Topic: Mass Effect (PC) not starting up

Posts 1 to 12 of 12

I bought Mass Effect on steam during the sale a few days ago, and installed it. The first time I tried to play it said "preparing game for first time setup" or something, and then nothing happened. I restart the computer, but it didn't do anything. Every time I try to start the game, a box pops up that says "Preparing to Launch Mass Effect" and disappears, and then nothing happens. I don't know much of anything about computers' specs and jargon, but I do know that I bought this one less than a month ago and it's much better than my old one, which runs Portal without any problems. Anyone have any idea why this is happening?

Trust me, Mass Effect not starting is a blessing. I may be the only person on earth to think so, but I wish my copy hadn't started

Yes, you are the only person to think that.

What OS (operating system) are you using? If you're using Windows 7, you may have to set the game and launchers as administer programs. To do this, locate the .EXE files (they both should be in [Steam/steamapps/common/mass effect] and [Steam/steamapps/common/mass effect/Binaries]) and right click on one of them and click the "Properties" option. Now go to the "Compatibility" tab and check the "Run this program as an administer program" box. Do this for both launchers and the the main game (just [masseffect.EXE] and it should load a bit faster.

EDIT: fixed some confusing words.

Yeah, I had to set the exe compatability to XP. Give that a try.

Okay, I figured it out. Turns out Mass Effect doesn't allow user account control on Windows 7, so I had to turn it off in order to get it to start up.

I hope you didn't turn UAC completely off and just set it off for that specific program as outlined by V8.

I did, actually...why, is that supposed to be important or something? It's only ever caused me annoyances, and since I don't visit "questionable" sites, I don't anticipate it being a problem.

It's an unnecessary risk. It will prevent unintended control to programs (good or bad). It's good practice.
