Topic: ¿Why did Nintendo kill its Classic Virtual Console setup?

With the incoming impossoble to find SNES classics and next years re-release of the NES classic; Virtual Console is dead. I dont see this happeneing on Switch and a big major reason i play my WiiU a lot. I see Nintendo is making a really questionable business decision by not also having VC on Switch along with these overpriced rare classic systems. I'd happilly spend an upgrade fee for games already owned on my WiiU for Switch. But nintendo hates extra money and/or is just lazy to develop the VC for Switch.

Truly SAD!
So why did Nintendo kill the Virtual Console?

Imo they can sell their Nes / Snes first on "mini" versions, and then when they run out wait a while and sell them again on Switch VC, where the extra feature of having them on the go can make sense of double dipping.

The other way around I'm not sure it would work as well, and having both "mini" and "eshop" versions concurencing each other would make no sense. So I'm not sure it's a "poor business decision".

I'm still optimistic that VC will return in one form or another...

I'm kind of expecting an online focused Direct at some point in the next couple of months really pushing the benefits of Nintendo's new online subscription service - with a bit of information clearing up the uncertainty surrounding VC thrown in too...my gut feeling is that NES/SNES games may only come as a part of the Classic Game Selection - maybe some GBA/GBA (etc) games too - then games from the N64 era and beyond made purchasable (or re-downloadable for those who had purchased them on previous systems) via the Switch eShop (maybe under a rebranded VC?)

...but until we know for sure, I wouldn't rule anything in/out at this stage

Or that the Switch hasn't been released for a full year and Nintendo is trying to work out the kinks on the VC (longer than needed but still).....

Was Mariobro4. No, I'm not taking off my backpack...it's important.

My guess is that the VC will be accessible via online subscription. You will have all access to old games including up to N64 for a monthly charge of maybe 15 $/month, which also includes multiplayer for new games. Perhaps single purchases will also be available for offline users, but they don’t want to bum out users that bought games first and later argue they could have had them “for free.”

My best guess would be that the dawn of Switch VC will come with the paid online next year. They already announced games like Dr. Mario for the service so I think it's not outlandish for them to handle it like the eShop and add to it on a weekly basis.

I admit I'd be really bummed out if Switch wouldn't get VC simply because of those limited stock items. Would be the first time I actually cared for VC outside my favorite titles due to Switch's mobility.

Yeah, it makes sense to me that Nintendo would wait until after the "Mini"s come and go before giving us the VC on Switch. Not that this is what I want, I want the VC like 6 months ago, haha. But, they're adding a lot of games every week (18 this week!). It's definitely enough to keep me entertained while I wait

To give the 3rd party games - large and small - room to breathe before taking a lot of the oxygen out of the room by selling everyone their 5th copy of Mario 3.

There's been plenty of early indie (& some bigger 3rd party) successes on Switch - those make it easier to secure enthusiastic support from 3rd party publishers going forwards. VC could have trampled those success stories.

Plus it's possible that they simply have different plans as others have noted. Maybe the plan is to have a 'NESflix' where you subscribe and get access to everything while you subscribe? At the moment we don't know.

This is a very good point. Hadn't thought of that.

@Samus7Killer Dude. They said they will talk about it later. It's obviously tied to online somehow (I mean, online multiplayer for old games is pretty cool!) so I would expect something when online is official 'live'.

I never drive faster than I can see. Besides, it's all in the reflexes.

Theyll ride these classic systems out for the superfans and casuals to gobble up..
Thank the gods i can use VC on WiiU and even play Gamecube and other banned stuff via hacking.
Switch has lotsa lost potential!

@StuTwo I think Bethesda will be the next big 3rd party success story on Switch.

Yeah. Superfans and casuals. That's a really narrow focus...

There's a big disadvantage to the VC approach - a handful of big name games sell again and again but loads of good but lesser known or slighter games aren't viable. Bundling them together with others (as happens with the mini classics & would happen with a subscription service) makes a lot of sense. It's the only way that 2nd tier games stay in circulation.

@Grumblevolcano hopefully so.

Still 3 months left until the launch of Switch Online with the "Classic Game Selection". If you go to http://www.nintendo.com/switch/online-service/ you'll see some information about that near the bottom. I'm certainly hoping for a NESflix (as StuTwo put it) style service spanning several generations of consoles, but I wonder if they'd do that at the current price model ($3.99/month, $7.99/3 months, or $19.99/year). At that price point I can see NES, possibly SNES, but anything beyond that makes me wonder if they'd stick to the same prices. Maybe a tiered system? For instance, $3.99/mo for NES/SNES, $5.99/mo for the above + N64, $8.99/mo for the above + Gamecube?

Of course, it's all speculation, so I'll wait to see what Nintendo will reveal in time. Personally, I'd subscribe to a service with NES/SNES/N64/GameCube/Wii/Gameboy/GBA/DS and whatever other systems they could possibly fit in there (Sega maybe?). Oh well, I'll just keep dreaming sweetendo dreams for now

edit: I definitely want to know more about their online play.

I wouldn't particularly miss VC if it means people actually buy a wider variety of games instead.

Switch owners want VC.... but this website defends any idea thats against what Nintendo does.
Never change Nintendolife.... Never change...

NESFlix sound terrible.. same old NES games rehashed as well as SNES stuff. Gamecube needs to be utilized as well as N64 VC selections half arsed effort.

Nah. People say they want a thing and then are proven wrong when looking at the data. There is legit data on this, think the most well known example based on coffee preferences. Their preferences contradict what they say they want.
