For all of you who missed it, or didn't have the time or appetite to watch the entire Treehouse broadcast yesterday, here's the part in which they showed us more from Daemon X Machina:

'The console wars are like boobs: Sony and Microsoft fight over which ones look the nicest and Nintendo's are the most fun to play with.'

I hoped we would see 1 or 2 nice 3DS-games after the Direct (like a new Zelda or a new Warioland), but even that is of the map. This Nintendo E3 presentation is one of the worst I have ever seen (I watch it a couple of years now). Now If super smash was a totally new one they would redeem themselves a bit. But guess what, its Smash 4 Deluxe! FAILURE!!!

It's not Smash 4 tho. It's built from the scratch up, features updates to existing fighters as well as new fighters in it.

Smash Ultimate isn't a port, it's more like a collection game (e.g. WarioWare Gold, Rhythm Heaven Megamix).

@Octane Bloody autocorrect.

Well, Ricco Harbour was never spelt that way here so technically yes and no?

@Tsurii I get the sense that it's three hours overall. They're not going to let us get 24 hours out of their 50/60 hour game in a free demo.

You should be able to get around this by playing three hours with different accounts, of course, but only one of them will be transferable to the full game.

I'm mainly curious to see what QOL changes were made since the initial demo.

@Grumblevolcano Isn't a "collection" game kind of a form of port though? It's not an all new ground up game. Arguably a fighting game almost never is (and when it is it's hated), but that's why a fighting game as a centerpiece is kind of an odd choice.

NEStalgia

Ralizah

@NEStalgia No. It's a game designed from the ground up with redesigned characters, stages, etc. from previous games. That doesn't imply that it's using the same code or even the same assets (except in the sense that it's referring back to character models and whatnot from previous games when designing it). Thus, it is not, in any sense, a port.

@NEStalgia @Ralizah Well, to be fair, I think they just ported over the Wii U game, and updated it. Loads of tweaks and additions. Similar to Splatoon 2. If they remade all those 3D models, stages and animations from scratch they've wasted their time!

The E3 eShop sale is live. It's... actually pretty decent for Nintendo. Splatoon 2 for $40, Mario + Rabbids Gold for $43, Zelda BotW and FE Warriors for $45, DB Xenoverse 2 for $25, Puyo Puyo Tetris for $24, etc.

Might double-dip on BotW finally. Had it on Wii U, but perhaps I can start a new file on the Switch.

I run a YouTube/Twitch channel for fun. Check me out if you want to!

@Ralizah It's dishonest to say ANY iteration of a fighting game is "redesigned from the ground up." SFII to SFIV was a redesign. 2D sprites to 3D models. After that it's all the same thing. Of course core fighter fans will argue that to the death, "oh no the frames to a ko from an AABXAAYRLDown are 2 fewer and an extra .8% damage, this changes everything!" but for anyone else if you rebuild the same level with the same characters in 10 different engines and fine tune the timings and balances, it's still another copy of the same game. To make Smash new it has to actually be new. Re-use the characters, but new maps with new gameplay concepts as core. Interactions with the maps in all new ways. Something to make it something other than the same game with different adjustments to parameters.

We joke that CoD is always the same, but the maps are always all new. they don't just move a bunker 20ft left ,and change the trees from spruce to white pines. It's new ground up stages. Fighting games get away with murder, but they're usually niche so it's not too much a bother.

This seems to be a collection of tons of old maps and characters from other games. With ONE new character (we know of.) rendered prettier and rebalanced/tuned. That's not really a new game. It's just what the title says it is: SSB: Ultimate [edition]. A great version to get if you haven't played before. An ultimate version for the hardcore. But nothing terribly new for most. Of course most didn't have a WiiU to play 4....so it will sell like DKCTF, Bayonetta, Kart, etc. As a way to play the missed WiiU game and/or play it portably.

Don't get me wrong it looks like a great version of Smash....but lets not pretend it's not, ultimately, an enhanced WiiU game. There's less new here than there was in 4. And the titling of the game as "Smash ultimate" seems, actually, surprisingly honest of them. Maybe it will have an amazing single player mode? They haven't showed that yet. If that's radically new that may make it feel more sequely. If it's one of the prior modes.....then not so much. If it's just like Melee, it's actually a feature reduction.

IceClimbers

@NEStalgia Errr, we know of two new characters, Inkling and Ridley. That's only what's been revealed.

Also, going by your logic, what exactly did Smash 4 introduce that was truly new besides playing with 8 players?

Is it not an enhanced, HD Brawl?

@NEStalgia in terms of new characters theres more than one at least with Inklings and Ridley and in terms of new to Smash 4 there's the returning fighters of Ice Climbers and co. By your definition of new/not a port it would be impossible to make a new Smash without it being a complete overhaul and actually down plays who much work actually goes into making it.

@IceClimbers Oh that's right, I forgot inkling was new as well. I swore there was something Splatoon related in the last Smash, but then I played smash for like 3 hours and moved on.

@jump Again though that's why any fighting game makes for a weird centerpiece for a showcase. Like I said, I recognize that's how fighters tend to work, but even Capcom doesn't make their fighters the whole centerpiece of their presence. Smash gets more mileage as a "party brawler" more than "strict fighter" but fighters are generally a niche for a reason. They're very samey, repetitive games where 30 years of versions will generally seem like the same game unless you're "into the meta" so they don't make for very good showpieces to anyone but the faithful.

I enjoy playing it, mostly the single player, but to me, Melee, Brawl, SSB U, and this Ultimate are just all the same game with different graphics. A few different characters here and there, a few different maps here and there....but the same maps I played on Wii are still here...and to me, not in the meta, they'll play the same. To me it's just an HD port of that game. I know everyone into it will tell me the million ways it's different, and I understand Sakurai's attention to detail, and the nature of the fighting genre itself. But for me, as a non-enthusiast, it's always the same. (Same for Street Fighter.) I like playing with the pretty new graphics, and I hope that there's a better single player game than that horrid board game WiiU got (3DS did so much better!)...that'll keep me engaged more than 3 hours. But yeah, if you're a fan of Smash or fighters in general, you're not going to be able to see fighters the way everyone else does in terms of seeing it the same, iteration after iteration. MK to MK8D, Pokken to Pokken DX, Smash U to Smash Ultimate....same cycle to me, and I'm sure many others.
