Some 12+ years ago, I used to play a game on my DS and I cannot remember it for the life of me. I’ll try my best to describe it and hopefully we can get an answer. [game would have been release between 2000-2012].
The game was composed of two-sides - the player vs., AI. In which, both teams would be given a base area, in which you were to defend from the opposition, but also ready an army for battle. Surrounding the base was fog and you could explore the map by sending your troops out - this would make the fog disappear and, thus, gave you more map exploration. You could find items which you could harvest for yourself to increase your currency. I don’t remember the currency for the game, whether it was gold or coins etc… as for the troops, they seemed to follow a mythical/medieval style. You would build a barracks and houses etc too. You had to harvest resources I believe.
The below illustration is to try and give you an idea if the game flow.

Anyway, if you’ve made it this far, I salute you because that is one long-winded and awful game description. I will be impressed if anyone gets it.
Fire Emblem and Advance Wars come to mind, but there could be other similar tactical RPG games that would meet your description. Another game in a similar vein was Battles of Prince of Persia, which incorporated the use of cards (with added effects), but I doubt that would be it.
I've searched around for other such games, and they may include:
Luminous Arc
Glory of Heracles
Golden Sun: Dark Dawn
Panzer Tactics DS
Elite Forces Unit 77
Good luck.
"Gee, that's really persuasive. Do you have any actual points to make other than to essentially say 'me Tarzan, physical bad, digital good'?"
Firstly, thank you for taking the time to give my question a read over and a response!
Unfortunately, after some Googling and image searching, none of your aforementioned duggestions are the pearl I am after. However, I really appreciate your help.
The game does not consist of characters with such cartoon-style. I understand my description might have led you there and I apologise. The characters were much more boxy… following along the lines of a LEGO-like design. Furthermore, the POV was third-person and from an aerial perspective- almost looking down on to the battlefield.
@CLR798 : No worries at all. Unfortunately, nothing that matches your description comes to mind, but I hope that somebody else here will be able to help you with your search.

It sounds like an RTS to me. It could be Lego Battles or its Lego Ninjago sequel, they don't perfectly fit your description but they're from an aerial perspective with fog of war, they involve gathering resources and building up your troops and of course they have Lego-like graphics. If it's not one of them, try looking up other Real-Time Strategy games on DS and see if any ring a bell.
What you're describing sounds pretty identical to Starcraft, but that's never been on the DS. The best Starcraft-like games on the DS I could find were:
Civilization Revolution
Age of Empires DS
Anno 1701
Anno 1404
Lock's Quest

All of the above plus maybe the Settlers? OP, if the game isn't in this list then I have no idea what it could be.
Hang on to your youthful enthusiasms - you'll be able to use them better when you're older.
