...Okay look, I'm fine when games are similar while they do their own thing. But this...is is just...well...yeah...
I don't even know what to say...
I'm fine when people follow a trend, like with Bendy and the Ink Machine and the 30's cartoon thing. But Bendy is actually completely different.
This basically has the same exact genre and controls, same visuals...same music style...Yeah, sure....bosses are all different, but...you're still fighting them in the same exact way you would in Cuphead. Hell, the dash move is ripped right out of Cuphead.
So Mortal Kombat is a rip-off of Street Fighter, Fortnite is a rip off of PUBG, and every platformer is a rip off of Super Mario Bros. Unfortunately game styles aren't owned by anyone so when a particular style is popular others are going to follow.
Just look at all the Battle Royale games that have come out in the past year.

Most of those games at least try to be unique in some fashion (MK prerendered actors and blood, Fortnite has a more stylistic art style and has goofier gameplay elements, etc.)
I'd describe this game closer to the Great Giana Sisters, if you want originality in gameplay or art style you're not going to find it here, but if you want something similar with new levels/bosses this game is for you.

I largely agree with this in theory. ...but all those examples have different aesthetics on some level. They aren't transparent clones of both the specific style of art and animation AND both general and large parts of the specifics of how a singular video game plays. You wouldn't confuse Fortnite with PUBG if you just look at both of them once.
This is a bizarre situation to me. It's not like...a lazy game at all. Like its not some mobile game that took a week to make, it takes effort and some level of talent to make this based on the footage. But its so specifically similar to one game that its kinda just awkward. And it probably entirely owes the attention it got to Cuphead's existence and popularity. But its not like...illegal.
I've often asked myself and others where the line between making a game of the same genre is and just making a rip off. Never gotten a satisfying answer.
But the games industry is utterly littered with clones and copies. It seems that, so long as you don't directly plagiarize someone else's code or story, you can really get away with almost anything. It's like that meme about copying my homework but changing it just enough so that it's sufficiently different.

@kkslider5552000 Well I think the accusations of “rip-off” come from several factors. Factor 1 is that Cuphead is a game that is only two years old. Factor 2 is that nobody from Studio MDHR is involved.
Imagine if a game like Yooka-Laylee and Bloodstained came out around the same time as Banjo Kazooie and Castlevania. They’d be called rip-offs as well, just as all the Doom clones in the early 90s were.
What prevented them from being seen in this light (since they have basically the same aesthetic/gameplay) was passage of time and some individuals being part of the development team which is being homaged.
I can agree that it was a poor choice for the game to have a trailer like this. If it has anything unique going on, it certainly isn’t evident.
Being inspired by another game isn't an issue, but this looks eerily similar to Cuphead; especially because it was kinda unique in its own way.
I can't help but feel that this was a move to garner more interest in their Kickstarter; even if it was unconscious. If I was starting out as a developer, I personally wouldn't copy a popular and unique looking game like Cuphead. It just doesn't look good.
It's similar to all the fan-made games online that get taken down in an instant. These people clearly know how to make a game (can't speak of the quality), so why not put all that effort into something more unique? This will forever be known as the "Cuphead clone".

Don't get me started on roguelikes, it's a whole genre dedicated to ripping off a single game. Even then Rogue was a rip off of Beneath Apple Manor.
I can consider the idea that before the Cuphead port was announced for the Switch, there was a clear demand for it, and the developers began production before it was announced. They were simply satisfying the demand but weren't quick enough on the draw.
But in watching a YouTube video that splices together footage of both games, while Enchanted Portals is well animated, it doesn't compare to Cuphead. I really 'ought to try it one of these days — its initial reveal on XBox caught my eye, but even when it released on steam, it passed me by.
It's clear they took a bit of inspiration from Cuphead in other ways, as well, copying set pieces, and swapping out the art for their own. I was really impressed with that robot cow bit, but they borrowed the idea from the superior original.
The last comparison is probably supposed to be a joke.
Yes, this game is a blatant "ripoff", but is that necessarily a bad thing? It looks and plays exactly like cuphead, but Freedom Planet looks and plays exactly like Sonic, and that game gets heaps of praise. Maybe we should judge the game by its quality, even if the design is unoriginal.
