I would go with VI, IX, or Tactics if you can. Though I have to agree heartily with the people that are saying just skip FF and jump into Dragon Quest, lol.
FFII and FFVI are just as good, if not better than most DQ games...

Even though those are the two worst FF games, that's still an understatement.

I haven't played those two (most say the opposite about VI but I know how you feel about that game from previous posts of yours) but you're probably right about Thedreaminghawk's comment being an understatement. I doubt that there's any FF game that isn't better than most DQ games.
@L4DYB4NSH33 After seeing you dis both FF and Tales of and talk about how much you like DQ I had a feeling that you just didn't like RPGs with serious storylines. I can understand your complaints with some games as I may not have played FFVII, VIII or X but those look like they might fit your complaints but rather than dismissing every RPG that's more serious than Dragon quest, you could try out some other RPGs.
I'll take light hearted stories over emo sulky over dramatic crap anyday.
That has more to do with your tastes in stories than the level of quality of the games. Gameplay-wise, DQ games are Grindfests with dinosauric gameplay elements. They're slow-paced to the point where it takes ages to feel like you're doing anything worthwhile - I've gotten 10 hours into 5 different Dragon Quest games and only in V did I actually feel like I was progression a plot. Seriously, how could anyone say Dragon Quest has a better story when most DQ games have barely any story to begin with?!
The only thing DQ has going for it is charm, and that's not something Final Fantasy lacks, either.

I can understand the hate for FFII (GBA port is bad, that's why I got the famicom one), why hate for VI? Looking it up on reviews some people think it is the best FF on the SNES that has a good translation (From what I hear IV has a bad translation, but I've never touched it)
And if you want to know what FFs to stay away from, stay away from FF X, XI, XII, and XIV. X-XII are decent, but XIV is a mess.

I'd start with FF V and work my way up. Of course, I'm biased, V is my favorite Final Fantasy. Great (sometimes silly and funny) story, interesting characters, a deep "Job" system that unlocks so many abilities, and incredible music (many of my favorite VG songs from it)! Can't forget Boko the Chocobo either.

I'll admit that the most recent FFs are about as emo as you can get. The earlier ones had more humor, however (something often lacking in recent entries). Aforementioned V was just plain goofy in spots. VII was deadly serious, but at least had a crossdressing Cloud. Ultra emo FF seemed to start with VIII, skipped IX (to a degree), and gone on full force from X on (though X/X-2 have Rikku for comic relief, <3 Tara Strong).
