I played the demo on Steam, so I'm in the full game there now, @JaxonH .... Save date definitely transferred there & I'm sure it will do on Switch

Beautiful.

I’m really starting to get into the game. Played the first two on Vita, but only for a few hours each. Started this one on PS4, then stopped playing when it was announced for Switch.

Wanna buy on STEAM too, just for posterity, but with C19 cutting my overtime I can’t afford any duplicate purchases like that. I’m already purchasing twice on Switch- digital and collector edition (not to mention PS4, goodness).

Well, it'll stay available on Steam, @JaxonH .... Will also go in sales sooner or later there, too!

Ya. I’m just wishlisting everything I buy on switch, then grab it in a deep sale.

I typically uninstall any game on steam I own on Switch that’s not a huge graphical disparity, just because, why take up precious SSD space for a game I can play on Switch and have TV play and handheld play (but still like owning just because PC games more more trustworthy as a permanent library). But for games that have a significant graphical advantage or, need gyro and don’t have it in the Switch version (which is few, thankfully), I do install those (Witcher 3, DOOM, etc).

Gonna have to wait til June to play though. That sucks. I want to play now but I want to play it on Switch.

Finished the demo.

I'm sold. Sold sold sold sold sold.

I want to keep playing so much, but despite having the game on other platforms, I'm going to hold off for the proper Switch release. This is a game I want to play on the TV and on handheld (which, that's the case for pretty much every game, but JRPGs in particular).

Demo is fantastic. Did its job. I'm sucked in and was thoroughly depressed when the demo ended

I pre-ordered the Switch physical of it last year, too, @JaxonH .... I'll replay it at some point on there, as well

While I accept that Cold Steel 3 is going to be a much richer experience for those who have been immersed in the series since Trails in the Sky FC, I'm calling out the completist, elitist nonsense. Insisting people must have played the Crossbell saga is going too far, at the very least! That is unless a) you are a fluent Japanese reader; or b) you are happy to install a fan translation patch.

(That said, I'll probably be playing Trails in the Sky SC on PSP by the time this comes out, as I played FC for the first time just last summer.)

Anybody know if demo progress continues through to the full game?

@BruceCM that is absolutely stunning news

Just finished the demo and have to say I was blown away, and I say this as a complete newcomer to the series. This very quickly became a Day One buy.

@scoobdoo Nice! I am kind of curious to see how people who jump into the series with ToCS 3 handle it. If they can keep up with all the characters and locations and such. That's awesome that the demo (which is the first 2 or so hours of the base game) was enough to sell you on the game and the series.

@Krull I've played them all and been waiting on Cold Steel 3 for ages, and I totally agree with you. The more people getting into the series the better I think, and if Cold Steel 3 is their starting point, so be it. I guess I can kinda understand the elitists though, I assume they think that people might jump in here, not get what makes the series so special due to events etc. not having as much of an impact, then drop it cold. They really just want the series to do well so that we get more games, so I guess I can kinda see where they are coming from.

From my experience though, you definitely do not need to start with Sky FC. I'd say Cold Steel 1 would probably be the best place to start with (due to the Sky arc being pretty oldschool with a slow start... it's a harder sell for newcomers).

The series works fine if you jump into a later arc because the chances are you will want to go back and see what was happening to piece it all together anyway (that world building is pretty special!) Overall, it's set up pretty well, where nothing in the older arcs really gets spoiled, you just get a bigger perspective on the overall story (the arcs all have their own set of new characters which are like blank slates who are learning of the overall plot and where they fit.)

I haven't played Cold Steel 3 yet, but from what I can tell it seems to be sort of it's own arc (with CS4), though having a fair few connections with (CS 1 and 2 ... but with 4 apparently stitching everything back to Sky FC together). Besides Rean (and Altina I guess), the main characters are all new and will probably be those blank slates... So I say go for it! CS 1 and 2 was mostly about OG class Vii and most of that got tied up sorta nicely anyway.

If it helps, this was the way I went through the series.

Sky 1 and about a quarter of 2 (years ago and not paying much attention to it)

a few years later CS1 (having no idea it was the same series at first) Loved it. Then while waiting for 2.

Zero no Kiseki (4th game) - rough fan translation (totally fine).

