I mainly used my Gamecube as part of that generation but I have fond memories of playing Final Fantasy XII and Rogue Galaxy the summer before I went to UIUC for a year. I also poured a lot of time into Persona 3 on weekend mornings, playing in bed, after I finished university and was living footloose and fancy-free.
Funny, I still play my PS2 from time to time, even as recently as a few days ago. It's a great system, especially the Slim, and it had a ton of great games. I just hope I can finish 'em all before the end times, you know?
It still sits at the center of the room, right beside my Wii U. One of the greatest gaming platforms ever released and there's still plenty of fun to be had 15 years later. I've bought PS2 games as recently as last month.

There are still 10 PS2 games I want, but most are really rare and expensive now.
EDIT: Actually, there are 15 I want, and 6 of them aren't too expensive! Yay!

I had a Gamecube first, and then we got a PS2 a few years later. I wanted to play the Dragon Ball Z games that came after Budokai 2. And I played some of the Naruto games and Shadow of the Colossus and Guitar Hero and Final Fantasy X and Tomb Raider.
I still play it from time to time. I was playing Tomb Raider Legend the other night. Sometimes I just get the urge to bring it out of storage and hook it up. The largest game library I own is my PS2 one. It's not my favourite console, but I can easily say that I sunk the most time into the PS2 than any other system I've owned.
I go back and forth between the SNES and the PS2 as my favorite system of all time. The only thing I didn't like about the PS2 was the inferior slim model.

Why inferior?
Because they are. I went through 3 of them. Two of them overheated and the weren't in any location where it should have overheated. The overheating problem also happened to two of my friends. The third one the lid wouldn't stay close.

The PS2 was my go to system during middle school & the first half of high school.
My Christmas vacations were spent playing that year's new DBZ game (which I always got for Christmas).
It also introduced me to some of my favorite game series, with Final Fantasy X (& XII), Ace Combat 4 (& 5), Soulcalibur III, & Kingdom Hearts (& II).
Also, me and my best friend would alternate each year who would buy the year's new WWE game, and we'd pretty much spend every weekend goofing around with the create feature, lol.
Currently Playing:
Switch - Blade Strangers
PS4 - Kingdom Hearts III, Tetris Effect (VR)

Just in case you aren't aware, the first Castle of Shikigami was released in the US as well, under the title Mobile Light Force 2.

I have that noted on my Wishlist, I just didn't bother organizing it when I wrote it down there. That was including games available on PSN, though obviously the only important one I haven't gotten there yet is Castle Shikigami 2.

I know you've said this repeatedly, but you're still the only people I've heard have problems with the Slim model. I know mine's second only to the N64 for taking the most punishment in this house, but it still works like a dream (unlike the N64, which freezes from time to time). I know a couple people who had the original model and it broke (one person's stopped working [probably overheated], two people had their disc drive and/or lens break). Granted, I live in a fairly cool and dry climate where most people I know would have a decent air conditioner in the summer (in fact, for a while my family was the only one on the block with a window unit until we got the fancy ducting 4 years ago).
...I'm sorry I thought this was the Ask a Stupid Question, Get a Stupid Answer thread. We're talking about the PS2 because it's the PS2's anniversery...month.
Already? Ah, I remember crashing my way through Burnout: Dominator, Shooting some droid scum in the Star Wars: Battlefront games, Hacking at some orcs in The Lord of the Rings: the Third Age, fighting my way through 4 Lego games, blasting through deathmatch battles in Tribes, and exploring the world of Ivalice in Final Fantasy XII.
