It’s nice to see another relatively uncommon Sega game getting the Sega Ages treatment, but while it’s still perfectly playable after more than three decades, the arcade version of Monster Land suffers from frustrating combat and a general lack of spark. Its importance in the evolution of the action platformer can’t be denied, but it’s not quite as addictive as other Sega Ages games, and while the emulation is as flawless as ever, the underwhelming extra modes mean there’s less incentive to keep coming back time and time again. Still, sometimes it's nice to play a game that has a bit of history behind it, and this is one such game; it may not be anywhere near as refined as Wonder Boy's more critically-acclaimed adventures, but it's still an entertaining way to spend an hour or two.

The Wonder Boy series is among the most confusing in gaming, in terms of its naming conventions. There are multiple games with very similar or identical titles that are completely different from one another, and others with totally disparate titles for variations of the same game.

That brings us to Wonder Boy: Monster Land, an arcade game which is also known as Wonder Boy in Monster Land on the SEGA Master System, and is not the same game as Wonder Boy in Monster World (1991), nor does it have much of any connection to its predecessor, Wonder Boy (1986) other than its name and main character.

Now that I've wasted 106 words setting us up, here is your very brief review: unlike the original Wonder Boy, this sequel is not a ratchet-scrolling action platformer. It is a platformer with RPG elements. I give original developer Westone credit for trying something so new and different in 1987, but the whole concept falls apart after a little while, as the game is extremely difficult and gets bogged down in its RPG mechanics. You'll want to run, jump, and fight enemies, but you'll spend too much time trying to figure out how and where to buy weapon and armor upgrades while battling a ridiculous time limit.

I didn't enjoy it very much, but that's more a knock on the original concept than M2 and SEGA's work bringing it to Nintendo Switch.
