Japanese company Hamster has been doing sterling work of late bringing classic arcade titles to the Switch via its Arcade Archives line, and it's lining up a release for one of Irem's most loved shooters.
In The Hunt – known in Japan as Kaitei Daisensō – was originally released in 1993 and was developed by the same core team that would later part company with Irem and form Nazca – the studio which created SNK's Metal Slug series.
While the gameplay is obviously different from that seminal run-and-gun blaster – this is an underwater, side-scrolling shooter – the similarity in the visual style is clear to see. In The Hunt features some incredible 2D sprite work and gorgeous level design. It was ported to the PlayStation, Saturn and Windows PC back in the day.
The title will hit the Japanese eShop on November 21st, with a price of ¥838.

They announced this one a while back, and I've been waiting.
Not even remotely patiently.
Pretty entertaining game, and well worth the purchase if you like this type of game.
Fantastic game. Hopefully Hamster will see fit to release more (relatively) recent games such as this one in the future.
Yes please! How about Undercover Cops in the near future?
I can sorta see a similarity, but the same could also be said of Undercover Cops.
Looks nifty. Very Neo-Geo.
Been waiting 84 years for In The Hunt. Just one more week...
Great game. This is a great little addition by hamster.
Isn't GunForce a closer forerunner to Metal Slug?
I suppose the original arcade version of GunForce was a pretty decent game. It looks like it was just the SNES port that was rushed/given to a bad dev.
Though GunForce 2 looked like a better game, maybe closer to Metal Slug, but it seems the only home release was a cheap licensed PC collection which clearly was MAME-based (including obvious emulation problems). That and a couple other games in that set like Undercover Cops and R-Type Leo deserve better re-releases.
Can't believe SNK Metal Slug series not only copy a lot from this but is exactly this and people were okay with it back then but nowadays we had games like Enchanted Portals which is like Cuphead and people were mad.
@retro_player_22 I think a lot of the same team worked on In the Hunt and Metal Slug. It's a brilliant shoot 'em up.
@shock_trooper UC is an underrated beatemup. One of the best on SFC too
Looks awesome.
Yes have this beauty on Arcade cab and Sega Saturn. Brilliant game gorgeous art work so much detail:) nice to see coming to Switch.
The time is now folks, another good Arcade Archives is finally happening
I never picked it up on Saturn for some reason back in the day.
Time to make things right.
Woah... how is it that I've never heard of this game??? I just might pick up the Switch version, but dang, I think it needs to get added to my Saturn collection.
