Sega of America has announced the appointment of Ian Curran as the company's new Chief Operating Officer (COO) and President, effective from today.
In this new role, Curran will be responsible for "utilising all resources available to maximise the profitability of the publishing and Sonic business units within the Americas and EMEA, serving also on the board of Atlus U.S.A., Inc". He'll be working alongside the current CEO of Sega West, Tatsuyuki Miyazaki, and will also work with employees in Sega's offices located in Irvine, Burbank, and London.
Talking about his new role, Curran has issued the following statement:
"My thanks and gratitude to Mr. Miyazaki and the entire company leadership for this opportunity to lead our operations and executions in the Americas and EMEA. I appreciate all of the incredible efforts Mr. Hiraoka has made to lay the groundwork for our operations in the Americas. Coming off the success of Persona 5, Sonic Forces, Sonic Mania Plus, and the Yakuza series, and with so much more on the horizon, including Valkyria Chronicles 4, it is an incredible time to join the team. As part of the SEGA family, we are inheritors of an expansive body of work and opportunity which I plan to help reach its full potential."
Curran has decades of experience in the video game publishing world with previous roles at companies like THQ and Acclaim, most recently working at Gioteck, a gaming accessories designer and supplier. It'll be interesting to see if this new appointment has much of an impact on Sega's current operations, and how quickly any changes might take effect. Hopefully Sonic and co are in good hands!

Can we get some new management down at Capcom Europe while we are at it?
Unless this means more Miku... I don't see how this matters...
Skies of Arcadia 2 confirmed!!!
Streets of Rage 4 is happening now. I wish.
Part of me really wishes Sega would one day re-enter the world of hardware. No gimmicks, unneeded extras, etc., just an awesome console to provide some friendly competition with the Big N.
Or, at the very least, increase their creative output of games for Nintendo consoles. Sega has so many great titles they could revisit, or even create some new IP.
Panzer Dragoon Saga SEGA AGES.
Make it happen, Mr. Curran.
Sonic Forces was a success?
I read this and wish there was some acknowledgment of Sega’s vast array of IP from its console days. I mean, they are sitting on a treasure trove of fantastic properties that, in the right hands, could produce some amazing titles. It’s like a level of being purposely ignorant that boggles my mind. And I get game developing isn’t easy and there’s a ton of factors behind it. But is it too much to ask to take a break from Sonic and maybe give a new Panzer Dragoon a try? A new Jet Grind Radio? How about reviving Burning Rangers?
Good bye Reggie!
Took long enough!
Dammit. I could have sworn it said Nintendo of America on the front page.
@NintendoFan4Lyf Was going to say, I don't know how helpful keeping THQ and Acclaim on your resume is, Ian. Won't hold it against you, though! 😂
@RupeeClock I liked it......I got it for $25 on Black Friday though.
@RupeeClock It sold well, so yeah, kinda.
@RupeeClock That's what I thought!
Ditch AT Games and make your own SEGA mini!
New leadership? This could end up being pretty decent, if they play their cards right.
A good start would be to not ignore their other series, most notably giving the NiGHTS fans a new game! Also, before anyone says anything, hey, a guy can dream. It would be so cool to have on the Switch, actually...
Also:
>Being this proud to mention Sonic Forces
LOL get outta here. That game was hardly a success by ANY measure. It's the 2017 version of Sonic '06 and should be erased from existence.
They should've appointed Nintendo as their president.
Isn't Sega, like Konami infamously tied to the Yakuza (I mean they didn't have all that insight for the series from nowhere....) we can guess who really calls the shots. Figuratively and literally.
Immediately signs off on a 3D Sonic toys-to-life battle royale with lootboxes
@sikthvash If only.
Good luck to him. I doubt this changes much about SEGA on any level, but willing to be proven wrong
How does one measure success. Is it being able to carry on while those around you falter? Is it finding strength where most see weakness? Or is it releasing Super Monkeyball 1 and 2 on the Nintendo Switch when those before you have neglected to?*
(*It's the last one.)
Can we have Phantasy star in the West now, please? Thanks.
Hopefully he will look at what made Sega really popular at one time the ips that Sega are sitting on are ridiculous shinobi ,outrun, golden axe,streets of rage, afterburner the list goes on pls Sega have a long look at yourself and give people what they want they could be such a good partner for Nintendo make it happen someone
@sikthvash
Phantasy Star Quadrilogy Remastered is guaranteed at this point
Good luck!
How mush really impact does Sega of America really have anymore? It's not like the old days, isn't Sega really just a publisher at this point?
Mario x Sonic platformer.
Do it, Mr. Curran. I'm sure Reggie and Furukawa-san would happily sign off on it... done properly.
Was Sonic Forces an actual success or just marketing talk?
@OctoInk20
>the 2018 version of sonic 06
it didn't even come out this year, so
@Jawessome
financially, yeah it did alright. a few vocal fans doesn't equal total failure
