Splatoon 3 channels all sorts of young and hip themes, but it seems the third entry has also taken some inspiration from a number of popular movie series from around the 1980s. Warning: potential spoilers ahead!
As noticed by a number of Inklings and Octolings across multiple social media platforms, the latest outing has some items and rewards that seemingly pay tribute to movies like Back to the Future, Star Wars and perhaps even Ghostbusters.
Apart from Marty McFly's visor and the Doc's glasses, it seems Splatoon 3 may also have a reference to the 'Keymaster helmet' from Ghostbusters (known in-game as the Brain Strainer) and the Rebel pilot helmets featured in Star Wars (known as the "Astro helmet" in-game). Below are some more images of this Grizzco gear:

I’m all for Back To The Future references, my favourite films 😁
I knew I had seen that hat somewhere before, and that’s why it was getting back to the future vibes, I love it!
Turf Wars: The Rise of Splatoon 3
I’d like to have those
I thought the shape was pretty similar to Bret "Hitman" Hart's sunglasses. The color is definitely more like Doc's though.
Ok, now I need to get this game
C&D in.......3.....2......1.....
(Jk)
These fashion items are soooo 2015...
This is heavy.
and now Nintendo? you are always acussing everyone about copyrights, explain it for us..
@Roger_Brazil The hat and glasses from BTTF aren't copyrighted.
@Largren After watching those films, I would love to get a DeLorean now. In fact, one of the few DeLorean dealerships in existence is located about 20-30 minutes away from my house!
@AstroTheGamosian Oh wow, that’s life goals. You’ve got to take advantage of that!
Back to the Future is a Trilogy I never get bored of and everytime I watch it it makes me laugh and I've watched it a LOT.
Reading the headline I was like 'I mean maybe?', but after seeing the last two rewards back to back....yep, that is absolutely a reference. I love Back to the Future myself (though have never gotten around to Pt 3 funnily enough) so this pleases me greatly. All we'd need to fully solidify this is a lab coat and a red sleeveless jacket and we're good to go.
Kept thinking eh, this may be stretching it. But after really looking at the gear, yeah. This does definitely look like some references which is really nice to see.
Damn I missed the cap, just haven't had time to play it
@AstroTheGamosian treat yourself mate
Rebel Pilot helmets are from the 70’s.
@Largren I'd also love to get a 1977 Pontiac Firebird Trans-Am (from Smokey and the Bandit), and a 2007 concept car by Nissan called the Pivo 2. Also the Bluesmobile from The Blues Brothers.
@Sequel Well, right now, the goal is to get the student debt paid off. We'll see if the courts uphold the forgiveness plan that President Biden announced. If they do, I stand to have a third of my debt forgiven.
But I do need to upgrade some electronics, as well. My MacBook Pro is over 12 years old at this point and basically on life support. My iPhone 8, bought four years ago, fares a bit better, but even it is also beginning to show signs of age.
Besides, I need to start looking for a place to live. While my parents won't charge me an arm and a leg for rent, compared to other places, they drive me nuts. So getting my dream car(s) is way down on the list of fiscal priorities at the moment.
@Sequel You can still get the cap, it appears randomly inside the capsules you get, I have no idea how rare it is though but I've gotten 2 (I think) so far. Only problem is they only seem to have 1 to 2 ability slots, so you'd have to upgrade it to get a third.
There's only one logical explanation: The Story DLC will involve Time Travel! Players will live through the Great Turf Wars, meeting young versions of Captain Cuttlefish and DJ Octavio, both in their prime!
I thought these were well known. Like the zapper
@Tourtus Good news. Thank you
Splat to the Future II. Nintendo's back at it with the pop culture references.
@DarkTone
The Zapper was very obvious because they were Nintendo products. Having pop culture references to non-Nintendo products isn't to be expected.
I was playing this the other day, and was humming the power of love, now I know why.
@mauhlin12 same. I remember Bret sometime wearing silver shades like that but I’d say it is more if a back to the future reference.

@AstroTheGamosian Just to warn you, DeLoreans are an absolute pain to maintain, which is mainly why they went out of fashion so quickly. The original movie even pays reference to this with how it shut down on Marty on multiple occasions.
@BulbasaurusRex I probably wouldn't drive it, then. I'd just keep it in a giant garage, like Jay Leno, and have it as a show piece. But that's assuming I get as rich as Jay Leno.
