Super Mario Galaxy is one of those games that doesn’t need a whole lot of work done to update it for modern platforms. It’s a sublime experience with timeless gameplay and visuals that still look magical to this very day. So booting it up on Switch or Switch 2, you might be hard-pressed to find anything ‘new’ here. Nevertheless, Nintendo has applied a few thoughtful updates, including improved resolution (up to 4K on Switch 2), revamped textures, an ‘easy mode’ of sorts, and a small addition to the narrative.

I have a weird history with Super Mario Galaxy. I've now played it to completion (not 100%) on both Wii and Nintendo Switch, and my feelings haven't changed much. I acknowledge it is an exceptionally-well-made game. It looks and sounds great. It has a decent story; probably the best in the series (though that isn't saying much).
I don't have enough space here to sufficiently critique the game, but I can say I dislike the controls, hate the semi-fixed camera, deeply dislike most of the course design (especially the "planetary gravity" areas), and utterly despise anything requiring gyro controls, such as balancing on a ball or riding the waves on a manta ray.
Also, the Spring Mushroom / Spring Mario is the WORST power-up in series history. I HATE IT.
It's weird to say the game is great and I hated most of it, but here we are.
