So a lot of people are anticipating the next big Donkey Kong adventure, and a decent number of people hope that it'll be a proper 3D platformer, which the big hairy ape hasn't been in since '99. I personally think they'll be sticking to 2D for while, but should they decide to go all in on a 3D DK, how would it play? I know the obvious answer is "do DK64 but better," but I think there'd be more to it than that. Maybe you think so, too. That's why this thread exists, after all.

The main thing that really come to mind is "it plays like Mario Odyssey, but with a heavier character, rolling, barrel tossing and vine swinging (and obviously no Cappy)".

Supposedly the pitch Vicarious Visions was pitching for DK involved leveraging some of their work on the Tony Hawk games - not literally, but if I remember correctly, their prototype had DK grinding around and being able to readily flow through the environment. I think that sounds incredibly fun, even if it'd contrast with his movement in the Country games.
If we never see a realization of this idea (it's not off the table, since the pitch being shot down led to the founders of Vicarious leaving, establishing Velan Studios, and securing a Nintendo project as their first game, with a number of other VV employees migrating over as well), then I think the most likely outcome would be trying to strike a balance between the more sandbox 3D Marios and melee-oriented combat, akin to some of the abilities in Kirby and the Forgotten Land.

tbh, I would rather it be a 2D/3D mix like e.g. Super Mario 3D world. I feel like full 3D would make things like barrels and vine swings kind of annoying. But restricted 3D? Could be amazing.
