Hi! I just started playing Wind Waker and for the life of me, I CANNOT get the sword at the very beginning of the game! I've spent almost a week of playing in that training room, doing EXACTLY what the old guy says to do. I've been careful not to touch buttons, unless he's telling me to, but I can't get the sword. I've found very little online for help, seeing as most people get it right away. Please help!
@MemeMarie It would help if you could be more specific about which part of the process you can't do. The game tells you the button presses required to pull off each move, you just have to repeat them a few times. My daughter managed to do it when she was 6, so I'm sure we can get you through it too if you tell us where to start.
You guys had me at blood and semen.
What better way to celebrate than firing something out of the pipe?
I'm unsure what else to say. That's great that your six year old can do it (I don't mean to sound sarcastic), everyone I know who plays the game has done it, too. I have been playing Zelda games since 1987, so I've got a bit of experience with them. But... I have done exactly what the guy asks, I could copy the moves in my sleep and he just WON'T give me the sword. I'm not touching extra buttons, I'm doing EXACTLY what he asks. After three nights of this mounting frustration, my husband (who has played the game start to finish) tried it for me. He can't get it either! He says he didn't have this problem when he played, that the guy gave him the sword without issue.
After looking online, I found this, which seems to be the exact thing I'm saying:
I took the advice from article, but the guy still WILL NOT give me a sword. Basically, I'm almost over wanting to play the game, since the sword is at the beginning and it's the first simple thing you're supposed to do and no matter what I do, I can't get it.
@MemeMarie If it's a glitch, you could try starting a new game. It only takes around 15 minutes to get to the part where you're stuck. I've never heard of glitch during that part, so I'm afraid I won't be of much help if that's the reason.

MemeMarie @Octane
Thanks, yes I've watched and followed this video from the other night. The game will not give me a sword, bc it acts like I'm NOT doing what he says, basically the old man knocks me back, or else if I do happen to get thru it, he says he's sorry but can't give me the sword.
@Octane
Thanks, but we tried that, too. (insert smiley shrugging shoulders in distress).
In fact, I've got different miis and different games under each trying to figure out wth is going on. I just can't imagine and I'm at my wits end. It's beyond frustrating. We've tried different controllers, even. But, after looking online, at least I see that I'm not the only one. There are a few articles saying the same thing as I am.
@MemeMarie I'm sure you've already tried this, but just in case, make sure to not move around when you want to do a horizontal slash. If you move towards Orca while pressing B, you will perform a stab attack.
If you're legit doing the correct inputs, and not moving the stick while swinging your sword, then there's only 3 options left to check:
1) If you're using a pro controller, un-pair it. Pair it again without touching the sticks.
2) Do a cold shut down on the console.
3) Start a new save file.
Really, only option 1 should be the problem. There's two points at which you can do sword training. Either voluntarily when you first come across Orca, or when you're progression-forced to before you can enter the forest. What part are you at? The training was a pain for a few moments because I kept moving the stick by habit, but it shouldn't be a week-long issue.

Might sound a bit daft, but have you tried using a differnt controller? There may be a calibration issue, or in the worst case scenario, one of the potentiometers have gone on the anlogue sticks casuing incorrect or imprecise commands resulting in failing the said training. I seem to remember having an issue with misunderstanding in the training and I think it was down to targeting / parrying at the wrong time which resulted in me having to retry again. Hope you can get sorted!
Thank you both, I'm at that same thought... That it HAS to be something with the controller. I'm in the middle of something else right now and won't get any play time until later, but I'll certainly try above suggestions. Yes, I'm using a pro controller, and yeah I tried a different controller, as well as multiple restarts under mine and newly made accounts.
Thanks everyone for all your suggestions, as I'm about to throw this game out the window, haha!
@MemeMarie Glad you figured it out. I was going to suggest that I seem to remember that in the original you could train prior to being able to get the sword and he would refuse to let you keep it. Just in case you had not progressed far enough in the story.
I had the same problem - Orca would not let me progress with a mistake free run. I think there is a glitch in the software. I started another save file - collected the pigs and rupees..then the green tunic...then the telescope from the tower..Then spoke to the old man upstairs...read through all the wall posters and went downstairs to run through the swordplay again.. Orca gave me the sword despite hitting me down to the ground. Its frustrating but its quite near the start of the game. Windwaker is a game that needs alot patience - its a requirement for playing Zelda generally!
