Excite Truck (Wii, 2006) and Excitebots: Trick Racing (Wii, 2009)

Developed by Monster Games (purchased by iRacing.com Motorsport Simulations), Excite Truck traded the traditional motorcycles of the Excitebike series for massive, over-the-top off-road vehicles. Players steered using the Wii Remote tilted horizontally, performing stunts in mid-air to line up perfect landings and trigger turbo boosts. The game's standout feature was the malleable terrain, which would physically morph in real time, allowing players to launch off ramps and crash through obstacles for points.

Do you think there is any chance of a Switch 2 version of Excite Truck or Excitebots: Trick Racing? The reason I ask is that the 9-axis gyroscopic control has probably progressed a lot since the original Nintendo Wii. Thank you.

I can't imagine it's very high up on Nintendo's list of priorities but I'd love to see it, I've heard good things about Excitebots but it never came out over here (apparently even in Japan it was only released as a Club Nintendo reward). Maybe they could throw in the Excitebike WiiWare game as well.

I own both games, and I liked Exite Truck more, perhaps because I played it more.

But it's a shame that Monster Games was acquired by another company that only makes driving simulation games exclusively for PC, and on top of that, they're completely online, which doesn't appeal to me at all. Even so, I don't know if the original development team is at iRacing or if they created a new one, but if Nintendo asks them to adapt the games for the Switch, they have to comply, or another group will do it.

My only pet peeve with Exite Truck was the Soundtrack. Good lord man was it god awful. Excitebots was more funky and opted for an almost late 90's styled quirky techno style. The Animal/Insect bots were a lot more interesting too than standard trucks.

BUT, i couldn't stand those lame swingable bars in each stage that made you come to a screetching hault, forcing you to use poorly implementaed motion controls that have you rotating/swinging your Wii Remote in circular motions. lol It's so abrupt and destroys whatever speed and momentum you had in check prior.

Excite Truck needs a new OST, and Excite Bots needs an option to remove the swingable bars! I haven't touched EB since 2009 when it released. That's just over 15 years. Woah. lol I put a lot of time into the single player campaine trying to unloack and nearly 5-star everything. It was like a 7.5/10 at best for me personally, for it's time. What sucked though, is that none of my friends were into gaming by that point, they had moved on from the hobbie, so i was just enjoying it solo. And as everybody knows, Racers are always at their best, including fighters obviously when you're playing against friends.

Here's what I'd like to see for both Excite Truck & Bots if they ever came to NS2

  • 4K
  • 120fps
  • True WideScreen - (On Wii, they were anamorphic, always looked sharper in 4:3 instead)
  • HD Rumble 2
  • 9-Axis Gyro motion steering
  • Online
  • Option to remove swingable bars in EB
  • New Soundtrack for ET

I think if they remade and sold Excitebots on Switch 2 and marketed correctly, it'd be the quickest a remake has outsold the original game maybe ever. :V

Unfortunately while I was one of the 8 people who bought it, and was excited because the Wii wheel showed with Mario Kart Wii that Excite Truck's control scheme could be something I could enjoy, or get into or be competent at, my Wii died the day after I first played Excitebots, and by the time it got fixed, I think I bought No More Heroes or something. So I just forgot about it and never went back to it despite the 7 other people who played it seemingly loved it.

The game controlled better without the Wii Wheel. Felt more intuitive, precise and less gimicky without plastic shell attached imo, especially when playing as smaller/lighter bots like the Bat. Can't remember if it ran at 30 or 60fps either. if it is clocked at 30fps, it's going to be really painful bouncing back. Highly doubt Nintendo will ever remaster that one at this point either. They're not exactly taking many risks with NS2, outside of releasing a VC replica for VB NSO. Which was pretty ballsy of them I'll admit.

I tried playing Excite Truck for hours and hours during the year between me buying a Wii and Mario Kart Wii coming out, I could not get into how it controlled at all. Whatever it is doing I was genuinely incapable of getting far into that game. Maybe the only time motion controls (that weren't obviously broken) completely failed me.

I obviously don't remember how much the Wii Wheel would've helped with the literal one time I played Excitebots 15+ years ago, but I can tell you I only played MK Wii with the wheel and it worked wonderfully for me.

Never got to play Excite Bots as it never released here, but Excite Truck was my jam in the first year of the Wii, and remains one of my favourite Wii games to this day. I’d love to see them get a rerelease.

@kkslider5552000 having tried Excite Truck modded to use traditional controls (i.e. an analog stick)…yeah, it’s even better than the original. I would hope a rerelease gives that as an option as it’s apparently pretty easy to map.

I'd love to see it, but this is not going to happen. Truck did okay, but Botz bombed hard. It sucks, I like both of them better than Mario Kart, but it the general public does not agree. We can't even get a real F-Zero from Nintendo, Excite has no chance.

Keep in mind, if you weren't playing Wii on a CRT you were getting hit with lag, and back in 2009, HDTV's were packed with it, easily exceeding 1 frame and into the higher 20ms-something range, especially if you went plasma. But on CRT? Zero. Instantaneous. You feel like you're one with the controller. Every single ms counts especially for motion controls. even just 1 frame of lag will make a notable difference as it did with the testing i did back in fourth with CRT's and multiple HDTV's i owned back in the day, two of which had 1 frame/16ms of lag via' component cables(One being a plasma and the other LED).

The 32" FullScreen Sony WEGA CRT i had was god-tier. No TV on the market especially back then could touch it's clear blur free motion clarity, which is night and day and truly makes you appreciate whatever it is you're playing and how these games were intended to always look in motion.

Input lag wise, even with 1 frame vs zero, i could feel the difference with Metroid Prime 3: Corruption, Klonoa, Super Monkey Ball, VC NES(etc) titles and so on. And yes, it hinders the fun. Klonoa's footing felt off the moment he jumped. It wasn't as light/instantaneous as it was on the CRT. Plus, CRT's were and still are god-tier in terms of motion clarity. No motion blur is the name of the game unlike the modern 4K TV's of today. OLED can't even touch CRT in that regard. The only way to get 'half way' there with QD-OLED/OLED is to run games at a locked 120fps, which removes 50% of the blur.

At least these days, most 4K TV's have around 10ms of latency in game mode, and then around 5ms in 120fps game mode. Once you hit 5ms, button response wise, it starts to feel like you're playing on a CRT.

Excite Truck is one of the games I’ve had the most fun playing multiplayer on Wii. At one point a few years ago a friend and I were up repeatedly until near 5am trying to beat the challenges. It seemed the more the one of us not playing insulted the one attempting the race, the better we did!

Naturally we were both our 40s and really should have had better things to do…
