I believe the whole "protect your childhood saves" excuse is BS. I don't think the hardware ever had the ability to write to the cartridge. It is probably read-only to save on costs.
Also that excuse doesn't hold water, because if the retron could write saves back to the cart, couldn't we just try writing to the cart again if it screws up? The retron is keeping a backup of the save files after all!
Also, I think it is more disruptive that your save files get deleted if you update the firmware of the retron!!
