If I wanted some characters in, I'd choose um.. Kirby... lol Kirby just fits the whole "Mario Universe" theme, and Mario fits Kirby's universe. He could have a Warpstar Kart, and a Dragoon Kart.
I wish but its MARIO kart so he cant be that stinks

Yeah we need more characters from the RPG games though. Doubt from Super Mario RPG, unless Square randomly decides to let Nintendo use one of them from that game.

The day I see an RPG character in a mainstream Mario game or Mario Kart will be an unusual day indeed. Nintendo has hardly ever referenced the RPG games in their major games, with the only exception being Bowser's floating castle from Paper Mario appearing in Mario Kart: Super Circuit's rainbow road. I certainly wouldn't mind if a character did turn up, but the odds are mighty slim.
Even though its unlikely it is possible as the seven star spirits were in Mario party 5.

Mario Kart is not highly character-based. Characters have different stats in some games. That's all. There's no reason to pull in characters from all sorts of other franchises just for another set of stats. Smash profits from its huge wealth of potential cast members because they bring with them wildly different abilities.
I would be interested to see a MK where characters are more unique than they are now: i.e. a special item that only that character can get, a unique ability that can be activated once a lap/race, or just different odds of getting different items to widen the item pool without bloating it. But then again, that could end up with balancing issues.
And really, they should just make an Air Ride sequel anyway. The game didn't feel even half finished, and yet it was still a blast.
I hope there aren't any SNES of GameBoy Advance retro stages. While those tracks were great in the original games, those flat stages just don't look good on the DS and Wii games. N64, Gamecube, DS and Wii tracks would fit into the different cups.

Main reason I loved Double Dash, even though every character had its "double" (Mario and Luigi...Donkey and Diddy...King Boo and Petey. wtf? lol). Maybe that could be the "7" item in this game?....Doubt it. xD And yeah, wish Air Ride got a sequel, I enjoyed it.

Double Dash was indeed the peak (Off-topic: sort of like the first Galaxy for the platforming franchise). Not only did the characters have completely different special items which made a huge difference in gameplay, but you also had so many strategic combinations available due to the 2 slots. You could pair items together that might be handy in different situations, and of course the cart weight was also a factor to consider when building your team. Learning to play with different combinations felt very different, just like a fighting game, and unlike the other Kart entries.
I miss picking Waluigi and having all those wonderful bombs to play with, maybe putting him with a turtle to switch out for some spinning shells when I need defense instead (although let's be honest: dropping a bomb behind you in a narrow passage is the best defense of all). You could also hold an item in your secondary, imagine that! Such a varied and strategic game compared to the Wii entry, as much fun as that one may have been in other areas.
