Topic: Switch wired vs wireless speeds

I've always had my Switch wired in dock with a Nyko Connect from my Wii, which also spent some time on my Wii U. I updated my wireless router yesterday from an old 2.4ghz to dual this that whatever. Top-Line A7 Archer 1750. Seems like my wired is now maxing out at 40, used to be 32, and my wireless at 70.

So, anybody know if that's USB dock limited, Nyko adapter limited - it's USB 2.0 10/100- or has wifi just gotten that much better in the Switch, ie it can use 5ghz?

Thanks. Yes, I know I can just run whatever, just curious if anyone has any technical thoughts and Switch and dock hardware.

@rjejr The Switch can use 2.4ghz or 5G wifi. My router puts out both. I thought 2.4ghz seamed more steady through walls, so I've stuck with that.

@rjejr you got some serious Router issues going there. Get a better router I have multiple devices on my NetGear forgot the name but was a 2017 model (if I recall) and didn't update firmware as some where problem. And have no issue with 2.4/5g wifi connections with my Switch or other Devices. I think you got had on a bad hardware or poor QC router. Go and get a better one.

@SwitchForce Thanks, but I don't think it's the router. It's #7 on Tom Hardwares guide of top 10 routers in 2020.

I'm on a 100Mbps connection from my ISP, my PS4 gets about 80 wired. Haven't tested anything else yet. My cable modem is on the 2nd floor of my house where the cable wire comes in from the outside, I ran a 25' cat5 cable along the pipes down to the basement where the router is, so I expect some degradation from that run. But 40 seems a bit low, thought it could be the 13 year old USB 2.0 10/100 adapter slowing it down and whatever the dock does.

@WoomyNNYes Yeah, 5G is faster, but it hates distance and walls. I think it's the reason those repeaters are so popular, it's like good in 1 room only. My router has "smart blend" or some such, it only puts out 1 name for both signals and the receiving device is supposed to choose 2.4 or 5, and I wasn't sure if the Switch was smart enough to do that on it's own. The router is about 2' from the dock so I was thinking the 5ghz WiFi might be better than the old wired LAN. But Sakurai said "wired" for Smash, so my kid wants it wired.

@rjejr if your adaptor is that old and USB 2.0 I would think that's your problem. As you were thinking it is throttled by the bandwidth USB 2.0 can deliver. I don't think it would make any difference in real life performance though as I don't believe online play needs anywhere near 40mbps.

Waiting to be proved wrong by someone who knows much more about the subject!

@Mondos @SwitchForce Thanks for the feedback.

Just ran some more extensive tests. PS4 got 94 wired, then 69 wifi, then 104 wired again. Sony consoles have always done better than Nintendo in my basement.

Switch got 40 wired in the dock, 48 wifi in the dock, then 60 wireless sitting in my lap on the couch. Then 40 wired again back in the dock. Then wireless 48 again back in the dock. So I disconnected the adapter. It was plugged into a blue USB port, so 3.0, but the adapter is old so the 3.0 port ain't helping.

I do think it's strange the Switch sits on whole round numbers like 40 and 48 whereas I could probably test the PS4 30x and get a different speed every time. So I'm wondering if the Switch locks in a speed, or just it's built in tester locks in a speed. No web browser on the Switch so I can't check fast or speed test.

The Wii U web browser running fast.com wouldn't get above 14, but it was mostly lower. If for some reason I go back online on Wii U I'll plug the adapter back in.

Now I need my son to play some SSBU this weekend and see how the online holds up. I would think 40Mbps wireless in the dock should be more than enough. Though that's just raw speed, I haven't tested Ping or anything like that.
