Topic: iPad vs dedicated gaming consoles.

So me and my brother were arguing about this last night. He was on the iPad side and I was sticking with the dedicated gaming consoles(Nintendo, PS, Xbox). He was saying that in 10 years, iPad would have already overtaken consoles and that consoles would be niche. While I agreed with him on that, I was arguing with him about what is happening right now, and that right now, consoles are way better than anything iPads can do in the gaming area.

He went on about how consoles have had 30 years to progress with controllers, processing, etc. but tablets are a "new technology" and have only had 2 years and their already better than the last generation(360, Wii, PS3). I kept on telling him that tablets are not a new technology, but a 5 year old computer put behind a technology that has been around since the 70s(touch screens) and that they have used what consoles have been working on for the past 30 years to base its games off of. I also kept on telling him that the controls are awful but he kept on saying that they've only been around for 2 years. And I said, "It's a screen! You can't change the fact that physical buttons are superior and far more responsive!" After another 20 mins of going back and forth, he had the last word cause I was tired: "Just give this(as he held his iPad mini up) another 30 years and we'll see where it's at."

So what side are you on? Do you want to see tablets take over consoles in the gaming area or see consoles remain the king of games? Also how long will you stick with consoles? Discuss your thoughts.

No contest here. Anyone who actually cares about playing games with depth and responsive controls, won't choose a tablet. We might be a dying breed, though and that's what I fear.

I added another question. How long will you stick with consoles? For me, as long as Nintendo keeps on making great games for their systems, I'll keep on buying their systems.

It weird, I had a argument with my brother about the same thing the other day. His view is everyone have a tablet now a days compared to having even one of the many video game consoles of today, so the market is much more. I told him that even though a lot of people have tablets, that doesn't mean a lot of people will pay for video games on it, especially if it's the price close to the console version.

Long story short, tablets are like computers. Even if everyone have it, doesn't mean everyone play games the same way console owners do. There's a small amount of people that will put the same time and money that a console owner probably would.

Yeah I'm not so much fan of Nintendo or Microsoft or Sony. I'm just a fan of good, fun games. And no one has provided me with those better than Nintendo!

Home consoles? There's no way that tablets can overcome home consoles. There's a massive audience when it comes to not only playing games with a controller, but also on a TV. Yeah, it looks like Apple is going to do that (which will be interesting, since none of it's mandatory, so I don't know if the major support will come with it), but if the release of GTA V being the most successful video game launch ever, I really doubt consoles don't have life in them in the near future.

The AAA video game industry is worth billions of dollars, and until that's not the case anymore, we will continue to see games on consoles. Which will likely be forever.

When it comes to dedicated gaming handhelds, well, until Nintendo puts their products on tablets, the likes of Mario and Pokémon are enough to keep their entire product lines afloat. With Japan being a very successful area for handhelds as well, even a disappearance of gaming handhelds seems unlikely as long as Nintendo is around.

People who buy tablets aren't looking to use them as a substitute for a gaming console, rather a multimedia device. I have an iPod Touch with some great games on it, but I hardly ever play them. I use it much more for music and video purposes. Part of that is the lack of physical buttons, but I also don't really view it as a dedicated gaming device.

Yes, home consoles. But what I mean is do you think that tablets, specifically iPads will take over as an alternative to home consoles?

I dont see why people feel the need to compare them. They're two entirely different gaming markets now. Many people who play tablet and phone games dont want to spend a lot of time actually playing games, and most PC/Console gamers arent about to stop playing on those systems for tablet games.

I honestly think tablets will end up replacing laptops, and giant tablets with more capable components will replace desktop PCs. Microsoft has the Surface, abd alot of desktop PCs are now giant tablets that you use a stand to hold up.

I would say other tablets have a better chance than iPad. Same thing with iPhone. The Galaxy S is alot more flexible because Android is just a more lenient OS.

I argue about this stuff with my cousin all the time. I tell her that if you have an iPhone 3GS(which came out years ago), you're still up to date with most of any software available across the iPhone platform. The iPad 4 still has tons of iPad 1 & 2 apps, too. There's no reason to buy a new device every single year if the software doesn't improve.

The iPhone or iPad doesn't even have an SD card slot. I honestly don't understand why Apple products are so popular when the software hardly ever improves.

That's mainly on topic. I completely agree that any other device besides a dedicated gaming machine doesn't hold up very well when it comes to gaming, ESPECIALLY Apple portables. You would factually be better off buying a Surface Windows 8 Pro vs. an iPad. You can still run PC software AND tablet apps, vs. just tablet apps which are basically nothing in comparison, yet the devices are pretty close in price.

I like buttons. I like not wasting battery in a device made for more than only games. I like complex games. hate pay-to-win and can't take most of the casual games. so I'll stick with dedicated gaming consoles!!! and I saty with mine until they break, like my GBC, I still play it and sometimes it ends being more fun than 3DS.

edit: sorry it was about home consoles and not handhelds....... well tablets won't take the place even of handhelds in my opinion. no way home consoles will lose to such a casual idea like a tablet.

Arguing about apples and bananas? Pfft...

Clearly someone doesn't realize limes have more citric acid. More power = Better consol- I mean fruit.

But yeah, tablets (without any peripherals) are a wholly different beast compared to a console, or even a handheld. I'd never want to play something that would require constant movement changes (like a platformer), or something that requires intense precision (like rhythm games), without buttons or better yet a keyboard.
