considering that not all games were announced but we know that there will over 50 titles, do you think that the final list will include all the original Mega Drive/Genesis Mini games? Every region had slightly different lists, though. I am curious to see if it will include Sonic the Hedgehog 3 & Knuckles. I pre-ordered Sonic Origins but still curious to see if they will include the MD roms (Sonic 1, 2, 3&K).
The Sega/Mega CD system allowed you to play the music tracks from the disc, sure would be nice if the Mini 2 carried that feature. Silpheed and Sonic CD had some bangers

No, those won't be carried forward and make the original useless. All appearances are that there won't be any duplicates. Japan can likely count on Sonic 1 being included, but only because the Japanese variant of the original Mini didn't include it.
The original got 42 games. This is confirmed as 50 games from back in the day (plus bonus games). We know 10 titles already (one of which is a bonus title) and M2 via social media has confirmed that 20 of the 50 will be CD releases (Of which 5 are in the first batch of 10 games announced). So that leaves only 26 more slots for the core 40 game lineup of the original Mini, making it a mathematical impossibility that the Mini 2 will include all the classic games from the original.
As for Sonic 3 & Knuckles, I'm of the opinion that it likely won't be present. It's a big selling point for Sonic Origins and I suspect Sega wants to keep it exclusive there. While some older digital versions have remained available until recent delistings (And thanks to backwards compatibility, the heavily smoothed XBLA release is playable even on the Xbox Series X), it hasn't left the vaults in years with a new release.
@Atariboy Everything that you wrote makes sense, thanks! I would like to get both Mega Drive Mini consoles, the European version, but I can't find the first one new for a reasonable price. The first Mega Drive is one of the coolest designs ever.
