Everything except Calladoody and sports has been selling poorly on XBO lately. Tomb Raider was dead on arrival and even Halo 5 underperformed. I'm not sure it would even be worth the cost of licensing and distribution for Square Enix to release Final Fantasy on XBO.
Earlier this year Type-0 HD had a sales split of around 5:1 in favour of PS4. By the time FF7R comes out, the number of people who like JRPGs but do not own a PS4 will be much smaller. Add to that timed exclusives and late ports almost never do well when eventually released on other consoles.
PC seems like the most logical place to go after PS4. Or it can join Scalebound in monstrous XBO JRPG bombs.
I'd say in terms of likeliness for a port, it would go
@kkslider5552000: My sentiments exactly, From what i understand it will be easy to port games to the NX, (unlike the Wii U) So if there is not some binding contract that prevents them from putting FF7 on the NX, I don't see why they would not want go make the money.
@GrailUK: I agree with you that it depends on how many NX's are in people's home. But when companies can mix IP's it does mean that some legal barriers have been crossed.
I'd say in terms of likeliness for a port, it would go
1. PC
2. NX
3. XBO
.
..
....
4. Vita
5. Wii U
Needless to say I disagree. I think it's something more along the lines of....
XBOne/PC - 90% (definitely capable of running it, just a handshake away)
NX if it's a home console - 50% (almost surely capable but hard to pin down timing etc)
PS3 - 40% (legacy hardware boosted by the fact that it's Sony)
Wii U - 30% (probably capable of running it, still on the market)
360 - 15% (probably capable of running it but legacy hardware, smaller disks and not Sony)
NX if it's a portable - 10% (probably won't be able to run it and hard to pin down timing etc)
Vita - <5% (probably won't be able to run it but boosted by the fact that it's Sony)
3DS - <1% (almost surely won't be able to run it)
and please don't obsess about what specific number I put for each one. I don't mean to be that specific it was just the best way I could think of to explain what I was trying to say.
@skywake: I am fairly certain the NX will play video games.
I didn't say it wouldn't. I said that depending on what it is getting FF7 could be possible or very unlikely. If it's a portable system or some kind of hybrid/micro-console then it might not have the storage required for any pre-rendered graphics they want to push. It might not have the horsepower to run the port as they intend. It's certainty going to be an entirely different architecture to the PS4/XBOne/PC and possibly Nintendo's next home console.
@kshixson: Fair point, but do not big it up to be something it isn't. It is not politics. Sony and Nintendo and Microsoft are COMPETITION NOT OPPOSITION. All three companies are not opposed to much
I never drive faster than I can see. Besides, it's all in the reflexes.
@skywake: I noticed New 3DS isn't on your list. Do you think it is more or less likely to be on New 3DS compared to just 3DS?
Because I consider the New 3DS to still be a 3DS. They're not going to start development unless they think they can release on the original 3DS. The only reason a game would be New 3DS exclusive is if they started with the intention of releasing on the 3DS but had trouble optimising. So New 3DS is only very, very barely more likely than the original 3DS. Still far less likely than an almost equally improbable Vita release IMO.
@Megas75:
They're also pretty inclusive about what does or doesn't get ported. Xbox and PS4 both got FF type 0, and are getting KH3 and FFXV,
but KH 2.8, and FFX/ X-2 are PS4 exclusives.
We don't know anything about release plans for World of Final Fantasy or FFVII, but I wouldn't put it past Square to make them Sony exclusives.
FF7 remake on Wii U would be absurdly unlikely. Square already confirmed that the reason KH3 and FF15 are not coming to Wii U is because the engine they are currently using to make those games are incompatible with it. I would not be surprised if the same engine is being used for the FF7 remake.
As for the NX, remember that Square announced Dragon Quest 11 will be coming to the NX? That alone raises a lot of potential for FF7 to be on the same console. Not a certainty, but it's likely Square is interested in supporting the NX.
