That and the controller is just the worst thing ever conceived. 5 dollar bargain-basement usb controllers are 100x as capable... Mortified by that thing
Okay, so I'm not the only one taken aback by how terrible the controllers seem.
Just got a message from my local retro game store that they are receiving shipments now.
I'm not sure if I should wait though, reviews are mixed and they all seem to point to the same issues about the carts not actually being played as carts.
E3 is around the corner, and the teaser for N64 support is what I'll be waiting for in the meantime.
The Retron 5 is out!... Uh, sorta. You still need to be lucky enough to have pre-ordered the grey unit from specific shops, or to have a mom and pop shop with one in stock. My Amazon pre-order (For a black unit) still hasn't updated at all.
The video and audio quality looks pretty good, but the death grip seems very worrying. The Famicom death grip is really really bad, and the Genesis one seems way too tight as well. I've already heard of at least one broken FC port due to the death grip.
Pat will also be posting a review vid today or in the next couple days. Looking forward to his review; he mentioned on the CU podcast that there are both pros and cons, and he also mentioned the death-grip issue.
As much as I hate to say it, I don't think the system will be worth the 1 year+ wait. The concept is golden, but it looks like it has a bunch of problems. The death grip looks even worse then older clones, nobody seems to have anything good to say about the controller, tons of problems with saving, and it seems like it has a bunch of problems recognizing games. It doesn't look terrible, but for all of the delays and $140 price point, a lot of these things should have been ironed out.
Just received my retron5 today and......the Genesis slot doesn't work. The pain i feel is indescribable.
I feel for you, especially if you pre-ordered last year. Hope you can get that sorted out. It doesn't seem like Hyperkin's quality assurance has gotten any better since the R3.
So between all these issues, never mind the fact that my local (and as far as I know, sole supplier): funstock.co.uk has already sold out
I had a look on Amazon.com, just out of interest, and there's definitely some profiteering going on - third parties are now selling them from $200 up to $289, plus postage and packing.
I've been looking forward to this thing for ages - I've waited patiently for the ship date, but now I've really been soured on the idea of getting one. I've still got limited internet, so I haven't been able to watch any video reviews, but reading @8BitSamurai 's post on the video, I can't help but feel concerned.
But even before that, I've been undecided on whether I really want a glorified android emulator (and the convenience it would offer in playing all games in on unit), instead of a genuine console. Region free is still a sticking point, but I can get someone to run a modification on it. Another thing the retron would have over a retro console is it would run in HDMI.
I'm decided now - I'll pass on the Retron.
I plan to get a SNES first. While I have a some Mega Drive games (Soleil, European Club Soccer), I've got more SNES games - including a desperately sought International Superstar Soccer Deluxe. Furthermore, being a SNES kid, I'll mainly be looking for SNES games down the line. A Mega Drive will come next (with power base converter if any Master System games catch my eye), then finally a NES. I don't need GB or GBA because I have one of my own.
@edhe
Even in the US, Hyperkin is not making any attempt to even fulfill many pre-orders made last year. I doubt anybody will be able to easily pick one up at any point this year. I'll probably end up buying the Super Retro Trio eventually, since my money isn't good enough for a Retron 5, apparently.
@edhe - Hey, HEEEEY...
You have Soliel? How'd you even get your hands on that? I know the NA version is stupidly rare these days...
I bought it in a secondhand game shop. I guess I was lucky. Even more so when you factor in the strange European box art:
I could have so easily passed it by, but to be honest, it did stand out against the Micromachines and Desert Strikes that filled the shelves.
I can't really say I have an eye for bargains though. I bought a few other games from the same place, and I soon realised I didn't have to pay quite as much - for example, I paid around £7 for Super Soccer, when I could have got it from another shop, (a few hundred yards away, mind you) for just £2.
But I got something very interesting in the post today - something I hope to play on the SNES due to arrive in the next few days. Except it's a NTSC import, so I'll have to get my SNES modded first...
If you're a Canadian wanting to get a RetroN 5, then you'll be waiting until August comes in. A Canadian online store said I could possibly get as soon as early August. Hyperkin may keep postponing the release of RetroN 5 outside of USA, but then I'll be less likely getting a defect model than the earlier production runs.
I've had mine for about a week and a half (I'll prob put a review in my sig when I write mine), and I really cannot recommend it to anybody in the current state. Besides the controller being awful, the system being too hard to find and price gouged everywhere, software being problematic with emulation glitches very frequent, the hardware is just horrid. My Genesis slot's death grip is literally so bad I wouldn't dare use it again, considering two games I put in took me ten minutes of pulling to remove. The hardware is really badly built and the connectors are a joke.
I've been also hearing many reports on RetroN 5 not reading certain games even though the OS is supposed to be able doing so, which is why I bought a Super Retro Trio just in case my RetroN 5 system wouldn't work properly.
Have you updated your system software to v. 0.2.2 and its application to v. 1.5? It might resolves some of your emulation issues. Trouble finding the website? You should got to: http://retron5.in/

No, I'm gonna do that when I can get around to picking up another SD card.
On this firmware, most of the games play, but there's just a ton of glitches. In Crystalis the screen would shake violently every time I started to talk to someone. Top Gun had game breaking graphical glitches, Joust wouldn't work at all, and The Mafat Conspiracy would play, but the save states didn't work since it didn't recognize the cartridge.

@8BitSamurai; How about Urban Champion? Does it play in all its glory? That is the only game I care about.
To blessed to be stressed.
80's music makes me feel fabulous.
