@Ralizah Wile I never beat the game, I got up to the ice world, and my goodness is this all true, it’s a good game, but it has so, so many flaws in its design, the game could have just made it a clean layout so you know where to go, but nooooo, wander aimlessly for 20 minutes only to figure out there was a button on the water, or you needed to collect these boots, it gets frustrating, flying is a chore, honestly, a big thing that probably saved a lot of its issue was the characters and the world, other then that, my goodness.

It’s no wonder yooka didn’t do as well as it did, it had a lot of the same issues, not the hub world from me memory but just level design, idk I found kinda boring, but I’m open for a sequel.

Mario 64 an "obtuse nightmare"? That's simply ridiculous.

Absolutely agree. I shook my head sooo hard when I read that, that my head nearly flew off. Yet such a....."unique" take like that is expected in the unpopular opinions thread.

Before any Karen's get their knickers in a knot, I'm not claiming SM64 is a timeless masterpiece, far from it. I played it again for the first time in 24 years 13 months ago, 100% in around 15hrs, and my experience was nowhere near what others would claim. As a matter of fact, I've played modern games that have made me want to take a bath with a toaster.

@Ralizah I do feel like the nostalgia bias argument comes up a lot for games like mario 64, banjo, Zelda: ocarina of time, Paper mario (kind of). Most of the games people hold up as still being these masterpieces just aren't all that anymore compared to games that have been released since, but it'll still be regarded within that same reverence. I guess it's because I don't have that nostalgia for those titles but I just don't get it, haha. Super mario 64 is fine but definitely not anywhere near the top anymore nowadays, I'd choose a hat in time or super mario odyssey any time over that.

Ocarina of time I just couldn't bring myself to finish because it was so generic at this point. Decent game but again, masterpiece? Best zelda game ever? Ehhhh...

I keep buying fighting games for some reason, even though I barely got anyone to play against.

@Snatcher Yooka-Laylee is interesting. It rightfully got pushback for its flawed design traits... that it pulled directly from Banjo-Kazooie. I've argued before that people don't like Y-L because it too accurately recreates the design traits of those older collectathons. What people actually want is a game that makes them feel the way they remember those games.

@EaglyTheKawaiiShika Right. Although plenty of people will argue that Mario Odyssey is some awful game because it doesn't boot you out of a world every time you collect a moon, lol.

@Takoda I think you really needed to play these games when they were fresh to have the sort of blind nostalgic love for them that so many older Nintendo fans do. It's just not the same if they're not paired with warm, fuzzy memories of better times.

I was a Playstation kid. Only owned an N64 for Pokemon games.

@Ralizah Yeah I feel that way to, I kinda felt like that.

@EaglyTheKawaiiShika A hat in time is my favorite 3D platformer of all time, I know that’s kinda obvious, but need to say it, I love, love, love that game.

As someone who grew up on the NES and my most of my favorite games are older, I'm not going to say that nostalgia has nothing to do with it, but I don't think it's as much as people want to argue. The original Legend of Zelda is my favorite game of all time, and I can give dozens of reasons as to why it truly is a masterpiece to this day that modern gamers simply won't listen to, but Skyward Sword is my second favorite Zelda ever so I'm not just looking through rose-tinted old glasses. And I also think Mario 64 is a masterpiece that holds up today, but I can't decide between it and Galaxy 2 for which is my favorite Mario. I think there are two issues. First, if you didn't grow up pre-3D games, there is no way to describe what it was like playing Mario 64 for the first time. I think I played for 30-60 minutes before I ever entered Peach's castle. It was beautiful and amazing just running around, and even playing today it just feels perfectly fluid. Maybe it's nostalgic feels more than nostalgic thought, if that's a thing. Second, having been gaming for 30+ years, I feel like I've seen it all and it takes a lot to impress me. I've played many games that are practically universally considered great if not masterpieces (off the top of my head I'm thinking of any of the Bioshocks, Hollow Knight, the Ori games, Xenoblade, any of the Elder Scrolls, the Steamworld games, and many others) that I thought were just fine at best. The only two games I can think of in the past 5 years or so that I came away blown away and have become all-time favorites were Celeste and Owlboy. Maybe you might call it nostalgia, but I think it's more that modern gamers are just used to certain things that older games don't give them.

@Snatcher Glad to see some hat in time love, that game’s an absolute gem and I don’t hear anyone bring it up that often despite the outstanding quality.

@Takoda I know, I don’t hear anyone talk about, but it’s such a fun platformer, with fully voice acted characters, fun levels and amazing hats! I love it, my whole profile theme came from said game, I really love it.

@EaglyTheKawaiiShika Oh definitely get through your list, whenever you do, I hope you have fun!

@Anti-Matter It’s just transformers Xcom, legit I wish they would have put more effort into it, if they had it could have actually been fun, and utilize the transforming mechanic more.

Ironically, I have finished Transformers Battlegrounds PS4 but still never finished Mario + Rabbids despite having same genre gameplay.
I quite enjoy the gameplay of Transformers Battlegrounds but I also wish more transformation abilities and bigger numbers of HP and damage.

Sentimentality aside, may as well herald it's return with one of my most controversial takes: these two are some of the best Pokemon designs of all time.
