Not too long ago, Falcom recently talked about porting the series to modern platforms (perhaps with a physical release too, hopefully). Currently in the west, it is only on Steam. I think I would be a great entry point for someone like myself who doesn't play on PC. Almost all of the JRPG crowd is playing on Switch too.

Do you think this will happen? And, is there anyway for us to show NIS our support for a collection?

@imadeanaccount The best way to show NIS that there is demand for the old PSP Trails games on switch is to buy the 2 that already out. I would start with Trails from Zero

I started with Zero because it was on Switch. Waited for the sky games but I gave up so I started playing them on Steam. 0 regrets.

Trails in the Sky is being handled by XSeed in the West, so it's unlikely that NISA can do anything about that. XSeed has said that they don't do console ports, because they lack the necessary staff. And even if Falcom decided to release the Sky trilogy in Japan for the Switch, there is still no guarantee that it would be released here, if Trails of Cold Steel 1+2 were anything to go by (both released in Japan for the Switch in 2021, and XSeed has not even commented on whether they would bring them here).

@Dimjimmer Honestly depends on if XSeed's contract for publishing rights has expired or not. More often than not there is an expiry date on publishing rights, depends on the contract though.

@WiiWareWave
The games are still being sold and supported by XSeed in various platforms, so that would be a negative for the time being.

@Nidorom I thinking of starting with Zero or Daybreak, but so many Trails fans seemed to have told me I shouldn't do that. I can't tell if they're just megafans and say the most tiny minute detail might not make sense. I've heard people say you need to play Cold Steel 2's New Game Plus to understand Cold Steel 3. Did you understand Zero?

You can start with Zero and then Azure and be fine, there are some characters that will show up from trails in the sky and you'll enjoy that part more if you played the sky games first, but other than that it's very standalone in my opinion. Can't speak for cold Steel's new game+ as i haven't got to that series yet. But you definitely shouldn't start with Daybreak.

People often think the order they’ve experience something is the right order.
Both an unexpected plot twist and recognising something you’ve seen from an earlier game from a different perspective are cool. So it doesn’t really matter which game you get the surprise in and which you have deep understanding of both enjoyable and they work both ways round.

I've wanted to get into this series as well and am gradually stockpiling the games. On Switch when I can (Currently 5), but I've conceded that I'll have to play Trails In The Sky FC/SC/the 3rd on Steam. I was gifted FC on there anyway. Not sure what I'll do about Cold Steel I/II yet, but my guess is I'll have a better PC by the time I can start dreaming about those. Or XSEED will finally lose the rights.

The most common advice I've seen is to play them in release order. However, from the outside looking in, the barrier of entry is overwhelming and only increases with each new release. I've heard it's best to take them an arc at a time; if you bounce off the Sky Trilogy, move to the Crossbell Duology or the Cold Steel/Erebonia arc. That sort of thing. At the very least, it isn't nearly as overwhelming.

Trails in the Sky FC remake is going to be absolutely stunning on an OLED screen.

Will be nice having these on consoles in remade form, since Marvelous is just going to squat on the Western distribution rights for the originals indefinitely.

Ugh. Men.

Trails in the Sky preorders going live even though Lunar isn't getting a preorder?

Just weird.

Switch Physical Collection - 1,529 games (as of November 20th, 2025)

Tyranexx

@JaxonH It looks absolutely stunning! I'd be on board to pick up the remake for sure.

Nice to see you still around by the way. It's been awhile.

I can’t wait for this one to release. I have the OG on my Vita and it plays great, but a remake is definitely needed. Maybe we will get the entire trilogy.

Probably everyone here already finished 1st chapter by now... I was never very fond of the game, specially because the English voice acting is quite over the top (specially Estelle) but that ending though... Easily one of my favourites ever!!!
