First of all, sorry if there is another post for these kind of questions. I did look but couldn't find one.

My problem is that my son has a wii u version wup-001(03) 8gb and we desperately need more memory for it. I bought an external hard drive for it and it installed fine, formatted properly and showed up in the settings. But when he tried to play one of his games I just kept getting this message

'The usb storage device has been disconnected. Press and hold the power button for at least 4 seconds to turn off the console, then make sure the device is connected properly. If the problem persists, the usb storage device may not be receiving enough power. Please use an ac adapter or a usb y cable, as applicable. Error code 160-2713'

Being an absolute technophobe I have no idea what this means. The shop I bought the hard drive from said that my wii u version is not compatible with any external hard drives! Surely this must be wrong.

Any advice will be most welcome.

Can you give us your external hard drive name and how it is powered?

Making promise is easy. The hard part is keeping it.

i took it back and got a refund when he said it wouldn't work so I can't remember the name of it. It was powered by a usb that plugged into the wii u console

Just get a flash drive, I have a 128 gb flash drive plugged into my Wii U and it works perfectly

What Skywake said, if you're using a USB drive it needs its own power: either a y-cable (if USB3 you'll have to get this online from someplace like Amazon) or a powered USB Hub - make sure it says it powers portable hard drives.

A high grade flash drive, not any of those store brand types. The higher the read/write cycles and transfer rates the better.(usually)

The best ones to get are ones that come with their own plug to the wall. These are still sold and are just regular external drives rather than "portable" ones.

The Y cable solution doesn't always work. My hard drive still throws similar error messages randomly with a Y cable.

An externally powered drive is your best bet, one that plugs in to the wall.

Hi. I found solution that helped me, i dont know if it will help you. 1)Turn off wii u (i even unpluged the power cord) after that plug in your hdd, then plug the power cord back and turn the console on. After that i even went to power settings and disabled "Auto Power-Down" (i dont think that this was the problem, but..). After you did all that try to launch the game wich is on hdd... it worked for me. I think the problem is when the system is powered and you plug in a new hardware it actually doesnt regognize it though it sees it.

Edit: Then again error showed after playing a game for 20 minutes.... so the problem is elsewhere

So I have a quaestion and I don't think a new topic is really needed.

I have a Wii U external HDD that works great. If I buy a new one can I copy paste my digital games from the old to the new one via my PC that it will be faster? I am sure that on 3DS it works if you upgrade your SD card...
