Way back in the '90s, you couldn't move for 2D fighting games from the likes of Capcom, SNK and Data East. The genre was one of the biggest draws around, and while one-on-one fighting games have enjoyed something of a fall and rise since then, they're not quite at the insane level of popularity they were during the 16 and 32-bit eras.
Still, if you're pining for some classic 2D fighting action in 2022, then you might want to take a look at FightNJokes, which has just arrived on the Switch eShop. It's described as "a semi-humorous 2D fighting game created from original IP while taking a gentle poke at the more serious sides of Fighting Games".
You might be assuming this is another Clayfighter, but the developers assure us that while it may not take itself too seriously, "there is a real solid, fun combat and fighting experience here".
Here's some PR:
We want to give the players even more flexibility and variety, there are a core set of moves in Fight’n’Jokes. Punch, kick, block, but each player has their own unique spin on these standard moves. Animations are different per player, audio feedback and visual results are different for each opponent.

Not sure how Capcom will feel about Arthur 0
I can spot references to existing characters everywhere, but this does look fun and that is surely part of that fun!
Hmm, so Waku Waku 7, then? That game is great, and still looks and sounds fantastic.
I'm surprised at how well animated this looks.
mmmeeehhhhhh. the "joke" aspects don't look funny to me. looks well built though??
All sorts of games referenced here especially the SFA2 intro, the Mortal Kombat background, the Sagat impersonator etc etc. Looks like Ranma 1/2, Darkstalkers and Pocket Fighter were big influences too.
Hope this reviews well, as 18 quid is a little high for an impulse purchase.
Looks interesting. Review it, please! To the wishlist waiting for the inevitable price drop, no rush here.
@Lord it’s just a guy in a suit of armour!
Looks and sounds great! Let's wait for some early impressions.
I love the pixelated 90s graphic style reminiscent of games and cartoons of that period, skilfully blended!
Plus the fluidity of the game (expertly programmed) is fantastic!
Not to mention the really curated audio part of the game.
So what to say more ... a real gem for retro gamers!
Hopefully we get a review soon. Was intrigued when I saw it on the eShop but like @HamatoYoshi said $20 is a little steep for an impulse buy.
On Twitter there's a rumor that devs are adding network rollback as we speak. That would be awesome!
Does not even mention online play. If this ships with no online play it is DOA.
@Portablexombie_V3 local multiplayer exists for a reason
Looked up that game and it was indeed first released on windows DOS back in 1997. Great for someone wanting to bring the project to modern platforms.
@Portablexombie_V3 Network Rollback is Online play, and apparently it's coming with an update
Just noticed it and added to the wishlist last night. The title and cover art are so bad that I HAD to take a look and was very surprised at how good it actually looks in motion.
Looks fun and I am a sucker for anything even half decent in this genre, so.....
Oh yeah this game feels so much like a kusoge fighter, and that's a good thing. Sajam just gonna end up having more clips for Will It Kill now! Definitely gonna check this one out
This looks like it was built on the M.U.G.E.N. PC fighting game engine, but not sure it it is allowed to be used commercially.
looks promising, definitely has that authentic 90s look.
I do rather appreciate all the 90s fighting games made available on Switch. I only really got into the genre right when arcades started disappearing, and for the longest time I only had nintendo systems, so a lot of these games were inaccessible to me. I'd sit drooling at screenshots of Samurai Shodown and the like. It would definitely blow the mind of my early 2000s era self that one day I'd have a huge library of arcade fighting games on a portable system.
I really want this to be good. Looks like a lot of fun.
@Jokerwolf I think the engine is proprietary and the coder did it from scratch himself since at the time M.U.G.E.N. wasn't yet available. In fact, FNJ was done across 1995/1997. According to Wikipedia, M.U.G.E.N. first release happened in July 1999.
@somebread so does online.
@Babadook You need that when the game is launched though. Even if you have a great game and release online later it rarely builds a decent community. I am looking at you Grid.
Reminds me of Waku Waku 7 and Pocket Fighter. May pick this up during a sale at some point.
@frankeenow i guess it goes beyond looking like a 90's fighter then, huh. surprised that isn't mentioned here
@Portablexombie_V3 I believe that in the 90's there were no online fighting games. I am already impressed that this game was ported and feels like a real arcade game from that decade...
and if gets rollback, it would be an uppercut to the other games from 90's which have no online gameplay! A clash between modern and old games
@Babadook Welcome to the now. We are no longer in the 90s. You can also play most of those 90s fighters online today. So they are in fact uppercutting this game. You are on to something. I wish this was an arcade game. Arcades are something that online has not been able to recreate for me.