Sky 1, 2 and 3

Cold Steel 2

Ao no Kiseki (5th game) - rough fan translation (totally fine)

So I went 1, 6, 4, 1, 2, 3, 7, 5 lol.

Overall, I say if you're keen on playing CS3 and haven't played the others, give it a go. Chances are, you will want to go back and play them anyway. Switch is the perfect platform for it too, so let's hope Xseed dosen't keep us hanging as they own the rights to the older games.

Only suggestion I've got, which i'd like to add is. Play CS2 (7) before Ao (5). Ao does kinda spoil a pretty major mystery that is ongoing throughout CS2. I prefer it that way, others will disagree. But trust me... C-Chakra has your back on that one! (Sometimes it pays off not to play them in order)

Anyways, have a great weekend all! Apoligies if I came across as a bit of fan (no fan of fandoms generally) and if i've repeated thing others have said.... And... don't listen to elitists.

@scoobdoo Nice! I've got the demo loaded up but think i'm going to hold off until the full game is released. Awesome to see you're diggin it.

@C-Chakra That was actually a great reply - thanks for that! Unfortunately, while I’ve got a PSP and a Switch, I don’t have anything that will run Cold Steel 1&2. Not even my PC is up to the job. I happen to have Trails in the Sky SC on PSP, as I got it along with FC last year, which is why I’ll probably tackle that one next. And there are, I think, means of playing Third Chapter, Zero and Ao with translation patches on PSP, though I’ve not looked into it.

So I’ll probably end up going 1, 2, 8, then either back to 4 (I’ll skip 3) or on to 9 - which will probably be out on Switch by the time I’m done with SC and CS3!

@scoobdoo
Exactly my thoughts, so that’s at least two people here now that are newcomers to the series who are totally sold on Trails of Cold Steel III 😁

@C-Chakra
Great response.

If there wasn’t a story summary I’d definitely not be as into it, and would probably be wondering what the bigger plot is. But that story summary really was crucial in helping me enjoy the demo. And while I can certainly appreciate that someone who has fully played the previous games likely got more out of it than I did, I got more than enough.

This demo is just excellent. But it does require one take the time to catch up on the story summary. So as long as a person is willing to do that chances are very high they’re going to come out of this demo as excited as I am.

And now we have the 4th game coming too! Which also helps with my excitement because now I know I can at least finish the saga on the Switch.

I’m interested in giving this series a go.

It seems overwhelming how far back people recommend you to start to get the most out of it. I’m planning to start with Trails Of Cold Steel 1 for the Vita, and if I like it go from there.

If it arrives on time I’m going to try and play it next before XC DE comes out if I can.

I'm also a demo convert. RPG fan and not sure why but never got into the series. The demo did it - I'm in. I don't have time to play all 9 games - so I'm going to read recaps and watch some youtube videos to try and get as much of the backstory as possible - but I do know I'm giving stuff up, but that's ok with me.

I’m rubbish at haggling on Ebay as once I decide I want something, I’m determined.

I found a cheap copy of the first game and made an offer. After no reply I paid full price. I then got a refund no explanation this morning. I ended up buying the next cheapest that cost me another tenner, but at least it comes with an art book!

@JoeDiddley
Ya I think people get carried away with all their recommendations, as if most people are going to play half a dozen games just to have a full understanding of every single prior event. I can appreciate long-time fans’ enthusiasm in wanting others to experience everything in its fullness like they have... but they have to understand that most don’t have the patience nor the interest to put in that kind of work just to get an extra 10% of enjoyment out of a game that can be sufficiently enjoyed as it is. But if you have the time and determination to play the previous games I’m sure it’ll be worthwhile for you.

Btw, for eBay, I always just do Buy It Now. Never mess with sending offers unless it specifically accepts offers, in which case most do not accept right away because they want to wait and see if they sell at a higher price. So it’s usually not worth going down that route unless you have time and patience for it.

@mack73
Right on! The story summary in the main menu of the demo/game does it best, I think. Gets right to the point and crams it all into a 15 min explanation per game, so half hour for both. But YouTube videos to supplement would definitely enrich your understanding, I think.

It’s time to get the hype train up to speed. We’re nearly one week away from launch! Week from Tuesday, to be exact. Gotta pick up the pace with Xenoblade. I’m only level 41 and have 9 days to wrap it up!
