I didn't like Skyrim at all, and generally don't like WRPG:s. However, World of Warcraft is a masterpiece (when played in RPG realm). The game has been in market for so long, that it 's starting to be nearly impossible to match the scope of it. The lore is also great, as is it's artistic direction and music.

In many ways I preferred Amalur, which took real creative risk.

Of course, Bethesda is still around and profitable, and 38 Games is dead. So much for creativity

Ugh, I couldn't disagree with you more with Amalur. It felt like it stole as much as possible from other, better games. Luckily, this also gives me a chance to randomly point out that Curt Schilling is a giant turd masquerading as a person.

On a more positive note, I agree that Dragon's Age was a great game. No so much with the sequel.

I've grown up playing WRPGs (since JRPGs were and still are rare on PC). Some of my favourites are:

Baldur's Gate
Baldur's Gate II: Shadows of Amn. (Seriously, if you're looking for a first WRPG to play, THIS is the one).
Knights of the Old Republic I and II
Dragon Age Origins
Dungeons of Dredmor (the newest on this list, and a fun intro to roguelikes)

Some others that are meant to be good include: (I own these but haven't played them much/at all):

Nox (an old, and I think mostly forgotten RPG from Westwood - the Command and Conquer guys)
Planescape Torment (widely considered to have basically perfected narrative in a computer game)
Arcanum: Of Steamworks and Magick Obscura (great premise, unfortunately a bit buggy but I think there are fan patches that fix a lot of it)
Fallout 1 and 2

Most of these are older games, which is mainly because I've been buying fewer games in recent years. On the upside, they should run on basically any PC bought in the last decade!

I used to have a blog link here. I'll put it back up when the blog has something to read.
