It's not as good as Hit & Run (the Wii version, anyway). I'd say it's worth a rent if you're a big Simpsons fan, as it does make good use of the license, but the gameplay is rather bland, not particularly bad, just unremarkable. I wouldn't recommend buying it for more than $15 or $20.
I played through the 360 version. If you're a Simpsons fan it's a lot of fun, but it does get dull and the gameplay isn't all that. I enjoyed Hit and Run more, even though you had more freedom to explore Springfield in The Simpsons Game. I agree that if it's in the $20 or under range, and you're big Simpsons fan, you should get it.
It's by no means better than Hit and Run, which was probably as good of a Simpsons game as we'll ever get.
The Simpsons Game for the Wii (can't vouch for the other versions) was probably one of the buggiest retail releases I've ever played. We're talking Action 52 quality bugginess in certain areas, which is embarrassing.
The dialogue was great. The cutscenes were excellent. The voice acting was top notch.
I wanted to buy The Simpsons Game, but ended up grabbing Hit & Run instead after reading reviews. Although I still haven't tried The Simpsons Game, I don't regret the decision.
I played it on 360, finishing the Achievements 100% (back when I cared about those). It's a pretty good game...like people have said, the gameplay isn't the BEST...in some instances, it's because they're making fun of gaming standards instead of trying to fix them. For example: You can't swim in the game...instant death. In one level, it's one of the unlockable "clichés" that the Comic Book Guy pops up to complain about. Amusing and frustrating at the same time.
The best part for any real gamer is, of course, the level that takes place inside a video game factory. It pokes fun at tons of games. I'd say it's worth playing for the humor. Without it, it'd probably be one to skip. So it's up to you if you're like me and will play a "pretty good" game to get the great humor.
My Backloggery Updated sporadically. Got my important online ID's on there, anyway. :P
In short, no it's by no stretch as good as Hit & Run was. The Simpsons Game is more of a traditional platformer in the sense that every level is isolated, and each has a beginning and an end. There aren't any characters that you can interact with, nor is there the free roam gameplay that Hit & Run was praised for (though you can explore parts of Springfield in the 360/PS3 versions). The game is almost completely linear bar a hub towards the end of the game that allows you to choose one of four maps.
The DS version is byfar the best version of the game. While it's short, and it doesn't offer quite as meaty an experience as its bigger console brothers, the game is virtually bug free, and is a pleasure to play through at least once. All versions follow the same storyline, however some levels and cutscenes (such as the GTA and Metal of Honor spoofing levels) were omitted from the DS version, possibly due to scheduling or memory constraints, but they're no big loss as you can watch these levels/cutscenes play out on YouTube without the frustration of actually playing through the levels in the console versions.
The Wii version is an absolute disaster and I honestly couldn't wait for it to end, but I persisted anyway, being a lifelong Simpsons fan and all. Levels that have a par time of only 10 minutes may take in excess of 1 to 2 hours to complete thanks to the broken controls and the relentlessly intrusive camera which disrupts whatever little fun that there is to be had with the game. It's certainly playable (if you're really patient), however, I would strongly advise you to approach with caution, or better yet, stick to a platformer that's worth your time.
Within seconds of the first level, I'd fallen into the chocolate lake at least a dozen times before making it across successfully (and that was just the first hurdle). Having played games practically my whole life, I don't fancy myself a pushover, and I can persist with even the most difficult of games, however, the controls will undoubtably make you feel cheated as you almost never land where you intend to as the playable character and camera are controlled by the nunchuck and remote respectively, but this control mechanism is rendered futile when even the most meticulously planned leap doesn't end the way that you'd like it to.
There's replay value to be had in the form of collectibles and whathave you, but really, I'm not going to bother. As a new Simpsons experience, it borders on mediocrity, but as a game, it's completely broken and I'd suggest that you priortise the DS version if you really want to play The Simpsons Game in any form. The 360/PS3 versions trump the Wii version in terms of their slightly more polished controls/camera and sharper visuals, so if you have the option, and you're desperate for your Simpsons console fix, try one of the HD console versions instead.
no. The game is not good, especially because of the camera. It's excruciating but make sure you play in co-op - it's the only fun to have there. If you do get it, get the Wii version, since it will probably be cheaper and it's the same game... but more fun to play with nunchuks.
So ends a saga older than time itself. The World's oldest and fiercest army has been led to victory, and a lost generation is delivered from its fear of extinction. As the sun sets over the field of conflict the dinosaurs disperse, hoping never to set foot in this place a...
I've been wondering about this too. I have Hit and Run and think it's a terrible game - this does look a lot better. I'm basically curious if you can just explore Springfield though - like on Virtual Springfield on the PC. That's all I want it for really - if you can just walk around the town I'll get it - if not then I don't really care.

Then you really don't care. Exploration is limited to the Simpson home, and whatever small areas the levels throw you into. Hit and Run had the most exploration in a Simpsons game yet. (Well, maybe...Virtual Springfield...but that was on rails so...eh.)

You're joking, right? If you didn't like Hit & Run, then you'll definitely want to stay far, far away from The Simpsons Game. The Simpsons Game is an unpolished platformer/beat-em-up without the free roaming gameplay featured in its predecessor. The 360/PS3 versions allow you to explore Springfield to a degree, though not quite as much as Hit & Run (in the Wii version, you're restricted to exploring the house, and even that wasn't implemented very well).
The Wii version should be your last resort if you wish to experience the game.
Porygon did nothing wrong.

I say just pick it up, since you are a big fan and its pretty cheap. I beat the game with a friend, and we had a decent time playing co-op. The game was very average, but it was still enjoyable, since the cut-scenes and humor are fantastic.
