That's probably why I remember winning that battle lol
I don't know how I ever got Porygon before. 9999 coins is a lot. It's 200k if you bought all the coins out right. I don't think I want to play the slot machine that much anymore now that I can play the real world ones...
Yep, with moves like Wrap and Sleep in gen 1, you're basically at the mercy of when the CPU finally misses.
In Gen 2 CPU does obey PP limits. My favorite moment when I played Gold was beating Silver because I didn't know he was going to show up, using Houndoor to simply stall out his Alakazam's Recover PP because for some reason Silver didn't want to use Future Sight on me, ever. That's 20 turns of Recover, however many Disables and Psybeams but not one Future Sight that would destroy my 20-levels-under dog.
If I recall in Gen 1 Game Corner, Porygon is the only exclusive prize. The rest are catchable SOMEWHERE.
@KingMike: Yep, everyone is catchable elsewhere except Porygon. Who actually isn't that useful or strong usually. But has those exclusive moves, Sharpen & Conversion that do a weird things visually I think? It stinks because Porygon is one of my favs. Even if it sends people to the ER.
Eewww... the sprite for it looks so much better in Green & Yellow than it does for Red & Blue.
Is it just me or does the most common girl trainer sprite sorta look like she's wearing a turban when she's front facing? I've always thought this
I'm seriously considering Yellow, but I'm not really sure about it yet. I already have the venerated remakes of Red/Blue (or really Green): FireRed and LeafGreen on GBA (and even an old copy of Red I probably haven't touched in over a decade).
Yet there is some appeal in having the original Kanto quest on my current 3DS ready to play at all times, even if it isn't the flashiest way to experience particular chapter in Pokémon history. Right now I need to dust of my old DS Lite or GBA for my Generation 1/Kanto story fix, which isn't always ideal. Plus I never played Yellow back in the day. Unlike HeartGold and SoulSilver, which are essentially also remakes of Crystal instead of just Gold and Silver, FireRed and LeafGreen didn't really include any of the new stuff exclusive to Yellow but instead had new additions of their own.
The Rocket Admins Jesse and James did not appear in the GBA versions, for example. This concept pioneered in the Yellow Version and continues to exist in subsequent versions with the evil team's leader always having these lieutenants. Also, the concept of Pikachu following you around (which was later expanded to include all Pokémon in HeartGold and SoulSilver) was unique to Yellow. Elements of the later Happines stat (introduced in the original Gold and Silver) and X and Y's Pokémon-Amie can already be found in this ancient 90s Pokémon game. I also like how you can get both Squirtle, Charmander and Bulbasaur in one copy, something that understandably never made it into the GBA remasters. Then there's new rosters for some of the bosses and trainers and an alternative version of Cerulean Cave from what I read. I've always gotten plenty of enjoyment out of these little tweaks and alterations that the various remakes, sequels and third versions made to familiar areas, making me happily play an essentially familiar quest again. Unevolvable Pikachu is kind of a bummer, though.
But there is one big draw that trumps all the others that spikes my interest: Pokémon Bank compatibility. The fact you can later use these old sprite-based Game Boy Pokémon in Sun and Moon is unexpected and it's rather cool they would go these lengths to get the maximum out of such an old game. Most VC titles are, admittedly, very lazy ports. While I'm not surprised at them including wireless trading (I mean come on, Pokémon is all about connectivity), the Pokémon Bank compatibility really surprised me. I mean it's not even that necessary. Many of the Pokémon in Red/Blue/Yellow are already in X and Y or Omega/Alpha. Even rare ones like Mewtwo will be available through a simple transfer from the Sixth Generation into the Seventh. The fact that they would go the extra mile to allow for an extra venue to get these Pokémon into Sun and Moon later on is the kind of dedictation to your fans that I greatly respect in game developers. I couldn't even fault them for not doing it, which makes all that much cooler that they did.
I just wonder if there will be some benefit to doing this. I know some Pokémon can't learn certain moves they could learn in Red/Blue/Yellow, like Snorlax with HM03 Surf or Machamp learning Fissure (how hilariously OP will that be when coupled with the ability No Guard in Sun and Moon?). It's just such an awesome way of saying 'thank you' to your fans who stuck with your games for two decades. I hope there will be something else to reward players for going back all the way to generation 1, but the fact that you can go from one end of 20 years of a franchise to the other is awesome in and of itself.
So, yeah. Maybe there is purpose to tryinf Yellow, also because Game Freak gives new purpose to it.
Was it gen 2 that gave different Pokemon trainer types different "sighted" music?
No wonder the security guard theme sounded so familiar, it was the original "male trainer encounter" music.
I fought the rival on S.S. Anne, and I realized rival fights didn't have unique music, just the standard trainer battle music. Except of course the final battle
Is it just me or does the most common girl trainer sprite sorta look like she's wearing a turban when she's front facing? I've always thought this
As a child I always thought it was a helm. To this day, even when I know that's her hair, I keep seeing it as the girl with the helm.
Omg I see it. But I also can't really unsee the turban. Then from the side it's a Female Lego toy, with the basic girl ponytail hair. Everyone who's played too much with Legos as a kid knows that hair.
Yeah none of them look right from the front to the side when you're walking. It's like they don't match up. I remember as a kid getting confused a couple times. The dark hair male sprite (like the one where there's 3 of them walking in Cerulean City)
THAT'S THE GUY! That one use to confuse me soooo much
Lol the English guard I always thought was a guy with a tall afro.
Half the gym leaders aren't even special either. Brock, Misty, and Erica at least are meh. Erica I wish had her sprite used all over instead of just once, but for Erica it's kind of blah. Giovanni looks like an slightly smaller edit of another sprite.
srry if the image is too long x_x
At least 2 different male trainers have the same side sprite, they're already similar looking as it is.
This image is just kind of interesting to me as well, all (or most) of the attack designs;
I remember another wierd sprite. The side of the fat bald guy (like the one who explains the effect of every badge) looks like an eyeless dog... The hair is its ear and the eye looks like its nose.
I think Lt Surge is exactly like another sprite, specifically one that stands in the Pkmn Center in Fuchsia City next to the square you stand on to talk to Nurse Joy.
Also the Safari Zone employees are the same sprite as the player's sprite, only with a white pallet and the eyes are smaller.
If you do hacks, does the Voltorb in the Safari Zone zoo do an item thing if you can get around the fence and press A on it? I tried to find it online but I'm not sure what to search to find out. I thought people had done it and it just disappears if you touch it but I want to reconfirm lol
The Pokemon you send from these games to the new ones will most likely become completely normal modern Pokemon. Chances are they'll keep their moves too, so don't worry about that.
PSA: Remember to save often. I just accidentally made Pikachu forget Thundershock for Double Team in Yellow and I haven't faced Misty yet. Last time I saved was before Brock. Bulbasaur is too underleveled for the fight.
